Latest iPods to be flash-based, only up to 16GB?

[Thanks, Sam]

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
In other news, Toyota just announced its 2008 lineup, with no model going faster than 60 mph but with the major advantage that it's all new technology under the hood.
Does anyone believe this? I can see them beefing up the Nanos with the extra space but dropping the large iPods all-together? Doubtful. Video iPods are still selling very strong, there's no reason to cut one of your best-selling products. What I can believe is that Apple will upgrade the Nanos, giving them better space and making them a more tantalising option for those of us with larger libraries.
i think that what they are doing is adding a new video ipod with a 16gb capacity while keeping the current 5.5G video ipod. they aren't going to release that next-gen video ipod that everyone wants with a large and bulky HDD. its going to be much like the iphone. if this next-gen video ipod is going to ever happen, they won't put old school HDD technology in it.
so im pretty sure you guys can look forward to two video ipods floating around.
let me just ask this... but how many of you actually think that apple will put a HDD with a large capacity in the 6G ipod????? don't people see that they are soo slow. i hate my ipod because its so slow. an ipod with really high technology is going to need flash technology to run fast enough.
just imagine the iphone with a HDD. it would be so slow you would be pulling your hair out. think about it guys. apple has even said that they want to transition ALL its products to flash. this is the start of that transition.
Archos 605 baby. Come on September!
so if these flash memory cards are smaller than a HD why cant they kind of daisy chain two 16 GB cards to work as a 32 GB? im no expert on Flash memory.. just asking.. no need to start yellin at me.
Instead of bickering about what people SHOULD or SHOULD NOT be putting on their iPods (which sounds petty and borderline fascist), how about focusing on what makes for good business?
Obviously lots of people want the sheer capacity of large hard-drive based iPods. And there are lots of people want the convenience of flash based ones and don’t care about large capacities. Assuming the economics are there, why would Apple be stupid enough to ignore either group just to make a point that doesn't need to be made? Yes the future is flash.... but not yet.
The nano will inevitably go to 16 and eventually 32 Gb models and may include a screen if they can do it without increasing the size and still making it usable (hard to imagine). The iPod will continue to be the large capacity flagship audio/video player with the likely addition of an iPhone-like touchscreen.
But the notion that Apple would downgrade the top of the line 80 GB iPod to a 16 GB flash model is at best a flash fanboy fantasy. It certainly isn’t a sound business strategy for a company that tries to provide a variety of players at every price point.
I love how people feel the need to announce they have a large music collection.
Oh, and to the guy that said that this is going to be a Nano with a bigger touch screen, don't you think that would defeat the purpose of having a iPod Nano? They are meant to be small, not the same size as the full size iPod.
Creative has already beaten Apple by releasing a 16GB Zen V+. Unlike the iPod Nano, it can play videos. Ditch the iPod and go with a Zen.
Please Apple, all I want is something that holds my 60 gigs of music and has a touchscreen F the flash, gimmie the goods I've been waiting since I first got my (currently used) 20gig 3G (best interface beside touchscreen) pod.
Well I've created a compact flash video ipod, and while the capacity is a lot less than the hdd versions, you do benefit from having solid state internals.
No more worrying about dropping the thing and most important for me is the much longer operating times on a single charge.

Everyone, stop buying iPods. Get a Zen. Creative sales are poor in the US because everyone keeps buying iPods.
For those who haven't tried it, the iPod part of the iPhone is amazing. If the new iPods ONLY do what it does on iPhone, it'll be fantastic.
p.s. why buy Zen's? Because their sales are poor? So? People buy iPods because they are better and cooler. If Zen wanted to improve their sales maybe they should, I don't know, market them better?
