Canon's EOS 40D DSLR coming next month?
We've already had a few indications that Canon would be releasing its still-unannounced EOS 40D DSLR sooner or later, but it looks like that day could now be fast approaching, at least according to this shot supposedly taken of a Best Buy computer. As you can see above (if you squint hard enough), it lists the EOS 40D with an "in-stock date" of 09-02-2007 and, according to the person that took the picture, it'll retail for $1599.99. The non-Canon website Canon-EOS-40D.com (linked below) also turned up a shot similar to the one above, and has some rumored specs for the camera to boot, including a 10.2 megapixel sensor, 2.5-inch LCD, DIGIC III image processor, and an ISO range from 100 to 3200, among other desirable features. As for whether those will actually pan out, we'll just have to wait and see.

If this is correct, than that price of 1599.99 is probably for the camera with lense since you can see "w/" at the end of the description, so the body is obviously a little less than that.

Kit includes a 28-135 IS lens. you heard it here first.
KorruptioN @ Aug 8th 2007 12:33PM
Likely not. The 28-135IS is definitely not wide enough on a crop sensor.
BillyBob @ Aug 8th 2007 1:37PM
The 30D is now available as a kit with the EF28-135IS:

I believe that $1600 includes the 28-135IS lens, primarily because the bodies of the 10D/20D/30D/40D have been getting cheaper with each release, and $1600 is quite pricey. It makes sense that this particular kit includes an $400 lens instead of the cheapo 18-55 lens.
Plus, we should all consider that this is just Best Buy forcing customers to buy an expensive lens if they want the camera. The "official" kit lens could still be the 18-55.

Well whats more in this SLR that it retails for 1599$ ?? if its 10.2MP, it falls into dangerously similar categories like the EVOLT 510 or Canons other models is it only becuase of the lens that it is so costly?

The sensor is much larger (22x15 instead of 18x13) for one thing. Larger sensors produce better images.
almostinfamous @ Aug 8th 2007 1:32PM
d200 is still better ;)
Dan @ Aug 8th 2007 12:51PM
AT least it's not blurry.

People still use Microsoft Internet Explorer? That's what it looks like from the picture.
SBrooks1 @ Aug 8th 2007 1:58PM
All Best Buy computers on the floor use Internet Explorer for web browsing. I work there too.

I'm assuming this 40D isn't comparable to the 5D in anyway but just a newer version of the prosumer Rebel?
I forget sensor dimensions but the 5D body alone is over $2000 isn't it?
Canon_User @ Aug 9th 2007 4:30PM
Newer version of the prosumer rebel? Have you ever used both the rebel and the xxD line?
The construction and features are much better on the 10/20/30D bodies. Magnesium frame. Longer life shutter. Wider ISO range. More FPS. More "pro" features like Mirror Lockup. Bigger buffer for more RAW shooting. The list goes on.
The Rebel is a plastic body. It feels like a toy in comparison.
Mike @ Aug 8th 2007 2:55PM
It is the replacement for the 30d
sr20de @ Aug 17th 2007 12:29PM
canon_user: The Rebel XTi has a mirror lockup function. Just FYI. My biggest complaint with the Rebel lineup is the terrible grip. I grab the 5D and there is NO comparison.
Xee @ Aug 8th 2007 3:37PM
I wonder if they bumped up the FPS a bit from the 30D's 5.
Jamiya @ Aug 8th 2007 9:10PM
They have already stopped selling it at Ritz Camera's website. I looked a few times tonight thinking I saw an error but its confirmed they no longer carry them on their site. I guess this news has some truth to it! Check the site for yourself and you'll see!

yea that great, but the out of stock date is 9/02/2010. I have 3 years to wait until I can make this comment again.
Chosenbydestiny @ Aug 9th 2007 2:33PM
I heard of an FPS upgrade, 6.2? Something like that. Just a rumor though.

Stopped by a Best Buy today (8-11-07) - the rep confirmed that the 40D is in their system, that it would be sold with a 28-135mm lens - said sept. 2nd - but no other specs - He added that he was surprised it was listed there even though it has not been announced. He said he's never seen canon do that before, even after years of working there... Interesting indeed.
