Nah, Next Safety's approach to curbing
smoking isn't nearly as fun as puffing on
Golden Dragon's Ruyan e-cigarettes, but it just might do the trick. Reportedly, this North Carolina-based
startup plans to bring a "nicotine-delivery product" to market which would actually "deliver nicotine to the brain faster and safer than cigarettes," all while protecting children and nonsmokers from secondhand smoke. Interestingly, the pulmonary drug-deliverer (which works similarly to a medical inhaler) is said to provide "a stronger kick" than smoking, but actually
administers a smaller amount of nicotine to the body than your average Marlboro. Currently, the firm is hoping to release it into less restricted overseas markets by the year's end, but analysts here in America are questioning its ability to pass through all the red tape required for it to hit our shelves.

Not at all. The idea is to deliver medications, in this case nicotine, through the pulmonary system in such a way that the absorption rate is increased significantly over inhalors and aerosols. Next Safety is developing technology that can do this. Nicotine replacement therapy was chosen as an entry point for development of the technology but the application method can be applied to thousands of medications. The increased effectivness of drug delivery is a holy grail of the medical community. Not to mention the positive impact it would have on the lives of patients. It goes without saying that anyone prescribed a medication wants to be given the most effective treatment available, especially if it means that the amount of drug they must absorb is only 10% of a traditional dose.

As a current user of Chantix™, and happily not smoking because of it, I have to say this is about the dumbest thing since getting opium users to take heroin instead, so they stop smoking weird stuff in out of the way places...

"smaller amount larger kick." So like the difference between cocaine and crack then.
To make it worse one would assume that to work on something like this they should have someone versed in at least the basics of addiction medicine.
That brings up a term called "malice aforethought". These folks sound like a real piece of work.

But does it give the same feeling of alcohol induced self-destruction?

Whatever, let people do what they want. If they want a device that sends the nicotine straight to the dome, then let them. I don't think it's the red tape they'll have to worry about, it's big tobacco giving a reach around to the people applying said red tape.

Easier still, go to your local chemist, get some nicotine in its base form, put a drop in your contacts every morning, and voila, no more smoking!

I think this thing has greater potential than just nicotine, but in the case of smokers maybe it will develop into a step-down dosage that weans nicotine addicts.
