Acturion's Victum Tablet 8 is the UMPC for soldiers of fortune
Thinking about heading out into some harsh territory, really getting down and dirty, or seriously roughing it? Well don't you think you should take a ruggedized UMPC with you, just in case you need to update your Myspace profile while you're gone? That's where the intimidatingly named Acturion Victum Tablet 8 comes in. The company, which is a specialized military and industrial vendor, says that the 8.4-inch, Windows or Linux rocking tablet is resistant against drop, shock, vibration, high and low temperature, rain, and dust and sand, which should make it the perfect companion on those cold, lonely nights. The Victum features a low-voltage 1.2GHz Pentium M processor, up to 1.25GB of RAM, a 40GB or 80GB hard drive, and 802.11a/b/g. The war-ready tablet gets a whopping seven hours of battery life, which we're pretty sure Jack Bauer will appreciate.

Seriously...First FTW!!!..no...screw that. You get -1 internets for thinking it's still cool to say that.
Now..about the article at hand here. This looks pretty cool. No, I may not be a 'soldier of fortune' or anything remotely related to the armed forces, a ruggedized tablet seems to be the perfect thing to take outdoors with me for when I feel like doing sketches and things.

I'm quite sure "this war-ready tablet" has a war-ready price...
Luis @ Aug 2nd 2007 10:37AM
According to their site it's... "inexpensive"

What genious figured "Victum" was an appropriate name for a combat-ready pc?
shmah @ Aug 2nd 2007 12:36PM
this is a german item. Victum is a name, not a translatable word. Victim translated into german is "opfer" not Victum. you need to do your research. it is better to be silent and thought a fool, then to open your mouth and prove it. so next time you mock a name, just remember yours sounds dumb in other languages too.

none of that matters if it's being sold in a country that speaks English. Perhaps you've never heard of what happened when Chevy tried to sell Novas in Spanish speaking countries. "no va" in spanish means No Go. Not many people wanted a car called a Nova. But we'd hope that since this is being marketed as a military thing the people purchasing them would be beyond making their decisions based on a name. Hopefully.

smah? I assume you're going to explain this to each and every english language user? Indeed Brian, but it's not unusual for soldier to be a little supersticious. :)

So, should I refrain from naming my cable company "Cocks"? How about "Cox," is that okay?
And what about Dick Armey? Should we always call him Richard around soldiers so they don't get the wrong idea?
I'm not trying to belittle your incredibly relevant standard, just trying to figure out exactly where to draw the line.

Jack Bauer would need a 24 hour battery life.

Looks upside-down
strider_mt2k @ Aug 2nd 2007 12:47PM
That's just stealth mode to confuse you.
I like it.
And it would rock Ubuntu!
