I agree with oGMo, BD gives a lot of freedom to game-makers, while 360 programmers are restricted to DVD because they have to make the games available for all 360s.
Also, HB96st, your argument about WOW is completely irrelevant here. WOW is an MMO, and paying $15/mo for a game you can only play online is way different from using the 360's online multiplayer for a few rounds of [insert favorite shooter here]. For someone like me, I play FPS games occaisonally, and I would not waste $50 a year just so I can occaisionally join an online match. What does greatly appeal to me is offering this for free, which is what PC games have been offering since their inception (remember Battle.net? Free!) and what the PS3 does.
Also, the only reason I bought a PS3 was because I have an HDTV. If I didn't, I would have no use for a PS3. My PC plays Half-Life 2 at 1024x768 and 4xAA above 60fps, so HD was the only way gaming could get better for me. BD movies are incredible, and really make the PS3 worth every penny.

Sorry oGMo, you're reaching too hard.. And its making you look stupid. I brought my 360 for 1 thing.. ONE. -To play Next-Gen GAMES.
-I didn't need a WiFi plug.
-I Had like 3 DVD players in my house, 1 that stores 5. Why switch to a new format?
-I can afford Xbox Live... MILLIONS play WOW and pay a MONTHLY fee to play ONE GAME. I pay $50.00 A YEAR to play AS MANY GAMES AS I WANT. $50 BUCKS!
"Compared to a $2000 TV or $8000+ in games over the life of the console? Compared to dropping $500-2000 every few years on a PC? You can install Linux on the PS3 ... a box that plays all the latest games *and* runs Linux/OpenOffice/etc and even plays HD movies for $600 is hardly a bad deal. Comparable features on other consoles are even more $$. I think we've been past the price point thing for awhile now. Quit whining."
And you wanna cry about $50 Bucks??!?!? -I think we've been past the $50.00 Live fee thing for awhile now. You Quit whining.
"Plus how much a year for Live? $20? I think someone said that with a 5-year system lifetime, you'd pay $100 for Live, so... toss another $100 on there. And STILL no benefit to games for having the HD-DVD player."
Seriously, you have the nerve to say all that... Pitiful. -you just made yourself look REAL STUPID.
-Oh, with my assistance!
LMAO
Sorry for the double post.
@ Homeboy
So you're saying that if you have an SDTV you should have no reason to buy a console that has more performance, better physics, better online options, newer games, better sound, and better visuals (even on SDTV) than an XBOX, GC, or PS2?
I guess that according to you there was no reason to go from Atari 2600 to NES to Super NES to Genesis to N64 to PS1 to PS2 to XBOX. Seems plenty of people with SD TV's thought they had a reason for buying the newer consoles.
Rumor has it that once the 60GB version is sold out, the 80GB version will get a price drop and move down to $499. Sony is not dumb, they can't raise there prices again after a successful price drop.
What about everyone that buys an 80 gig from now until they do this? They will sell out of 60 gigs by the end of august, so after 1 month they're gonna drop the price? Doubtful. Anyone who bought one this month would be pissed, it would be a huge PR mess for sony. They wouldn't do that after already lying about the price cut.
Spec-related flamewars aside, I'm taken aback by what an ugly box that is. Not the PS3 -- the actual cardboard box. Look at all the disparate logos, ads, screenshots, etc. It reeks of desperation. You'd think Sony would have enough confidence in the PlayStation name to let the product speak for itself.
I'd like a PS3, but if I were walking past that box in the store, it would turn me off. It looks like the box for some cheap plastic G. I. Joe toy. If I'm going to part with $600, I'd like to feel like I'm getting a unique, groundbreaking piece of kit. Compare this eyesore to the elegance of the Wii box, which treats the console as something special unto itself.
I'm reminded of the old "Microsoft redesigns the iPod box" video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeXAcwriid0
LOL.. I was going to point to that same video.
80GB PS3 on sale at my local Target. They had a bunch in stock.
"RUMBLE IS COMING TO LAIR................THAT IS WHY IT HAS BEEN DELAYED TILL SEP 4
just checked out a site!!!"
Site, or Sike!? Show and prove.
-As if it even matters anymore.
Does 80Gb version has 65nm chip inside?
I rented Motorstorm last week and was amazed to find that there's no multiplayer. What kind of racing game doesn't let you race against your friend?
PS3 = Who cares
360 = Who cares
Wii = $250 with Wii Sports included. The coolest next gen system around, and the most popular.
On my way to a friend house. I had to stop by here after to dinner to get my Wii because everyone is in love with it.
"BD on the PS3 has little to do with movies [PLEASE...STOP WITH THE SONY PROPOGANDA] (though once you have an HDTV and a PS3, you'll want to see a few, because they look amazingly better). It's all about capacity. Killzone 2 has amazing detail, but levels are 2GB apiece. On an 8GB DVD, you could fit *three* (as you need some left over for code and other assets). You want to play a 3-level game?"
-UM, Gears of War Looks Better than Killzone... so where is all that memory being used?? -Because its not the graphics! -And that wasnt just 3 levels.
"As for $50/yr (I underestimated at $20, then... a 5-year lifespan would put that at an extra $250), we're comparing base console costs here [YOU DONT NEED A LIVE SUSCRIPTION TO PLAY THE 360.. TALK ABOUT THE CONSOLE], so while Sony may charge you $500-$600 up front, they're not charging you an extra $250 as you go later. Who's shady now?"
-YOU ARE. -Again, since when do you have to buy a Live Suscription to play games? Can you answer that? -And please dont say Shadowrun. -Thats online ONLY. like WoW.... Weak. Try again..
"And the HD-DVD player STILL doesn't benefit games. [DOESN'T HAVE TO... IT'S FOR MOVIES. WHAT WE CALL AND OPTION..] You want to talk about games? Let's get back to space-deprived asset-poor 360 discs. Assets aren't just about graphics (textures, models). It's about the whole level. All the interactive little parts. Voice acting, music. This is why high-capacity media is cool, and why it's important for next-gen games."
Wow... I've been playing next-gen since the release of the XBOX 360... I've seen awesome graphics, Interactive BIG parts, Voice acting (Oblivion, Gears, R6 vegas need I go on?) and music.. I haven't played a "space-deprived" game yet!! So what am I missing that the PS3 got?? Blu-Ray?? -Dont need it. I need Games, and the 360 got that covered to a "T".
Boy, The SDF need better soldiers.. You are WEAK!
Ya Blind baby, You're blind to the fact of who you are for believing in garbage. Sony Got ya'll in a choke hold, And ya'll follow so blindly, It's pathetic. Hopefully, Some of ya'll will see the light this holiday season... I'm gonna have to start to make a list.. So when Sony finally realize defeat, I will post all of the SDF names in MEMORIAM.
And you sound idiotic to be quite honest.
And you have made up my mind about which next gen console i'm going to buy!
Now go back to your room and stay there.
I would still get the 60 with out backward compatibly its not as good. I upgraded my 60 to 120 for like $80. I dont get wats better with the 80gig.
Hey
* WiFi is a nonissue for many gamers who play online. Who wants to use WiFi during a frag fest?
* HD DVD is OPTIONAL and the new deal also comes at $179 plus 5 free titles.
* Newer Xbox 360 Premiums will come with built in HDMI, HDD memory issues would only come with heavy usage of downloadable content i.e. movies, XBLA, music, videos, etc. The newer models will also be $50 cheaper.
* Xbox 360 is also home to the best online service, exclusive content, best video games, best on demand type services, best extending capabilities, best controller and the best GRAPHICS this generation (Yeah I said it).
AHH Flame wars ya gotta love them. This is just asinine rambling. All the comparisons are missing one major point the fact is Microsoft got all kind of flack when it launched the 360. OMG $400 for the console,OMG $60 for the games are they crazy??? Oh and for you that are sure to come back with "The core was/is only $300. Everybody knows that the real 360 experience starts with the pro. WireLESS controller,HDD (Required for Backward Compatibility, updates, downloads etc.) bundled in necessities such as HD cables, headset and more. The Core is unnecessary, should not exist. Add to that the 360 took a year to get a system seller (Gears Of War) that is when I bought mine. Oh and I love mine absolutely awesome machine and the games they just keep coming. I will buy a PS3 it is a solid buy w/Blu-Ray and Wi-fi included. The games are coming and will begin to show the power of The Cell/Blu-Ray combination. So if you really think about it 360 AND the PS3 are GREAT BUYS just try pricing a PC that can come close to the power of either one and quit your bitching, because it is a great time to be a gamer.
I could'nt agree more with your post! :-)
Am I confused or is Sony seriously charging $100 more for 20gb more of space!?! Is this the only difference between the two or am I missing something? I want a PS3 but I could change out the hard drive for less money.
I'm pretty embarrassed that there are people who get in such a state about a simple computer console. Reading some of these, I think that there are some pretty sorry individuals out there. Fancy getting angry just because you chose console x over console y. You don't like console x, don't buy it, you don't have to justify it, just enjoy console y.
One thing is clear, is that the PS3 is an emerging technology as is the Wii and the best is yet to come, let's see if these arguments hold water in a years time.
neat
Perfect.
Sony's Playstation 3 Battle Plan Isn't About Gaming - It's About Costs
http://ce.seekingalpha.com/article/40949
wonder when will consoles have dual gpu in it like if the ps4 has SLI in it and the xbox 720 has crossfire
They have it at the target by my place... along with tons of Wiis.
FINALLY!!!
Everyone know that the PS Triple is better technology when compared to the Xbox Circle. That name sucks too. This is video games. I'm not trying to do geometry. And for everyone complaining about that Triple not having any games. They are forgetting that it plays over 3,000 previous PS games to tide you over until next year. Plus the fact that the triple play Blu-Ray out of the box which is out selling HD-DVD as the next generation media that holds twice as much storage as its competitor, No ugly movie box add-ons like the 360 HD-DVD and has HDMI out of the box which it the future folks. Google it.
Maybe you should add to those calculations all the hardware failures of the 360 with some people already returning their 5th xbox to microsoft...
lol oops.
360 has awesome games now but i bought my ps3 in feb because i think that its a long term investement i remember games i had on floppy disk then they started coming on 4 floppys n then we got cds and games got bigger and now we have DVDs
and still got bigger you got some games on dual layer dvds i believe blu ray will be needed 360 games will be limited by the weaker processor of 360 and storage size of dvd...
its a long term investemn 10 yr life span DAMN you think 360 is gona be able to last that long against the 50 gb games look n play like on ps3 2 yrs down the line?
You guys fail to realize....Sony put the BluRay drive in the PS3 becuase THE GAMES ARE ON BLURAY. Sure it's a nice feature to be able to watch HD movies but the GAMING motivation behind a BluRay drive is that you have 40G worth of space for game information on a PS3 BluRay as opposed to the what 8G you might have on a BIG xbox 360 DVD. Once gaming companies are able to utilize the FULL 40G and FULL power of the PS3 it will be the domination force in the video game department. You wanna talk about graphic improvement once companies figured out how to harness a system's power, compare games on the ps2 like FF12 and God of War 2 to the initial releases on teh PS2. Original ps2 games are laughable in graphic quality compared to the ps2 games of today, this is because software designers figured out how to squeeze every ounce of graphical power out of the ps2 and the discs the ps2 games were on. Just wait until companies have 40G of gaming space and are able to harness the power of the PS3 cell processor, the system will blow your mind with what it is cabable of.
But enough of my rant. The main point I am trynig to get across here is that teh PS3 comes with teh BluRay player not ONLY for movies, but as a higher capacity media for game designers to structure their games upon. With 5X more space (10X once the dual layer blu ray's come out) on the disc than an xbox 360 dvd it gives teh creator SO much more room to do ANYTHING THEY WANY with their games.
There are so many settings in PS3 for BD/DVD. It supports 24 fps output, x.v Color, RGB range (full or limited, the largest impact here is this helps to match the "black" and "white" color of your monitor/HDTV), HDMI 1.3 format which supports 16-bit color processing and DDHD (DTS HD is out of Sony's reach right now), a really amazing line-doubler to upconvert regular DVD from 480p to very good 1080i/p pictures, these are just a few things of the BD player side of PS3, but they are really something only to expect for in top-of-the-line video player. Oh, there's also the up-conversion to 1080p featured in the firmware v1.8+, this conversion between different resolution format actually allows a much needed feature, believe it or not, it allows down-conversion of 1080p to 1080i via HDMI cable. This down-conversion is in fact I found a true plus to the world of BD playing. It means the 1080p content of the BD movie, can be converted into 1080 lines, but instead of displaying progressively, they are interlaced on 1080i HDTV or monitors, what that further means is the 1080p data is not lost while mapping to the 1080i HDTV, the only slight problem is it will be a bit lower quality than the true P2P (pixel to pixel) mapping of a 1080p HDTV, however, if you have seen one on a 1080i HDTV, you would think it is a very close match to a true HD picture. Last but not least, firmware upgrades by Sony is keep on coming, and it is really easy to do.
The gaming side has already been covered here by other comments. The 60G version sells for $499, now if you do a very simple division, you will see $250 for a gaming machine much superior than xbox 360 (and a price matching to wii) and $250 for a top-of-the-line BD player. Don't forget I havn't even mentioned about the WIFI, gigabit Ethernet, bluetooth 2.0, 4xUSB 2.0 and multi I/O ports for memory stick/SD/Compact Flash.
