ATI graphics to support DisplayPort 1.1 in early 2008
Egads, the industry's move to DisplayPort is hotting up with AMD announcing ATI Radeon graphics processors supporting DisplayPort 1.1 in the "early 2008 timeframe." Just in time to support Samsung's new 30-inch panel scheduled to see production in Q2 2008. In fact, AMD just completed successful interoperability testing of their presumably "next-generation graphics processor" toting a native DisplayPort 1.1 transmitter. Taking a deeper look then into those analyst notes issued last week, we can expect the new interface to appear in ATI's Shanghai-class, R700 FireGL graphics cards. Now all we need is an official announcement from some of the PC boys are we're good to go. Yeah, we're looking at you Dell. [Via I4U News]

Does hotting up mean the same thing as heating up?

oh God, not another "standard". I don't see any advantage over HDMI. They both have the same bandwidth (10Gbit/s forward), and thus the same maximum resolution. They both allow audio and video on the same cable. The only real difference is the physical connectors.
Oh, and the fact that they're not interoperable. Naturally.

Display port can support 2560×1600 resolutions, whereas HDMI can only go up to 1080p60. Display Port is also royalty free and requires less signal processing electronics than HDMI, so devices using it should be cheaper

Actually Phil, HDMI v1.3 is able to support 1600p60 now. I just dont see this taking off, not because HDMI is better, but its already in many electronics and many people are familiar with it already.

DisplayPort is not meant to be a competitor to HDMI... HDMI is a consumer electronics standard.. not PC. It offers DRM handshaking that displayport does not, and does not care about.
If you're building a HTPC.. you better stick with HDMI if you ever want to use BD or HD-DVD. And, HDMI is evolving as well.. the HDMI1.3 standard offers double the transmission rate as 1.2. Its a lot like USB1.0 and 2.0.. same plug but new protocols.

DisplayPort is very much an HDMI competitor. I'd much prefer to see new monitors coming out with HDMI ports than DP ports. It is meant for computers rather than digital media, but here's the question - why _should_ there be a difference? A display is a display, why make it harder to mix and match for the hardware you want in a particular situation? That's why we love standards.

PC's *are* consumer electronics.
And PC's will eventually have HD-DVD and Blu-ray drives.
Please pass me some of that you're smoking.

*passes crazy-smelling smokable material*
Happy?

I don't understand... from my interpretation of this article:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/04/vesa-approves-displayport-1-1-kiss-those-dvi-and-vga-ports-good/
DisplayPort will at least peacefully co-exist with HDMI, and even pass through HDMI signals to HDMI devices using an adapter. AND it will include support for HDCP 1.3. If it really is true that using this connectivity method is cheaper than HDMI, how is this even remotely bad for consumers? Aside from having to buy an adapter of course. The last video card I bought came with all the adapters I'd ever need for it.

Fan-freakin-tastic...another cable to buy.
tekdroid @ Aug 1st 2007 8:02PM
better than paying hidden royalties in every device that uses HDMI, i would say.
poop @ Aug 1st 2007 10:15AM
The advantage (for companies) is no royalty fees because it's a VESA standard. HDMI needs to be licensed for a fee from a few CE companies.
The support WILL pick up for PC displays at the very least.
Neebs @ Aug 1st 2007 10:41AM
Yes ATI, but when will you stop supporting the format that is AGP!
anonymous @ Aug 1st 2007 11:31AM
cables, schmables all I want is wireless. I want a computer with totally wireless and peripherals.
johnzilla @ Aug 1st 2007 11:52AM
Why stop there? Why not just jam the whole rig right into your brain and have an antenna sticking out of your ear?
anonymous @ Aug 1st 2007 12:02PM
I don't need the extra weight.
NetNed @ Aug 1st 2007 1:58PM
With the problems I've seen with compatibility HDMI how could anyone think
a non-DRM'ed plug is bad? Like pirates are stealing a signal from a cable anyway!
They go for burning the DVD's stright up. Hopefully (but I doubt) this will kill
the stupid HDMI standard. Also hopefully it can have longer cords then the stupid legenths
that HDMI has!
