If you're anything like us, you're probably wondering where the hell
Sling's SlingCatcher home media streamer is. Well, we put it out there and heard back from Sling: apparently that summer launch was a little "aggressive", and the release has been silently moved back to fall. Bummer, because we were really stoked to fool around with this sucker. Ah well, as long as Sling isn't too worried about the Apple TV eating the SlingCatcher's lunch, we'll sit quietly like well behaved gadget nerds.
[Thanks, Cole]

It won't take much to beat the Apple TV. The thing is a loser!

I agree. The Apple TV is so disappointing. Sling and Windows Media Center are way better than it.

at stock, yup you're right. but with all the mods, you basically get a pretty quiet thin PC. shouldn't be difficult to run linux on the thing. that should allow you to do a lot more then the sling can.

I you mod an Apple TV to be a PC running linux, you take away the whole low maintenance ease of use aspect. You might as well have just purchased a cheap used PC instead.

Holy crap! I sent in a request about the whereabouts of the Sling Catcher and they followed up. The system works!!!
Coincidentally I just came back from a run to my local Costco and Sams Club. BOTH said they returned their stock of AppleTV's and had no plans to order more. Weird.

Personally, for me, the Apple TV seems ahead of it's time. I encode everything I ever rent from Netflix and don't even watch it until further down the line and it all stays centrally located in iTunes. If there was direct rental from iTunes, it would KILL the competition
But to each his own.

The Sling Catcher has a ton of potential and it's at a reasonable price point. Sling does a pretty nice job with support also when it comes to their product development. It's a shame it's taking so long to get this product out the door, though it leaves me wondering why. Didn't they have a functioning demo almost a year ago?
