Apple's new iMac
Who could've seen this one coming? Apple surprised no one this morning with brand new iMacs. Built from aluminum and glass, the new all-in-one desktops feature a complete, slimmer redesign and will come in two sizes: 20-inch and 24-inch. There's the usual compliment of ports like USB 2.0, Firewire 400 / 800, a slot loading SuperDrive, iSight camera and so forth. The new look features a glossy display to match the majority of Apple's consumer lineup, and new keyboards are indeed coming along for the ride -- in an extended wired version as well as a mini wire free model, running the Bluetooth 2.0 spec. Under the hood Apple has up to a 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme processor, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics, up to 1TB of storage, 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.0, with 8x SuperDrives and 1GB of RAM standard across the board. Prices start at $1,199 for the 20-inch, $1,499 for a processor and graphics bump, $1,799 for the 24-incher and $2,299 for Core 2 Extreme. The full rundown of Apple's stock models is after the break.
Update: Corrected the 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme spec, and added a fourth configuration to the rundown.

Pics?
Nice. Dang that's thin.
I need a new one. My stupid cousin stole mine and snuck it into jail inserted in his rectum.
But does it play Doom?
So thin in fact, why would I even think of buying a laptop when I could carry this thing around. Lol.
Yes
In before "Macs dont play games" etc etc
It isnt that thin as it really looks for the PR Pictures. If you see the engadget pics you'd see its a bezeled outer, like an ol' CRT Television. But anyways, nice job there apple ;)
no widescreen? really?
That looks like widescreen to me. There seems to be a black, maybe 1/2 inch, frame wrapped around the screen. So, this may in fact be widescreen.
my bad, looks like it is wide. was hard to tell in the first pic w/o seeing the screen turned on.
That doesn't look widescreen to me. If not, what a joke.
You can tell by the resolutions they listed that they are widescreen models. IE: 1680x1050 is a 16:9 reso.
"Michael
IE: 1680x1050 is a 16:9 reso."
1680x1050 is a 16:10 resolution.
yay for math. 16:10 widescreen actually.
1680x1050 is a really idiotic resolution as 20" TFTs usually have 1600x1200 pixel.
@nonono
1680x1050 is widescreen 16:10
1600x1200 is standard 4:3 and is usually a 20.1 inch screen
No number pad on the keyboard?
Who would have guessed a new imac? No hurry up and tell us what goodies it has inside.
Looks like an overgrown ipod to me. I dont like it.
behold --- Vince the retard
DR PEPPER - You got me laughing out loud. First time in a long time. Thanks! :D
now that's yummy!
1TB! I knew apple endorsed illegal downloading!
No, they just want everybody to have $500,000 worth of Itunes downloads.
Dang, look at the real estate on that thing! Very nice.
Keep it coming, Engadget!
Christ is that thing ever thin!! Nicely done Apple.
Why would you make almost everything on the computer black, and then use white keys on the keyboard and a solid white mouse? This is one of the most mismatched designs Apple's put out in quite a while--I liked the old iMac design better.
I agree. Though, I don't the actual mighty mouse is going to be new iMac's pal for long. Have you read about the new patent Apple recently registered? The one for a mouse with multitouch enabled cover? Imagine that mouse in black and brushed aluminiun and the matching is done!
Me too! I like the old one with white color. Why I liked Apple because I saw its apple white color. Changing back to silver makes it similar to taiwanese cheap cheap monitor. It losts its apple style....
Wow... this is going to make a bad ass Windows Media Center machine, maybe we need to wait for the 30" before making that move.
Check out the one I have now on the Mac Mini
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl53HGzcMTs
O.o Wow, thinner than the previous iMac. After seeing photos of the innards of the older version and how they crammed so much in there, makes me wonder what they did this time to get it even thinner. Times sure have changed since the Apple IIe that I had in my elementary school's computer lab some 15 years ago. ^^;;
And, brushed aluminum looks mighty sexy.
Hmm... I think we're all still in love with white... and (brushed) metal on a Mac" That may be a step back... why not black brushed metal? The keyboard definitely looks thin, but the colour... it looks just like my old one, the one bundled with a Windows 98 PC... I'll rather upgrade a 3G iMac with Mac OS X Leopard but... oh yes, you can't dismantle an iMac and upgrade the processor and stuff... very clever, Apple.
its nice but i would never buy it
Because you were born in a barn
o thats cute ha ha
It would make a great second entertainment system. Twenty Four inch screen with the Apple remote. Perfect for the bedroom to watch movies and late night surfing. Just think what you could do with the built in isight.
Wow... Beautiful!! Brushed aluminum is timeless, classy, and just the way to go! I wish my house was brushed aluminum... but then it would be a starship.
It's not timeless.
Every see brushed aluminum on a building.
It looks like shit.
Your name, sadly, is all too appropriate.
what is that thing covered up next to steve?
I do believe just from what ive seen over a few blogs that is the back panel to teh new imac.
next
"wire free" keyboard? is that an upgradeable option; it is pictured as being wired to the imac. otherwise looks beautiful!
Why are you surprised? This is basically a desktop computer with notebook components. We should expect it to be thin like the macbook pro.
Yes but at least it has a desktop class DirectX 10 GPU and desktop SATA drives.
I thought Macbook Pros had an 8600GT in them.
That's a DX10 card too.
Glossy Display = Sadness
I beg to differ. My laptop has a glossy screen and the LCD screen for my TFT doesn't. Reflections have never been a problem for me unless I'm sitting with my laptop outside, which is something I never do. But with a desktop it is always positioned so that run rays isn't directed at it, which means that you can go glossy all the way.
Glossy screens provide a more crisp and clear projection. Further more pictures/movies look more alive and vivid.
I couldn't agree more. I just turned down an amazing deal on a 46" LCD TV that I've been saving up for for quite some time because when I went to look at it in the store all I saw were reflections, especially in low light scenes. What is the point of a 15k:1 contrast ratio if I can't make out whats on the screen.
For those of you who love your glossy notebooks, and I know there will be a lot of you. I have a MacBook and didn't have an option with the glossy vs non. It's bearable but only to the extent that I can reposition it, which is fine for a notebook. Also most of the time you have lots of white on the screen which helps to hide the glare.
When your talking about a desktop computer or a TV it's much more of a pain in the ass to reposition them to get rid of the glare. Many times moving furniture just isn't feasible.
Gloss is a total deal breaker for me and my entire organization, which is a shame because we were considering converting the entire office to iMacs. Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens to the Mac Mini's or just get MBP's for everyone.
So, Radeon 2600 HD, and still that crappy outdated mac pro graphics offering?
am i the only one here who hates glossy screens? and what's with this design? It looks like the titanium powerbook. And that is so '01.
I hate glossy as well. It's impossible to focus on text while I'm looking at myself.

2GB Ram
DVD Burner $600
1TB Drive $350
$1650 lot more and I rounded up of course its not an all in one but you get much more
Please get back to us when you have managed to find a 32 inch TV with a 1600x1200 resolution for $700. I speak for all of us when I say that we are very interested in picking one up.
You always get less hardware when you buy a mac. Been that way since the first one, and will probably always be that way.
I want one really bad , especially with these new models, but i'm not gonna pay a bigger premium to get what I could have had last year on a PC.
The software is a different story. Good software is priceless. :)
'32" TV/ Monitor westinghouse $700'
Yeah, you forgot to mention a "little" detail: 32" at a craptastic (for non-TV use) 1366x768 res.
Yeah...like a wack load of itchy goodness virus' and blue screens of death! SOLD!
Last time I got a virus on my Windows box was when I was 12 and installed stupid shit left and right that I downloaded from KaZaA.
And yes, I am typing this from OS X, which is the OS I use 90% of the time.
I don't see how you guys can fail so much at computing that you get a virus right away on Windows.
Was this the same for you on OS9 too? Probably was.
tn - Core 2 Duo PC w /
Hahahahahahahahaha
Whu shitty radeon 2600 instead of nvidia 8500/8600? Why?
Some of the summarized information conflicts with the straight stats listed in the break. 1TB is standard? Seems like everyone's rockin' 320GB or less. Core 2 Extreme? A vanilla E6600 is listed (2.4 C2D).
Besides portability and a svelte look (operating system aside), what is the benefit in purchasing a Mac? Dell's 24" is $570 and that leaves enough for the newer, faster E6750 (2.66GHz), twice as much RAM, a 500GB hard drive, a faster DVD burner, and a graphics card that can actually play games.
Apple once again has made consumers pay for their design department's $300 toilet seats and $200 hammers.
My mistake. I misread "up to" as "standard." It's still cheaper to buy your own desktop vs. what they're giving you.
Spend a week with a mac and you will see why Macs are gaining marketing share. And you just "asided" one of the biggest reasons – the OS. Like Lucille Ball said, "It's the user experience!" No wait, she didn't say that, who did say that? Ah, no matter, stick with your Dell if you want, not hurting anyone else.
Would you be surprised how many people just use their computers for emailing, writing documents, and organizing digital media (and burning the occasional CD or DVD). The iMac is designed for the mainstream- everyday people who do common things on their computers... It's not the primary focus of their living space, so why allow it to take over a corner (or a room) of your house? It helps that the specs are high enough to play modern games or even run Maya, Photoshop, Final Cut pro, etc. It's not meant to be the bleeding edge of technology.
I currently own 5 windows-based computers (and I use almost all of them daily), and I rarely, if ever, play games on my systems. I use my computers for work, and I've got a Dreamcast, Wii, and Playstation2 if I ever feel the need to recreate.
Can you find a machine with your listed specs in this compact form factor that'll run OSX? You're playing for the design, convenience, and the ability to run OSX. It's also one sexy talking piece. That said though, I too am a function over form kinda dude, and I'd personally rather spend a little more money on a notebook PC with similar specs. I spend all day working on OSX machines, and I wouldn't want to live with 'em.
You should be able to understand the appeal of a computer like the iMac.
Well the majority of my non-tech friends buy a Mac because it looks pretty and then turn around and install the latest version of Windows on it.
You know - the term 'SuperDrive' is kind of outdated. It originally meant 'DVD burner' when most other systems (including most of Apple's) only had CD burners. These days everyone has 'SuperDrives'.
Which makes them 'AverageDrives'.
"SuperDrive" actually means that it could handle all formats of DVD burning; It never meant a simple DVD burner. I.e. DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-5, DVD-9, etc., etc. And of course, various CD-R formats.
And still only 1gb standart ram on almost $2k(with taxes)unit! Hello, apples! It's august 07!!!
That is the new iMac Steve's going to demonstrate on after he finishes describing the product verbally.
This iMac makes Nicole Richie look fat. It's fairly impressive to get a computer into the space of a monitor. It's as thin as my Acer LCD monitor. I suppose most of you people are jaded, but this is a fine space-saving design. I'm sure you all want the most powerful graphics card you can fit inside this thing, but such a thing is very unlikely due to the inability to cool such a card in the confines of a thin enclosure.
If this iMac is quiet, compact, has decent storage (1TB is decent) and somewhat powerful, then I think Apple has succeeded in making a useful desktop computer that most people would want to buy.
Actually if you think about it logically it's not that impressive since the iMacs do use laptop components which does make it fairly easy to squeeze all the components into a thin enclosure. Lastly the components like the graphic card, motherboard and CPU isn't user replaceable which also does add to the easyness of the whole "magic".
Those are actually NOT just laptop components. The Power Supply and HD are desktop components (better bang for the buck with HDs). And it is a hell of a lot cheper than the equivalent Mac Laptop.
No one mentioned that they added DVD-R DL, while before all they had was DVD+R DL. Also they are now using the Santa Rosa chipset, which is more power efficient and lets you get to 4 GB instead of 3 (how long did it take Intel to fix that problem? About time they fixed it in the iMac). Also glad to see FW 800 is now standard across the iMac line and that the keyboard is FINALLY a USB 2.0 hub - you can actually plug your camera into the keyboard and not have to resort to plugging it into the back of the unit....
I wonder if the specs on the iSight are the same as those on the recent MacBook Pros, with the higher res (the new laptops go higher than 640x480). I guess we will have to wait until someone posts some tests...
I'm typing this using a MacBook Pro C2D, but I'm still impressed. I grew up in an era of bulky desktops. I know it's not "magic". I use my MBP every day yet I'm still impressed that it's way faster, more convenient and much lighter than my so-called workhorse FW800 dualie G4 that weighs 38 plus pounds less monitor.
Only 1GB of RAM? Seriously, who buys a computer with only 1GB of RAM these days?
people who don't know what RAM stands for, are perfectly happy with a GB of RAM - and unlike Vista, a GB of RAM gets a lot done on the fully mature operating system. Don't want to rant on Vista like everyone else, but its an accepted fact even amongst true Windows fans.
I don't know about the front design, but damn, I thought Apple couldn't get'em any thinner than the current (previous as of now) iMac. As a Black MacBook owner, the black doesn't tie in well with the white. The range should have been a classic all-white one and an all black one with a white Apple logo. In tune with the MacBooks and looking mighty better than this mishap.
Personally, I was expecting a more "radical" re-design. This is certainly cool-looking, but it's a bit disappointing compared to awesome surprise that was the previous-gen iMac.
And don't even get me started on .Mac!
looks beautiful. a little disappointed though about the RAM, and am completely ignorant to the video cards.
"I've got a Dreamcast, Wii, and Playstation2 if I ever feel the need to recreate."
"You should be able to understand the appeal of a computer like the iMac."
The End.
People using that keyboard are begging to get Carpal tunnel syndrome. Other than that the computer is pretty thin. Not sure how much sound they are going to make considering the Extreme Processor.
You do realize that flatter keyboards are better for preventing carpel tunnel, not worse right?
The pain comes from when you flips your hands up to use a keyboard, flattening them out relaxes your wrists and causes less stress.
I have carpel tunnel syndrome and the single best thing I did for it was buy a flat keyboard for my PC.
actually 1680 by 1050 is 16:10 ration not 16:9
Nice! Always used Mac!
So they blew it by not making the mouse and keyboard bluetooth. Why have something so svelte and still have wires running everywhere?
BS- not 1 TB, ,it doesnt even get up to half a TB, please EDIT!
looks like someone forgot to close an "a" tag!
It should have been all black with a steel trim. (a la iphone looks) And can that Apple logo be any bigger? Overall: not impressive.
How the hell do they keep it running cool? That small of a design and they expect you to be editing movies on it? Hello house heater!
this will fit perfectly whit my blackbook, still its a shame the keyboard is white
Not including bluetooth key/mouse is a godsend. I have yet to find a bluetooth set up that isn't at least a little but laggy. This is especially noticeable to graphic artists. Stay wired or nothing.
Absolutely, I have a Microsoft media center bluetooth keyboard and sometimes it feels like the mouse cursor is being dragged around by a piece of elastic. Gaming is definitely out of the question
Nice design, great pricing, but as an Apple tech, it looks like another nightmare to work on.
Even more of a nightmare than a G4 Gooseneck?
People are just looking for reasons to complain.
@Stephan: the keyboard is bluetooth
@timelessfilms: up to 1 TB
@all other haters: We had the same thing w/ the MBP u
Check the configuration options on the site. the 24" model can go up to 1TB of storage, and YOU CAN GET IT WITH A 2.8GHZ CORE 2 EXTREME instead of a c2d. Woot!
Sweet as a nut WELL DONE my 24incher is going back in its box and im waiting for a new one.....OH YES!
www.ukmac.co.uk
Apple didn't say anything about 2.8 Ghz which is located on the specs page of the new iMac.
I wonder why that is.
http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html
I like it better than last generation's iMac, but to me, none of this trumps the look of the one from two generations ago. I really liked that screen-on-a-stick.
The fourth config option for the 24" iMac on the stock models is this (caught before store went back down):
2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme
2GB RAM
500GB Hard Drive
The rest was the same as the standard 24".
Price was $2299
