SunRocket postpones service shutoff until August 5
Customers of failed VoIP provider SunRocket finally got some answers today after the service suddenly shut down ten days ago -- a message posted on the company's website officially broke the news that service is being discontinued and apologized to customers. SunRocket has brokered a deal to sell off some assets and keep things going until August 5th, and TeleBlend and 8x8 have apparently committed to providing former SunRocket customers with special rate plans. This pretty much kills those rumors that SunRocket had been acquired, so anyone feeling the burn had better port their numbers right quick -- after August 5th they'll just be a memory.[Via PC World]

...and that's that.

my service stopped working over a week ago

my service still works. I called Vonage tonight to switch. I didn't feel like messing with the smaller companies, especially the "TeleBlend" that SunRocket recommends in their email. Teleblend looks very shady, like it was made by a former SunRocket employee. The site was registered soon after SunRocket went under, and they seem to only accept SunRocket customers.

I switched to ViaTalk. They gave me 18 months for $199 and have the same rich feature set as SR. For just $30 they replaced the gizmo with a nice Linksys PAP2T that worked immediately when I connected it BEHIND my router. I would never go with Vonage. They don't offer Simulring. They cost a LOT more because they advertise so much and they're in legal trouble.

I looked into ViaTalk, and their unlimited plan is $10 more than Vonage. Sure they may have some more features, but I use my phone for the basics. Vonage does have a Simulring type of feature. I don't plan on using it, but I have friends that do. Another thing, I would never give a company a years worth of service up front. Those who did this with SunRocket are screwed.
Good luck with Viatalk.

I've used packet8 for 3 yearsand am quite satisfied with them. Their shares are listed and they appear to be fast approaching break even, with their mix of personal and small business accounts.

This is a real bummer. Their customer service was top-notch and their web interface leaves all other VOIP providers in the dust.
Vonage is solid, but they charge extra for features that were standard with Sunrocket. Perhaps that's part of the reason SunRocket went under...
I switched to ViaTalk, which happens to be part of a company that also runs a sizable hosting business. To me, this makes them more stable than other VOIP-only providers.
I'm hesitant to switch to VOIP offered by major telcos since they look to screw customers whenever possible, adding all sorts of hidden fees and "taxes". Don't even get me started on Comcast and their insane pricing for Digital Voice. Thus far, ViaTalk has worked out nicely.

They have already hired the company to do their mass mailings to tell them their shit will be gone very soon.
Lots of their customers think its spam. HAHAHAHA. Indeed it is.

Yeah, after getting a couple of these emails I also had to
make a decision where to go now after SR died. My main goal was to save my
phone number that I had for 3 years. What’s funny is that from the emails SR
sends out, they make it sound like Packet8 and Teleblend
are the only choices. But from what I’ve found out after looking through the
forums is that ViaTalk and JoiPhone
are also highly capable of quickly transferring the number. JoiPhone
was the cheapest of them all, but they didn’t cover my area code
L. So
after weighing all the options I went with ViaTalk
because of their 3 month contract buyout for ex-SR customers and two phone lines
for the price of one. I’m gonna put a fax machine on
a second line.

I want to punch faces! I'm mad that I paid for a year, and my money is pretty much gone. I called Packet8 and it was like "Yeah... we didn't buy them, we're just getting their customers"... meaning I lost the entire $100+ left on my account.

I too am a Sunrocket refugee. It is Aug.7 and my Sunrocket is still great even my voicemail is going again .I am going with Voip.com My number is in the process of being ported in the next day or so and my equipment ia on route with fed ex I signed Aug 1 and even though it was hard to understand the rep( seemed to be from India?) She was great.
I paid $43.00 for activation, shipping and odd fees for 911 reg. fees ect.( one time fees) I will be getting a a $30.00 cash rebate and I believe 1 free month. I will then pay $19.95 per month total. Unlimited local and long distance. It seems strange that when my voicemail was out and I dialed 0, a message came on saying the lines would to down and it was I believe, a telbend messager and i signed with Voip and WA-LA my voicemail works! I'm blessed to have a working phone. My the Lord help all my Sunrocket brothers and sisters. Psalm 91

I use Primus backed Lingo VoIP. It works prettily well. Lingo is financially solid and offers unlimited calling plans to over 230 countries. I can recommend Lingo confidently to all SunRocket victims who are interested in getting special promos.
