Pricey Galactic Suite space hotel aims for 2012 opening
Believe it or not, booking a hotel in space may become a reality sooner rather than later, and if things go as planned, the Galactic Suite will actually be welcoming in guests sans gravity in just five short years. Folks who make the trip will be able to "see the sun rise 15 times a day and use Velcro suits to crawl around their rooms by sticking themselves to the walls," and while spas with floating water sure sounds like something we'd be interested in, the nightly fees are quite literally out of this world. How much? Try $4 million for a three-day stay -- better bring your camera, eh?

HMMMM, pretty cheap!
Ark Angel by Anthony Harowitz is coming true? OMG!
I'd imagine transportation costs would be almost as much as the 3 day stay.
I'd hate to be on one of those bay window rooms when it's pointed directly at the sun. Sort of like 'beer can' chicken in reverse.
Here's the thing, they have alreay said they can't guarantee the saftey of those they send up in the shuttle, the vehicals are just simply to old and they can't mantain them. A couple of weeks ago vigin's test rocket to be used for civilian space travel exploded in the desert during testing killing 3 people and injuring 5. There are constant stories in the news about them having to repair the space station thats years behind schedule of being built and ontop of all that they think china may be developing missiles that they can fire into space and hit anywhere on the planet or anything in space.
The idea that this is a good idea or even simply possible within the next 5 years is ridiculous.
:(
Why the hell would the Chinese decide to blow it up? I can't believe there are people out there who still view China as "the enemy".
North Korea, now, that's another matter :D
1) china is an ally
2) youre an idiot
3) why does everybody view the chinese as bad people?
4) youre an idiot
5) the chinese are MUCH nicer than most other countries
6) youre an idiot
7) let those rich people waste their money/lives
8) youre an idiot
You misunderstood, i wasn't saying china was an enemy, infact my wife is from china, but it does sound like a bit of a soft spot on your part. What i was saying is that ontop of the many monetary and saftey issues that make it a dumb idea, having a hotel in an area where anyone is testing nuclear weapons, rockets and as it turns out weaponized lazers as well just seems to me like a jackass thing to do, much like your replies. Mistakes happen, parts fall off of rockets an theres litterally thousands of pieces of garbage floating around out there.
Next time think then type.
Who the hell is "testing nuclear weapons, rockets and as it turns out weaponized lazers" in space?
Certainly not the Chinese...
And as for space debris... The biggest, most dangerous bits are constantly tracked by the military, but do you not think it might also be something the designers of the hotel might take account of?
Next time think, full stop.
While I don't think this is in danger it being used as target practice by China, I wouldn't exactly call China an ally. There are a LOT of areas of conflict and even more potential areas of conflict between the west and China. And why is it that people cannot seem to distinguish between the Chinese PEOPLE and the Chinese GOVERNMENT. They are NOT the same thing. The Chinese people may be the nicest people on earth, but the Chinese government has done and is currently engaged in some very questionable practices - against its own people.
As far as space debris, there is no such thing as "the biggest most dangerous bits". A speck of sand could wipe out that hotel if it hit just right. And, while I'm sure that the hotel designers have considered that, I personally wouldn't put my life in their hands. I suspect that their solution to that problem would be an insurance policy, not any kind of extra shielding that might actually save a life.
Ok chezzo, lets try this again...

Whereas the info on the chinese tech being used against satellites is fascinating, it's hardly indicative of a weaponized aggression. I'm pretty sure the laser tech can be countered by certain means and as far as the missiles go, we haven't been given any reason to take a fierce stand against the chinese govt at this point in time. I'm sure the Pentagon is keeping a close eye on them. However, I think most governments recognize by now that this is a highly globalized world, and capitalistic to boot as demonstrated by this space motel fantasy, and any on-going war could damage a nation's ability to make money. Such as how we're hurting now with Iraq.
The 4 million dollars includes the 8 week training required to go into space, the trip up there and back, and the stay. It's not actually a bad price considering all the accomadations.
Yeah... and zero gravity sex for that price... or 8 mil if you want a partner.
what a waste of money
Sunny beach or dark space? I guess I'll stay on Earth.
Oh, and Dylan, please grow up.
Aren't gravity generators possible by now?
I expect $4,000,000 to at least get me gravity.
I am guessing you are launched by the Russians or Chinese as well?
Screw gravity, that's the entire fun of it!
You can get gravity for free, just stay on earth. Isn't part of the point of a space hotel the freefall experience? I know it would be for me.
Of course they have gravity generators. It's called "matter".
Looks like a bunch of cigarette butts smushed together to me.
Nice fantasy, but the 2012 date is just that, a fantasy.
I think Bigelow will get his first manned space station operational around that date (2012), but nothing the size of what they describe. And Bigelow is already testing his systems in space; these folks are still at the Powerpoint and Photoshop stage.
Future conversation:
"Hey, remember back in 2012, when all those rich, vain idiots died horribly in that dumb-ass space hotel?"
"Yeah, that was great!"
One word...
Overoptimistic.
I agree... it is overoptimistic. Then again, so was getting Americans on the moon "within the decade," when you consider the scary shape of the UA space program at the time.
Obviously, it's apples and oranges to compare a nation to a corporation. My point is that the difference between overoptimism and reality can be just a few really good technological breakthroughs...
I agree it's over optimistic but still within the realm of posability. I am in awe of the shear guts it took for man to make it to the moon with the primitive technology they had in the late 60's. I was six at the time and didn't leave the TV except to use the toilet the whole time they were broadcasting. I remember wakeing up the next morining on the floor in front of the TV with a blanket over me. If you ever visit one of the space museums that has any of the space craft from that era take a close look at the electronics in one of the open access panels. Glass tubes! Wire wrap connectors, fiberboard to mount the electronics on, paper insulation on transformers etc. I'd heasatate to fly a plane 50 ft off the ground with electronics like that! They were bave men indead!
That hotel is unlikely but... you never know, humans sometimes do astounding things.
You shouldn't have to pay that much for a sticky hotel room. Plenty of places here on Earth will rent you one by the hour, and for an additional fee, someone will take you into orbit, around the world, or to the moon.
I mean gravity in the bathrooms maybe at least.....I don't want to **** floating and then have it float around in a hotel.
$4,000,000 is worth zero-g sex.
Space hotel projected to be open: 2012.
Me projected being able to afford it: 2613.
My only hope now is that science can find a way to ensure Bible-esque lifespans. Well, I guess it's back to making foam ball space mobiles and pretending it's the "real deal."
Is it just me, or can we not picture ourselves staying in a space hotel that looks like a handful of big tampons roped together at the strings?
not to mention, they should install some special security against vermicious knids!
SCRAM! :)
Okay..since the 20th century what the the government or any affiliated agencies presented to the gullible american public that was not facade or basis for something entirely different? What is REALLY going on here? WHO are the real culprits behind this? WHAT is the true end outcome purpose? Perhaps americans had better start praying earnestly...and mean it!
Honestly, shouldn't the money that is going to be used to build this go to something more beneficial to space exploration rather than a retreat for the the exclusive super rich?
Is something like this really even practical...
