SlingPlayer Mobile for Symbian in private beta
Windows Mobile and Palm devices won't be having all the placeshifting fun for much longer. Though carrier Hutchison 3 has had its own version for some time through its X-Series line, a generic, widely available SlingPlayer Mobile for Symbian has eluded the populace for ages; thankfully, it looks like that's all about to change with Sling announcing a private beta for its upcoming S60-based player. At this point, the beta's focus is pretty limited -- you've gotta be in the US and you need to be rocking a Nokia E65, N75, or N95. High speed data is obviously crucial here, and those three models happen to sport the prerequisite S60 plus WiFi -- in the case of the E65 and N95 -- or 3G, if you've gone the N75 route. Any Slingbox model will get the job done, and other than that, you basically just have to be able to keep your mouth shut, fill out some forms, and enjoy plenty of placeshifted teevee. The beta's tentatively scheduled to last about four weeks, so here's hoping we'll see a public release soon thereafter.

Sneakz @ Aug 12th 2007 3:36PM
Oops, didn't read the whole article. Wish Nokia did a S60 clamshell with Wi-Fi though.

Greatwhtninja @ Aug 12th 2007 5:24PM
Yeah um Sneakz... Never heard of the N92, N93 or the N93i? They are all clamshell wifi s60 phones. Where the hell is the N80 love? It is head and shoulders better than the N75 or E65 as far as stats, it almost matches the N95... I want my slingbox =-(
Douglas @ Aug 12th 2007 6:07PM
Yeah, no N80? It's S60 3rd Ed. and has WiFi...
LarsG @ Aug 12th 2007 5:37PM
David, didn't you get the memo? No SDK for the iPhone.
Ahmed @ Aug 12th 2007 5:48PM

SlingPlayer will be a really nice add-on if you have one of the large-screen Series 60 devices (e.g., Nokia E61/E61i, or even better, the new E90 Communicator with its 800 x 352 LCD).

WTF? Why not run on an E61, E61i, E62, or more importantly my beloved E70? I certainly hope this is just a limitation for the beta. There is NO excuse for them to exclude hardware that runs the same Series60v3 OS. I'm pretty sure the phones listed aren't running FP1, either.

finally there is something new on the cool mobile device and IT'S US ONLY. We kinda start getting used to wait for cool mobile stuffs coming from Europe or Asia and forgot since when the US became the mobile third world country. Looking forward to hear more about the exciting development in US mobile market.
Jon @ Aug 13th 2007 5:54PM
Not exactly... we already have it here in the UK.
N95 Pro @ Aug 13th 2007 7:14PM
Really, um...guess we are still in the mobile third world country. Lucky you.

I want a Blackberry client! My 8830 can handle it! Only reason I miss my Treo is SlingPlayer!
Mark @ Aug 13th 2007 4:09AM
How does this differ to the slingplayer client I can already put on to my N95 here in the UK?
Eric @ Aug 13th 2007 9:12AM
Wow. I guess I'm saying goodbye to VZW when the contract is up. That was the only thing on my wishlist for the N95, especially since they are upping the battery life for the US market.
oxfdblue @ Aug 13th 2007 10:35AM
BLACKBERRY!!! When are they going to make a player for Blackberry?? It is amazing how they can ignore that market. Over the several million RIMM handsets out there, I have to believe that a significant number of those people have a Slingbox...ceratinly enough to make a capatible player worth their while.
Nando @ Aug 14th 2007 2:04PM
So I signed up...but there is nothing in the Symbian project page...what's up with that? Anyone see/get the .sis file yet?
