"Boy your kids are ugly" is something that no one wants to hear when looking at family photos, but if you decide to purchase the PhotoVu PV1965w 19-inch widescreen digital picture frame, you'd better brace yourself for that possibility, because this thing
is kind
of big. The WiFi enabled frame, which the company claims is the "first" of its kind (we assume they mean widescreen), features a 16:10, 1440 x 900 LCD screen, 802.11b, and USB connectivity (for adding flash or external hard drives). Sure, the $1,199 price tag is roughly seven-times the cost of a similarly sized cheapo LCD monitor, but can you really put a price on your memories? Yes, you can, and that price is $1,199.
Nice doggie.
Seriously, why can't someone take a $250 monitor, a $30 flash card, a $20 flash card reader, a $50 frame, and $30 wifi put it together and sell it less than a bajillion dollars. This thing shouldn't be more than $500 tops.
I agree, or you could get a $179 monitor plug it into a cheapo old PC, and get the same effect with way more cutomization. I suppose you could glue some molding around the edges for a picture frame effect as well.
In order to use this thing, all of your photos are going to have to be cropped to 16x10.
Mike, you forgot one kind of important part in your recipe. How do you get the pictures on to the screen? So add some more $$ for a computer-on-a-chip type of product.
Computer on a chip? There are a lot of printers under $100 that can read pictures from a memory card and display them on their LCD screen. It isn't exactly expensive technology... All of these digital picture frames cost twice as much as they should.
fully agree! i've done the same - bought a samsung 19 inch wide display with video-in, added a flash card reader with a remote control - and that's it!
Nice shooop.
Seems to me you could buy a laptop and glue it onto the back of a 19" LCD for a lot less than $1199...
or buy a tablet laptop. I found on with a card reader for £500 ($1000), ok its not high spec but it can play DOOM (which seems to be an important qualification on engadget), AND you could buy it blank (no OS or software) for £400 ($800), whack linux on, get some image editing (GIMP) a file display program (apple have released theirs for free on windows ($50 software required to make it work whith linux)) and your done a net saving of $349
Yeah I had thought of that too, but you're not going to find a tablet PC with a 19" LCD. I had also thought of a junk computer hooked up to a LCD, but you're not going to be able to mount that on the wall.
16:10 seems like a dumb aspect ratio for a picture frame when you consider that almost every digital camera in the world is either 3:4 (consumer digicams) or 2:3 (most DSLRs).
What is the point of this product? You can get a VERY nice TV or monitor with memory card slots for much less, I bet.
does anyone actually have a digital picture frame? looks pretty gimmicky to me.. could be handy if you are some sort of undercover spy who regularly needs to change their "back story".
In fact, lots of people are buying these things. It is estimated that 12 million dpfs will be sold in 2010.

I actually own one of these and it's great. Sure I could have pieced together the same functional thing for less but I bought it as a present for my wife and she loves it. It looks like artwork on our wall and she can see digial memories of our kids whenever she looks at the wall.
