Extreme PS3 "stress test" garners praise from Sony
Clearly due to the current heat on Microsoft concerning the Xbox 360 RROD, disk scratching, and overheating scandals, Sony's Dave Karraker is mooning on the company's official blog over a recent PS3 Vault "stress test" called "How to kill a PS3 console" which showed the company's game system to be surprisingly resilient in the face of extreme conditions. "A lot of noise has been made recently about the reliability issues of one of our competitor's systems," Karraker said, then went on to kick some sand in Redmond's eye by adding "Did it fail? Nope. Like the Energizer Bunny, it kept going and going and going." Admittedly, the tests -- which included running games and Blu-ray movies for 108 hours in a typical "living room" environment, placing the console in a freezer van then lowering the temperature from 50 degrees to zero, and powering the PS3 in a sauna where heat increased from 100 degrees to 120 degrees over a nearly three-day session -- were quite extreme. In the end, however, the testers say besides being "extremely hot" after coming out of the sauna, the system is running fine and back in regular use. Microsoft, the ball's in your court.

Then why is it, the demo units at EB/ Gamestop keep freezing?
so you can get a life.
I've had mine lock up 4 times in 4 months. Twice while saving game progress and twice while playing the game. All 4 times it was the same title (Godfather: Don's Edition) so I'm not sure if it's the game or the console.
"so you can get a life."
Practice what you preach, idiot.
They freeze but are not crashed like RRoD 360s Mine has frozen maybe once or twice since November but I have always been able to reboot it just fine. The only reason they stay frozen in the demo stations is because the stores don't care enough to go reboot the system.
Sometimes, my PS2 freezes up, should I call Sony for repair?
These 7th gen systems are very very complicated machines. It's
surprising that they don't fail more often. The real question the
stress test was answering is: "will it survive?" not "will I be able
to play games in my sauna or walk-in freezer with no problems?"
Anyways, you're talking about the demo model... Expecting a demo to work perfectly after sitting in an enclosed space and/or being used non-stop, 7 days a week, is ridiculous. Ever noticed what kind of shape other demo's are in? Furniture with scuffs all over it, broken knobs, and so on.
If you look in the lower right hand corner of the screen theres a faded subliminal message that loads whenever it freezes and it reads "Buy your own dammit!"
Never had an issue with mine. The 360 is another story. For the part, the PS3 is a very solid (and powerful) machine. Great news.
But will it blend?
When are comments going to start getting old?
I think, in light of the PS3 stress testing, the better question is "Will it not blend?"
oh man, you beat me to it. its too bad they didnt do the ultimate test!
When you can put a whole game console into a Blendtec blender, then they can try it. In the meantime, about the only thing that'll fit in the carafe is a Wiimote and nunchuck. 360 and PS3 controllers can probably reach the blades of death at the bottom, too. But hey, maybe you can talk them into a DS or PSP?
So how about "Wii It Blend?" ;)
When will you blend. Dork.
PS3 FTW!!!!!11
Funny stuff, very good Sony. Now get back to work making some decent games.
agreed.
I have all three systems, and the PS3 is by far the highest quality piece of hardware. Now that I am done with Elder Scrolls, though, I don't play games on any of them - I just play WoW on my mac.
From now on, though, I will only buy 360 exclusives for the Xbox, anything that is out on both the Xbox and PS3 will be a PS3 buy (I bought Elder Scrolls before the PS3 came out). I know that my PS3 will last forever, and my xbox will eventually die (probably sooner than later) - plus the PS3 is just a much nicer system anyway.
Eric, i agree with you %100, well said. although i have heard PS4 is already in the works and due to come out in 2010... i hate to think i spent $600 on a system that's going to be replaced in 3 years, i can't afford $1000 for the next system
It is unlikely that the PS4 will come out before 2012 - the game industry runs on a 6 year product cycle. For one thing, PS3 consoles are sold at a loss, and I don't think that they will make a profit at all if they replace the consoles that soon (they need the hardware to drop in price, and they need a certain number of games sold per console).
If any system is replaced in 3 years it will be the Wii - which is fine because it is half price, so you end up paying the same replacing it twice as often.
Sure the PS3 is more reliable, but if you buy all multiplatform titles for the PS3 on that basis alone then you might end up with some inferior versions of games. I'm not saying it will always be that way, as it's very possible that developers are still struggling to learn how to code for it, but lately it's been that way, and personally I'd rather enjoy Madden 08 at 60fps instead of 30fps.
My friends own a Wii, a 360, and a PS3.
Of all three systems, they have replaced the 360 system a total of three times in 2006 to 2007 because of hardware failure. The 360 system they own now is about to be replaced again soon. Apparently it's refusing to recognize a fully charged wireless controller on-and-off. It is also starting to freeze and lock-up again after one hour of use.
Their PS3 which they bought at launch is still working. After the numerous updates, no problems whatsoever. It's managed to read slightly scratched and old PS2 disks without problems, and play DVD movies without a hitch. Their only two wishes right now that they want: 1, better DVD playback interface and 2, more games.
because you touch yourself at night ;)
I'm sorry, what?
sorry, the post system screwed up, this was supposed to be a reply to the first post
Very comic Sony, very comic. We collectively LOL'd at the the snarkyness of your antics. Now get back to work making some decent games !!! :P
oohh noooz teh double post !!! XO
I love how all the XBOT fanboys come in here and get all defensive about it..."Yeah, but...you still have bad games! haha!!11!!one" After Halo 3 what does XBOX have coming...nothing. XBOX is done...PS3 FTW!
Check out the sales before you make assumptions little boy.
Of course Sony would do their own "stress tests." Blow me Sony. Make some games already !
wait, what games does the PS3 have? there are NONE!!!!!! Christ, there's no "spin" or "bright-side" here, the fact is simple:
The PS3 has no good exclusive games. The 360 has several. simple.
man i don't even own or favor the xbox at all in any way. I just had to tell you, that you are the first person on here to mention xbox on this page beyond the article(and you came off doing it in a pretty infantile way).
I have a friend that owns a ps3 and has said to me "Its dope man, it really looks awesome.. i just wish there were more games out".. not to mention it can run linux(err sorta). I also have a friend with an xbox360 who said "I love all the games and the online community pwns but Oblivion keeps locking up on me"(I believe he was having psu issues). So my point.. just because someone wants more games it doesn't mean they are a fanboy for the competitor, it's just a legitimate request. I don't personally plan on buying a hd console(i own a wii) for a while still.. but in all honesty, im gonna buy the one that has the games i want to play, regardless of whats other bells and whistles it may have. I don't want a kitchen sink box, I want a gaming console.
I love these types of posts.
- Waaaaaa! Why do you have to be mean to my PS3?
- Waaaaaa! Why do you have to hate on the iPhone?
- Waaaaaa! But the Apple TV is not in the same market as media center, so don't compare them.
But then, in every article about anything from Microsoft, we see dozens of posts containing made up, anecdotal, numbers like 33%, or comments like "you mean two people actually bought that turd brown zune?", etc. etc. etc. Hell, even this article is baiting 360 owners. Why did it need to mention anything about the 360 at all? Let the PS3 stand on its own merits.
In other words, if you don't like it, tough. If you want it to stop, then try getting your fellow PS3 fanboys to do the same.
The temperatures in a sauna are not hot enough compared to the temperature levels that cause errors in the xbox 360 console. Furthermore, the comments regarding games is correct. For example, the Sega Dreamcast was an extremely well built console and very technologically advanced in its day, yet it ultimately failed largely in part to a poor game catalog. Whether or not the PS3 is more technologically advanced and durable to stress is irrelevant in the eyes of the market and consumers if there are no games for people to feel a need to buy the system.
Dreamcast had a poor game catalog? That is just plain wrong. Go learn about the dreamcast before comparing it to the PS3.
I don't think the claim is that the sauna temperatures are as hot as the internals of a running 360. Rather, in hotter conditions, the cooling system of a machine is less effective. Clearly, drawing cold air into a hot machine will cool things down, but drawing hot air in will be far less efficient at cooling, possibly even not enough to keep the machine at an operable temperature.
We have seen (many of us personally) that the pre-cooling-upgrade 360 has a tough time keeping things cool enough even in typical living room conditions. The point stands that, if a machine can work for three straight days in sauna conditions, it can certainly handle running for a few hours at a time in a 75-degree F living room.
I would hardly say that durability is irrelevant - unless the backlash from the ring of death issues constitutes user apathy. True, a strong software catalog is a very important part of a good system, but many still argue that dreamcast had superior software to the N64. Sega had a long history of comparative failures from a strict profitability standpoint - the SMS made less than the NES. The Game Gear never caught on like the GameBoy Color. The Genesis never did as well as the SNES, and so forth. The one consistent point on all of those failures was that they reached the market first, and I don't think anybody wants to take that analogy too far.
As for myself, neither system has anything in their catalog that I'm remotely interested in. UT3 is the only game that might possibly convince me to pick up a PS3, and that all depends on how much it will be to upgrade my PC to a comparable level at release. If it's a close enough price I might get the PS3 for the included BluRay.
The dreamcast didn't die due to a bad game catalog, the prelaunch-hype of the PS2, combined with the PS2s dvd player, killed it.
What are you smoking, dude? The Dreamcast had lots of awesome games. The PS2 killed the Dreamcast, pure and simple. And it's unfortunate, because I still like that system. I think it died before its time.
But is it fun?
I love how every PS3 fan is all "After Halo 3 XBOX will have nothing"... but GTAIV, Assassin's Creed, Gears of War, etc....
and need we bring up the framerate issues with Madden 2008 on the PS3 and how smoothly it runs on the 360.
Anyways, I am extremely impressed with the survival of the PS3. Sony is a hardware company, that is what they do, MS is a software company, that is what they do... if only MS did the software for the PS3. Then we would have a reliable system with worthwhile games.
Hmm....how reliable would the PS3 be with Microsoft software?...hmmm....not sure I want the BSOD on my game console...
If a company could be a person, Microsoft would be labeled a douchebag.
Some people think you really can do anything you want if you have enough money. The world just doesn't work that way all the time. Often times, it takes brains to accomplish a given task. Poor Microsoft; all that money, but mediocre to the end.
:-)
Gian
Don't forget Bioshock even before Halo 3..... That's gonna pwn.
Okaayy... so now MS is a douchebag... so in comparison Sony is a lying douchebag... with a stutter... WTH dude?
Assassin's Creed and GTA4 are both coming out on the PS3, also, so all the 360 has is Gears of War....
BioShock, Mass Effect, Alan Wake, Halo 3, Ace Combat 06, TimeShift, Fable 2, Project Gotham Racing 4, Stuntman: Ignition, Sega Rally Evo, and Halo Wars (not really looking forward to it, but its going to be solid non-the-less).
Not to mention the games we already have (even before the release of the PS3 versions if there are any) DiRT, Forza Motorsport 2 (rapes GTHD, GT5, and GT in general in every way possible), Gears of War, Test Drive Unlimited (may be old, and may be on multiple systems, but it isn't on the PS3, and has the best online community of all the platforms, not to mention the most downloads and is a very original and fun driving game), Command and Conquer 3, Crackdown, Dead Rising, Quake 4, the better versions of CoD3 and Oblivion, Call of Duty 2 (the best version, too), Prey, and the shitloads of amazing arcade games. When Quake 3 Arena is released on XBLA, the shit has hit the fan for the PS3- Hell, in all practical views, it already has.
@ Zeus ^ ^
Oh dear oh dear oh dear......that post of yours has totally blown you away.
You are indeed the biggest fanboy that posts on this site.
Let's face it, both Playstation 3 and XBox360 have amazing exclusives. Granted, XBox 360 has more at the moment due to it being out longer (is'nt that obvious?), but both have fantastic games in the pipeline. If you can't accept that then I feel sorry for you.....actually, no I don't. :-)
I think people are forgetting how sad the 360's launch titles were at first, so let's not be too hasty to judge the PS3 yet, especially since it was only officially launched in some countries not too long ago. The PS2 has like the largest catalogue of games, and you can expect the same with the PS3.
There may not be that many blockbuster PS3 exclusives announced now, but I actually prefer the lower profile exclusives that creep in to surprise us all, like Okami and Ico/Shadow of the Colossus. Sony also has more Japanese developers making quirky games for the local market that might sometimes make its way to the US, like Shin Megami Tensei. This is why I'm not losing sleep over the PS3 right now, because it's only a matter of time before the avalanche comes. And once developers get the hang of developing for the Cell, the graphics and gameplay will improve dramatically, ala the PS2 and the Emotion Engine.
Sorry Phil, but I'm not a fanboy, and the fact that the 360 has been out longer is really Sony's fault. Had they gotten on the ball and played it smart (conventional and more powerful hardware) they would have had a competitive machine, and wouldn't be having nearly as many issues with moving consoles (conventional hardware is cheaper) or having quality games. Its all Sony's fault- they screwed themselves over, and its hurting. Thats not saying its a bad system- its a good system, its just that if it wasn't so hard to program for, you would be seeing better games. This is another point where conventional hardware shines... Its NOT a bitch to program for. Its more the hardware thats leading the horrible lineup of games, not the amount of time the consoles have been out.
The fact still remains, the 360's lineup is killing the PS3's.
@ Max Fun:
-Call of Duty 2
-Condemned: Criminal Origins
-GUN
-Quake 4
-Need For Speed: Most Wanted
-Project Gotham Racing 3
Thats hardly a "sad," especially when new games where quickly put out on the market 1-2 months afterwards... Oh, and lets not forget all the major sports titles that were released.
Oh, and that launch lineup is much more than you can say for the PS3 even 10 MONTHS after the launch, and the upcoming games don't look very good other than Rachet and Clank (loved that game).
@Zeus
How can you defend Microsoft rushing of the Xbox360 to the market and say Sony should have released the PS3 sooner. Isn't 33% enough to see that it was a bad idea to rush the hardware production. Trust me, I'm upset I had to slap down another $$$ on an out of warranty Xbox360. Then I bought a cooling fan because of fear of it RROD'ing again. The 360 came out more expensive than the PS3 because of failures. It hurt Sony to wait to release the PS3 in terms of release of games but I can sit and wait a few more months for the Japanese developers to roll in the good games.
Let it be known that I am Andrew/Roundeye as well (OP)...and no I am not sure why!
@ Phil
Calling someone (Zeus) a fanboy because they can name a few games is just plain immature. All he was doing was pointing out that there are quite a few games on the 360 that are good. Some of which are now available on the PS3. Yes, the 360 has been out longer, yes that means that there are more games for it (200+) titles, but it is also easier to program for... which means it is less expensive for developers to program for. Developers are not fanboys, they cannot afford to be, it is a business. So they develop for a system that can do what they need it to do, including and foremost, make them money! That is why many formerly 'Sony exclusive' titles are being developed and released for the 360.. fact of big business. Microsoft had the opportunity to make a move and they did, Sony has yet to successfully respond to it. Reluctently though I have to agree that both systems have a nice lineup coming out and yes there are some good looking PS3 exclusives.
@ Zeus
I see and understand your argument, but 360 launching before PS3 was not really Sonys fault, it was a gutsy move by MS. They are paying for it now though, with the warrantee extension and massive repair bills... but they are showing profit in their gaming division overall, so I guess the gamble did pay (just not as much as they hoped in the beginning). Other than that, you make some valid points.
@ Shortfuse
I understand your woes, I am on 360 #3 right now. But neither of mine have been RROD, they have just been general freezing of the system. I fortunately have not had to put any money into it though, because my replacements were covered under Manufacturers Warrantee. I think that the Japanese games will be outstanding for the PS3...in Japan. I honestly believe that we will only see a small percentage of them make it to international distribution because of the small target market for that general style of game.
@ everyone... :)
When it all comes down to it, I have yet to hear of a groundbreaking multiplayer (online) experience for the PS3. Multiplayer online is one of the largest growth reasons for the boom in console gaming over the past few years. XBox LIVE was a groundbreaking success in the industry, until Sony can truly rival it (SONY HOME just isn't quite all that yet), I think MS. That is the unfortunate truth! Also, the cost of the Blue Ray player in the PS3 is what is truly driving the price of the console right now, and since there are no system selling killer apps, it is the only true selling point of the system (as of today). Unfortunatel, Sony may have shot itself in the foot by devoting so much to the Blue Ray format (which I admit has a slight edge over HD DVD), and may just lose this format war... just like it lose the BETAMAX/VHS war (because the Sony Beta format was ten times better than VHS, they just screwed up their strategy).
@ RoundeyeSamura,
Nevermind Phil... obviously, you don't know Zeus; if you do, and stand behind that statement, I'm sorry ;-) I could post links all day of this misbehaving (and often illogical) miscreant. Here's just the latest, and the tip of the iceberg.
http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/11/sony-erects-massive-ps3-server-cluster-for-warhawk-mayhem/2#commentform
His obsessive troll like posts on the gaming section are akin to a OCD addict that has invested their life savings to MSFT, that is until the PS3 gets some HOT exclusive titles (by his own admission); at which point, he'll make derogatory anti-360 comments on every Xbox360 story. You see... this is the life of a troll.
@ chad
Thanks... and to think, many think trolls are only in fairy tales. Who knew? LOL
guys don't u get that ms doesnt care about its customers? xbox came out a year after ps2 and 360 came out a year b4 ps3. whats that say? and not 2 shit on halo (halo 2 was awesome) but after gears halo 3 is gonna suck, gears is the only good 360 game. bioshock is gay judging from the demo, n if u wanna talk online play, warhawks gonna bring psn into the light. n 4 the kicker? sony is in talk w/ epic 2 have them release gears 2 on both systems. kinda revenge 4 ms getting dmc4, hurts doesnt it?
@ FerrariDave
1) Microsoft actually does take care of its customers, at least in my experience. In fact I am not sure how the release of xbox vs ps2 and ps3 vs 360 have anything to do with them caring/notcaring about their customers.
2) Comparing Gears to Halo 3 is like comparing an apple to a baseball. Sure you can throw both, but they are still two entirely different things. The genre alone is completely different. One is a FPS (first person shooter)... one is a TPS (Third Person Shooter). One is set to play in confined, play limited, venues... one is set on large scale more open venues. One plays more as a slower paced, tactical action game... one plays more as a run-and-gun action game. If you are going to compare them, pick a facet to focus on, like graphics, size of levels, gameplay, framerate, AA, AI, shaders, friggin jaggy edges, soundtrack,...something. Because if you can't back up your argument...don't friggin argue.
3) I love both games, so I am not a hater!
4) Learn to form proper sentences!
Cheers.
Just don't try to play Madden 08 on it ;)
http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/08/14/call-of-duty-4-on-the-ps3-run-at-60fps-with-full-aa/
It's not that the PS3 couldn't do it. EA was just lazy with it.
No doubt that someone can get a game to run at 60FPS on a console. You fail to realize that the engines are different, and EA is new to the whole "actually programming for the PS3" thing. Not to mention their engine could be having issues with the way the Cell works. Its not necessarily a matter of them being lazy, but more just Sony putting in hardware that no one can make use of.
u do realize that this is the first time on the 360 that madden is running at 60fps right?
Surely you must
Totally had to have known that
Not to fuel any fanboy wars... but one 360 did survive a car crash.
http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/17/xbox-360-survives-multi-roll-car-crash-keeps-churning/
WTF???????????
In a related story, the above poster dresses up his PS3 like a maid and does dirty things to it at night... he's contributing to Sony's "sticky liquid" stress test...
Good for Hideki Kojima the garbage collector.
As for the famed HIDEO Kojima, the director for the Metal Gear Solid series, he really has nothing to do with this story. Brilliant man nonetheless.
I am not even a fanboy, I just wanted to point out some ... ah forget it.
But nice find on the car crash!
Amen. PS3 is boring.
I agree. I'm not a Sony fanboy or anything, but I will be now. I had an XBOX360 that was running fine but one day, I decided to play a game while downloading something from Live in the background... and that's when it suddenly crashed and the ring of death appeared. I called Microsoft (in India) and they refused to repair it without me paying like $100. So I just sold my XBOX for like $70 on eBay.
Since I've had my PS3, nothing has been going wrong... even when I was playing non-stop for 10 hours one day 'cause I just got Resistance. That was the day I found out I accidentally covered the air vent in the back by some DVDs and it was EXTREMELY hot and burning up, yet, it still ran fine.
SONY FTW.
Most games stop the downloading process when loaded/inserted on/in a 360... However, I'm sure you've clocked a lot more gaming hours on your 360 than you ever will your PS3, considering it has no games. And, if once you actually start to play it, and it blue screens/red rings/does wtfe, then it'll probably cost $100+ to repair it. Companies exist to make money, and MS isn't the only one. I'm sure this will follow with inane comments such as "the PS3 is infallible!!1!!11!"
And, yes, I have both consoles.
walmart had ps3s instock last time i went... but i realized.. no games!
Oh Yeah!!! Well I got a ROCK with can stand temperatures over 1000 degrees Celsius. Just as useful as the PS3 IMO.
I hate you biased people and fanboys. Both Xbox and PS3 have a great lineup this year, so stop complaining and just PLAY YOUR CONSOLES. Off the top of my head:
PS3:Heavenly Sword, Lair, Warhawk, SingStar, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Haze, and UT3 out this year.
Xbox: Halo 3, Bioshock, (Is Fable 2 out before years end?), Blue Dragon, Beautiful Katamari, and Mass Effect.
So stop the wars already.
I am not a PS3 fanboy. I have been playing videogames since before most of you were born (all hail SpacePort). I play what I want, on whatever platform I deem interesting or fun (e.g. If I want to play Mario Galaxy when it comes out, I'll get Wii). But when I finish playing 360 games (Say Lost Planet or Gears Of War), and log in some time with my PS3, its like going from a Prius to a C6 Corvette! Yeah, it costs more, but you get performance.
More like a steam powered locomotive to an electric bullet train. My 360 is darn loud. I would say these test results are par for consoles and nothing special. It is the 360 that is currently not quite up to standards.
Hmmm... I take it all of those degrees were Fahrenheit?
The post says that the tests were done "over a nearly three day session". 108 hours is 4.5 days...
games aside, it would appear that the ps3 has the same rugged advantage over the xbox 360 that the ps2 had over the xbox, because personally, i went through three xboxs from the sort of moderate use folks give an xbox (thankfully only paid for one+ an extended warrenty), whereas my ps2 toke all of those can't-save-right-now-boss-battle-rpg three day runs like a pro over the six years i've owned it.
The thinkpad of consoles?
Yup, and the PS2 had quite a few problems- most of which had to do with the lasers going out of sync causing the disc read errors, and just random freezing/shutting down and overheating.
Count yourself lucky with your PS2, or maybe you bought one of the later revisions. My launch unit died from the typical DVD drive issues (could no longer read game disks)....I like the PS2 so much though that I went out last year (about 6 months after getting my 360) and picked up a PS2 slim.
Of course, if Sony had made a compelling argument for why I need a 360 AND a PS3 I would have gone that route. They haven't made that case to me yet, not by a long shot.
Precisely my thoughts. M$ boxes are simply built rather cheaply, whereas both my PS2 and PS3 have held up like *champs* (the PS2 for many years) under heavy usage.
Fuel for fanboys war... that's what I though when I first read about this.
Can I give my non-fanboy comment?
Here: Mighty fine if a PS3 survive all those tests... but you can't judge ALL PS3 by testing one. It does proves that Sony made a durable and solid job on that one though.
Also, remembering: Standing up to one quick extreme testing is one thing. Stress testing goes way beyond that.
To make a stress test you'll need to break the console. Stress testing means you will put the console on several harsh situations that might break it... until it does.
But yeah, this is obviously to draw attention and compare consoles durability, which is pretty effective given the failure rate from XBox 360. Problem is, it's not Sony that is great here... it's Microsoft that sucks.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Microsoft hater. I'm on Windows XP here, and this has been the best OS I ever used so far, having already used Linux and MacOS.
But Microsoft should've learned by now that overheating problems ARE NOT AN OPTION for console systems. It's unacceptable, and it's slow response to it was even worse.
They deserved all the crap they are eating now. And might as well stop making console systems if they can't handle overheating problems.
But yeah, I've seen great games for XBox 360.... even some who made me want to buy one.
Thing is: I'll never buy a console if I have to worry about it crashing, overheating, having to call tech support, send the thing back, wait for it to be fixed, etc etc etc.
This is exactly why portable systems are ruling the console market today: They are cheap, easy to use, and if you take good care of it, it won't just break out of nowhere. They way notebooks, PCs, and full consoles should also be.
The 36o fanboys can keep their 'console exclusives' - by the sounds of things you can't play them for long anyway.
I'm off to get a PS3 (from Asia - $400 less than what I would pay in a store here in New Zealand).
Make sure that it's actually a "Sony PlayStation 3" not a "Snoy pLaysTation 3" or we might have another "keepin' it real fake" on our hands.
"its like going from a Prius to a C6 Corvette! Yeah, it costs more, but you get performance."
Word??
Yeah... A Prius (360)... Great on gas Runs good, has Great mileage.
Hmm.. A Corvette (PS3)... BAD on gas, Runs great, has low mileage AND it can go 100+ easy, but you can only go just as fast as the Prius or risk getting a ticket or worse, loosing your life.
Gimmie the Prius.
Are you implying the X360 runs well?! With the huge fail rates and massive warranty dollars M$ is spending trying to keep all of their ailing boxes healthy? Comparing the prius to the X360 was a poor simile.
Its a tad ironic that he compares the PS3 reliability to that of the batteries from another company. Wouldn't want to compare it with, oh, say, a SONY battery now would we?
"It is unlikely that the PS4 will come out before 2012 - the game industry runs on a 6 year product cycle. For one thing, PS3 consoles are sold at a loss, and I don't think that they will make a profit at all if they replace the consoles that soon (they need the hardware to drop in price, and they need a certain number of games sold per console)."
Not exactly. Sony is on a 6 year cycle. Nintendo is on a 5 year cycle and MS is on a 4 year cycle. This is by looking @ the trends of the time between their console launches. Add into the fact that even though Sony has released a console 6 years after it's last, the predecessors continued to sell for 3-4 years very strongly. The PS1 did it and the PS2 is on pace to do the exact same.
i have an snes, its been moved around, collecting dust from the beginning of time, dropped, soda spilled on it, thrown against the wall and yet still work fine with all the great games i have so sony lil stress test and basically the halobox can go cry to their mommy and suck on their bottle for their failure
What makes you think Xbox 360 is killing the PS3?
Do you not know the sales figures?
Oh no, are you just speaking information out of your ass?
Dammit, I thought you were a little bit more credible for a minute there, totally fooled me. Good one!
Because it's a grill in disguise.
but can it play Doom?
the answer is of course no since sony failed in that department.
Personally I follow games not consoles. No offense to fanboys but, being loyal to a specific console these days doesn't really make sense. Bottom-line, find the games you want to play and buy the system that let's you play them. Everything else is just colored bubbles...
It makes sense if you're on a budget.
I'd like to point out that your summary conveniently hides the temperature units that seem to be fahrenheits. Though real saunas are in 100-120 degree CELSIUS range, and was quite impressed at first.
yeah, 100 degrees celsius. oh yeah, except that would boil you!
I like bubbles
Seriously, if you consider yourself a gamer passing up on the 360 this gen because it may, just may, at some point fail....you are doing your hobby a big disservice.
For one, the failure hit about 30% of the old unit designs (the motherboard has been updated with improved cooling and newer 65nm chips are coming out very soon) typically manifest itself in failure after about a year of use (thats why the 1 year warranty was extended).
Typically, the repair takes up to 2 weeks including shipping. Repair is free and repairs that were paid for are being reimbursed.
Seriously, avoiding the 360 just in case it fails is a bit much. Console choice should always follow the games. Its just an entertainment device after all, not some life support system.
I have a PS2 which has been used and abused for more than six years, and that thing has never had a problem so I have no doubts Sony can build an excellant machine. I love Sony and the PS2 was IMHO the greatest( and may go down in history as the greatest) video console ever made. That being said I am not a 'fanboy' and have no loyality to any system. I made a tough decision about a month ago purchasing the XBOX 360 over the PS3. Though hardware failures are a concern to me, I know people who haven't had a problem with the system, and of course I know some people who have had major issues. That being said I still went with the XBOX despite all of the 'talk' on the internet. I do believe there are legitatmate problems, but I learned hard and fast that the internet tends to be a megaphone for negative talk and some things are overblown (please don't feel I am discounting issues here that need to be addressed). The biggest caveats about the XBOX are the fact that you do have to purchase items suchs as the HD-DVD player and WiFi accessories seperate, so I do consider the PS3 an excellant bargain, that being said several months of research provided me with enough knowledge to look past the hardware issues/price and focus on the selection and quality of content which IMO the XBOX has a better market for (both now and in the future). Only time will tell if the XBOX 360 proves reliable for me, the extended warranty does give me some peace-of-mind and I don't seem to encounter the problems that other people have with purchases, but you just never know. Recent titles showing the advantages of the XBOX 360 hardware only reaffirms my initial research, that the system is just 'more capable' - though I do not discount the possibilities that the PS3 just needs to 'catch-up'. The other thing worth noting is that the navigation system and media center capabilities of the XBOX are just remarkable, probably the first time I have ever been impressed with a Microsoft Interface, I consider my investment in the XBOX worthwhile as it doubles as an ultra fast media center and works like a charm with other pcs on my network without any tooling around - of course I recognize the PS3 has similar features as well, but my hats are still off to Microsoft. It's possible one day in the future I would purchased a PS3 too, afterall they do have some wonderful franchise titles and I already own a PSP, DS, and Wii so my 'gaming collection' is quite broad, but that being said the XBOX 360 is simply put 'fantastic'.

PS3 has no games? Really now. Anyone spouting that nonsense is either a raging 360 fanboy or totally ignorant, and in most cases both.

40+ titles already out, with another 40+ titles scheduled to be out by the end of 2007. 2008 is looking even better. How many fscking games can you play for chrissakes?
I have both consoles and the 360 has greater quantity of good games but is waaay less reliable. ps3 is starting to catch up with games but ever so slow and currently the ps network is inferior to xbox live... but that will change soon with the release of HOME. We should also not forget that the ps3 is gonna be the 1st to offer mouse support in game to try to bridge the HUGE gap between console and PC gamers. both consoles rock, simply put. If you gotta 360 just try to let it breath and you may never see the RROD.
besides if you're a real gamer ya get all systems ;)
BAH! I have both the 360 and PS3. Both launch consoles both working great. Sony, tell me less of how my PS3 can play well under subzero temperatures ( Yay now we know Eskimo's can play PS3 games ) and tell me why most of the multi-platform games have frame rate problems and have an outdated graphics card. And damn it I'm a Sony fan first and I have to play 360 to get the full experience non exclusive games. Not kosher.
I only have a wii right now and I am definately gonna get the PS3 over the 360. I even prefer the Wii over the 360. I got the wii cuz i wanted to experience a whole new creative way of gaming instead of the same old style. now that I look at new titles that are comin out, I really wanna get a PS3 cuz it came out alot later than the 360 meaning that they took their time to perfect it rather than being childish about it and racing and rushing to beat the other systems. for more creative gameplay its gotta be the ps3 also cuz it has the six axis in the controllers.
this experiment needs to be an advertisement. a 360 and a ps3 going through stress tests. the xbox in a normal vcr cubbyhole under the tv melting down in 4 hours, the ps3 gliding through a sauna with no adverse effects. it would be beautiful.
