good vibes, has announced plans to begin outfitting its citizens with a new kind of ID card; one with an embedded chip that will include the holder's name, address, work history, educational background, religion, ethnicity, police record, medical insurance status and landlord's phone number. The cards will also carry reproductive history information, to further aid authorities in enforcing China's "one child" policy. Ostensibly, the cards will keep track of the large influx of peasants moving to cities, though Michael Lin, VP of China Public Security Technology, went on (in Orwellian fashion) to say; "If they do not get the permanent card, they cannot live here, they cannot get government benefits, and that is a way for the government to control the population in the future." Additionally, authorities are aggressively installing new security cameras around cities like Shenzhen, which utilize sophisticated recognition software co-developed by US companies like
IBM,
HP, and
Dell. When reached for comment at the Ministry of Truth, the Chinese version of Big Brother was unavailable, as he was busy rationing out Soylent Green, Soma, and Ludovico technique treatments.

which people used to say was a tattoo but thats because one word was lost in translation it specifically said "In you're finger" in the king james version.

i think originally barcodes were broken into 3 bands each band separated by the number 6 so each barcode had the number 666 embedded in it, as far as i know this is no longer the case though.
It's arguably heavy handed stuff but this is where technology is headed, for all of us.
And I'd ask how anyone else might try to track 1.3 billion people?
Our Western governments already have all this information about us on files. The only difference is that the Chinese want to put it on a single card. Ever filled in a census?
I'm British, and I always find it heart-warming to read that we're in the top/ bottom five countries in the world for being under surveillance http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6108496.stm - but it's okay! It's for our own protection!
The one-child policy is harsh (if you're a Chinese person living in a city; in the countryside there are no restrictions), but what's the alternative? Should China be like India, where the population is uncontrolled and exploding at a massive rate - to the point where it'll be the most-populous nation on Earth by 2050?

Not really, if you are rich, then you can pay the amercement for your children. Most couples(who have more children) in the countryside were percecuted: houses were put into ruins, treasure was taken away by the officiers(this happend when I was in the elementary school), I'm a Chinese.
As far as I understand, the one child policy is being loosened up nowadays compared to when it was first implemented. As of now, couples can legally have two children if, one or both parents come from a minority ethnic group, or both parents are the only child in their respective families. If you exceed your quota, you do have to pay a handsome fine.

Why do I only see these ID schemes turning into a bad thing. So if the whole of Chinas population has all there stuff on a single card.. how much do you think Chinese peasants will sell stolen cards for? How long before these cards are manipulated to allow known terrorists into Western countries?

Britain is trying to bring in an id card (run by the same companies) that will hold the exact same information as the Chinese card; why no article about the evil British government then ay? Maybe because the British are not Chinese? How is it that what the Chinese are doing is more wrone than an identical scheme that the British are trying to introduce?
