Windows Mobile 6 unofficially meets Dell's Axim X50v
Sure, it's been nearly three full years since Dell's Axim X50v was the envy of all your neighbors, and while you aren't likely to find any official updates for the PDA coming out of Round Rock anytime soon, there's (nearly) nothing an engineering mind can't whip up. That said, folks dreaming about migrating Windows Mobile 6 onto their X50v can snap out of it and get to work, as a pioneering individual has apparently managed to do just that. 'Course, we'd recommend that you think long and hard before installing unofficial software onto your handheld, but if you're the mettlesome type, feel free to hit the read link and try 'er out.

i was supposed to get a free upgrade for wm5 when it came out for my axim x50v, but it never showed up in my mailbox...

Craig,
They must have sent your CD to me! :) I received one in the mail, but I have an X51v. If you still want it, let me know and I'll toss it in the mail to you.

so I wonder if this works for my v51x? ...*runs off to try*

Not so fast there, apparently its only for the x50v right now, x51v is currently in the works...
good thing i have one of each, except my older, less capable unit is now fast than my 51v

It works well enough for me. I don't see any advantage, but it's prettier.

Kudos to the developers! This is as good as the Motorola MPx200 which jumped 2 generations of OS from Windows Smartphone 2002 to Windows Mobile 5 on the same hardware thanks to the work of hackers.

Hmmm, makes me want to look and see if anybody has hacked a new OS into my Axim X3i -- maybe I'd start using it again if it got an upgrade...
James @ Aug 13th 2007 12:21AM
Update: looks like we X3 owners are exactly as shafted as we always have been. Take note: if anybody wants to know why Dell stopped making Axim, I'm guessing it was poor sales. And why poor sales? Screwing over current customers to move more of your newer models is probably a start. Good riddance, Dell.

Wow, I'm impressed. Engadget reports on a cool story for Axim owners, and Aximsite closes all threads that get close it. I give you guys at Engadget credit for putting this up! Check out this Aximsite thread if you want to comment - http://www.aximsite.com/boards/x50-x51-forums/216880-do-you-feel-discussion-wm6-upgrade-axim-should-allowed-here.html
