Ford's Sync phone / DAP integration gets priced at $395

Looks like Ford's pricing the Sync extensible automotive media platform right in line with most other DAP / Bluetooth integration solutions: Dearborn announced today that the system will be a $395 option on new Focus, Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles starting this fall. Ford also said that Sync will be coming to nine other vehicles by 2008, but honestly, we're not going to be satisfied on the carputer tip until we get Turbo Boost and a sweeping red scanner light.

Here in Canada, when unveiled, Ford Canada president said that it was included on all new fords (including the focus) as a standard option.

Maybe thats just in Canada here though, or maybe they changed their mind

"Standard" and "option" are polar opposites in the auto world.

I think he meant it would be available as an option in most new Ford vehicles, which makes sense as the entire line post 2006 use the same 4 head units, with two other models available for the Lincoln/Mercury line. I hope this hits showfloors soon, because if I like what I see I might get one for my 05 F-150 if I can make it work with it.

I think I read the transcript of that same speech, as I could have swore it was right after that he mentioned something about the popularity of the Mondeo over in europe, and how he'd like to blend it with the Fusion, thereby bringing the Mondeo's styling to the US while making 90 percent of the parts standard across both lines.

Because this will sell many more cars, and at almost no cost to ford (probably cost's them $50 to make these). Why spend thousands improving quality when this will increase sales by the same amount?

You are a moron. Ford and GM automobiles have quality comparable to Toyota and Honda today. In fact, the Ford Fusion sedan had the highest initial quality rating in the mid-sized sector.

Personally I would rather drive a superior-driving Honda, but quality is not a big issue anymore for these automakers.

You might want to read the latest JD Powers reports over on autoblog. While not the best they beat out most of the industry. And if you want better, go with the Mercury veriant which beat out Honda, Toyaota and BMW.

for everyone complaining about ford's quality, you should do a little bit of research... the Fusion & Focus have been rocking on reliability and dependability reports, and the Mustang tied for first in it's class (beating out Toyota) in JD Power's latest dependability ratings.

learn how to spell before you try to use the same old unoriginal FOUND on road dead, cut down. try doing a little research, like how there are more ford half tonnes out there with over 300,000 km or 180,000 miles on the road than any other manufacturer. sounds like the bowtie and ram are dead.

yes gm and dodge do good things too, dont get me wrong, but dodge uses cummins diesle engines...owned by ford!!! and gm's always have more hp, yet fords payload/towing is always rated higher. how does that work? oh ya! a quality built frame and structure! ford can do more, with less i guess.

i really dont get what it is about people complaining about a lot of manufacturers these days, and their quality. i had to rip into someone on another board because they insisted that hyundai was a "crap" company, and made autos that simply were not reliable. You can never base a company on their performance from 15 years ago.

But on a side note, this is a very good step for ford. Its innovation and integration like this which Detroit needs to throw into their cars to make them desirable again. You just have to have the fun/cool factor to sell cars these days, and good mpg.

My company just got us grunts a new 08 Ford F-350 with the new 6.8L diesel. I am going out on a limb, but IMHO this thing is the finest truck Ford has ever made. The fit and finish on the body panels and interior is excellent. The engine(International made) is very powerful and amazingly quiet. If this vehicle is any indication of the direction Dearborn is going, than the import company's had better keep their game sharp. Most of the trucks (Ford) at my work have 150-200000 miles on them They all still pull hard and have had no major problems, so I'm not quite sure how much quality one needs. Oh. My personnel car is a Toyota as in not a Ford "fanboy". I got it because it fits my needs, witch I suppose is why you would buy any product.

My dad has had 10 ford tucks. Nine of them fell apart with under 150 thousand miles. He has also had a GMC and Chevy. Both lasted over 230 thousand miles. The one ford the lived was a 85 diesel. Diesel Fords should not be compared to gas Fords. A Diesel Engine should last 300 thousand miles, which is why those Fords are built better. That being said even diesel Fords have problems (rotting oil pans). In the long run fords, including that 08 F-350 that JB mentioned will break quicker than others.

I own one. Not a bad car. I have the V6 AWD Premier.

My only complaints are the turning radius is horrible, and the transmission (which is actually made by Toyota) is sometimes unresponsive. Lots of power, great handling, roomy interior, reasonably priced (especially for an AWD sedan), looks pretty good, and gets decent gas mileage.

The truth is, Ford has done more than any of the other big US automakers to rival foreign auto makers quality and style. That was reflected by the amount of awards they got with these last few models. Its sad that it took them so long to see how far behind they were, but at least they did and are striving to make better cars now.

Personally, I'd like to see this Trickle-down through FoMoCo. If they can integrate it into the Mazda3, I'd be all over it. Otherwise, I'll just have to keep lookin' at Fusions.

You need to check your facts. JD Power just released their 3 year quality study and Ford was placed very well. Ahead of such brands as:
Audi, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Volvo, VW, etc.

However, I for one, don't want any MS Crap anywhere near my car.

Why do forum trolls love to make such broad, vague, and inflamatory statements without backing them up in the slightest?

The F-150 continues to outsell every other car in it's class so obviously they are doing something right. I'm sure Honda and Toyota make wonderful little sedans and rice burning hatchbacks, but when it comes to working trucks they can't even begin to compete with Ford or GMC. People who spend more time watching car commercials then actually looking under and inside the cars themselves should refrain from making such absolute statements regarding quality. Then again, not like this is a perfect world we live in or anything.

Ever wonder why Ford owners spend such little time bashing the competition? Might want to consider it has something to do with complete satisfaction in their vehicle of choice leaving them no reason to even worry about the other brands. From the syncmyride.com site: "Sync will debut in Fall 2007 on the following 2008-model Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models: Edge, Explorer, Focus, Fusion, Taurus, Taurus X, Milan, MKX, MKZ, Mountaineer, Sable and Sport-Trac. Additional Sync-equipped vehicles will be rolled out as quickly as possible." It will be standard on some vehicles, like the Edge Limited & the Focus SES, but will be an option for other models.
