Apple's MacBook Pro 85W MagSafe adapter shipping now
We know you've been sitting around all day, watching the door, hoping to see a UPS delivery person coming down the walkway with a new, small-ified MacBook Pro 85W MagSafe adapter. You probably thought it was going to take forever -- but your dreams just came true. According to one user who was kind enough to share with us, the units are shipping, though if you ordered a stock laptop recently you might not see it at all. Here's what they had to say; "The 85w compact adapter shipped with a recent Macbook Pro BTO configuration. I ordered two at the same time, one stock, one BTO, but the stock config didn't come with the compact adapter, whereas the BTO one did." So picky buyers, be prepared to make some angry calls to customer service.

Must be a slow news day
Sorry, my Apple Order Status still says shipping Aug 17. Some sort of trickle (charge????) down approah.
(and yes, a very slow news day).
yah, my macbook pro 17" will be very happy.
My deepfryer has a MagSafe AC cord, of course it's not named that. I don't have the faintest idea why though.
Yeah, why that company never pounded Apple for MagSafe, I don't know. They've had those types of plugs on electric cookware in Japan for as long as I can remember. I also remember as a kid (YEARS! ago) having a deepfryer in the house that had a magnetically attached plug...
The difference between the magsafe and all other magnetic power cords I've seen is that the MagSafe uses electricity to form the magnetic field, whereas the others seem to actually use real, permanent magnets. This also explains why the deep fryer/water boilers I've seen have a *significantly* weaker magnetic field than the magsafe adapter.
But will it still have the little doohickeys that fold out from the corners, around which you wrap the cord? Those things are dead convenient.
Me I'm just hoping that apple finally bought a clue and put enough stiffness into the the base of the DC cord that it won't kink like the old one and fray the cables. Every apple power brick I've ever owned has had that problem at one end of the cord or another. You'd think they'd learn eventually.
My current solutions for my 85w power supply is to take the springs from a couple ball point pens and wrap them around the base of the powersupply over the current inadequate cuffs to give it some strength. Seems to work ok, just make sure the ends can't poke through the casing.
My Macbook Pro 17 inch BTO still hasnt shiped yet (I ordered it a week ago) I assume this means I will be getting the new smaller Magsafe adapter. God I hope it ships soon.
My friend ordered a BTO MacBook Pro and received it 3 days ago with the new power adapter.
My 15" 2.4ghz MBP purchased at an Apple Store on Wednesday did not have the new adapter. Not that I expected it to...
I'm sitting next the guy who broke this story! NERD BOT! thank god I have him here to grease my technological wheel. I'd open the chocolate bar and throw out the golden ticket. Rock on Spar-lord!
Why is all the weight on the plug prongs? That causes the power supply to easily become unplugged if disturbed. ...And who designed that Apple mouse? Sometimes I like to rest the weight of my hand on the mouse for comfort (not an issue after 20 minutes, but becomes a problem after 8 hours). I like Apple, but I also like to connect my MS mouse to my Mac.
There, my two pieces of constructive criticism for the company who brought me the wonderful Mac Pro, Mac Book Pro, iPhone, iPod, and OS X.
Your deepfryer has a magsafe adapter so when you get shitfaced and decide to cook up a batch of fried cheese sticks, you don't trip over the cord and end up with hot oil all over yourself. Brilliant idea, actually.
Oh yah! I need to get drunk and cook more often! Maybe I'll learn why my oven has a power outlet next to the light switch.
I was thinking of it the other way, like if the deepfryer falls on you, cutting the power would do nothing. So was that personal experience?
And in other news McDonald's this week introduced a new smaller packaging for the Big Mac. Heralded as the most significant innovation in fast food packaging since the advent of the "Supersize" french fry container...
Sheesh. I love Apple products, I have many but I feel that right now if Steve Jobs put some of his waste product in a clear perspect box and called it the iPlop that you'd be all over it.
Can we have some perspective?
And here I am, freash off of ordering my new 45w AC adapter for my 500mhz iBook... Oh well.
I ordered a BTO 15" MBP on June 12/13 (It was late at night). It arrived this morning with the new shrunken brick. Since I ordered the computer well before the new adapter was announced, I expected the old one. Finding the new one was a pleasant surprise.
OK, I am an Apple fanboy. I own waaay to many Apple products, and upgrade far too often. But a slightly smaller AC adapter is news????????
it is for all of us who have a MBP with the HUGE power adapter. it's about friggin time, the power adapter kinda kills the size/weight advantage the MBP has over other 15" laptops.
well not really, but it's kinda weird to have this ultra-slick machine and then connect it to what looks like a Perestrojka-era power brick.
I'll get me one of these fer shure.
Got a BTO MBP 17" this morning with the smaller power adapter. I'm happy.
How can one tell they have the smaller one? What are it's dimensions? I have a client that got a 15.4" MBP just a couple of days ago, fresh off the delivery truck.
now maybe.. just maybe.. they can work on dropping the price on those charges down from the ridiculous 80 bucks
