DivX sez 100 million certified video devices have been shipped
Moving 100 million of anything is no easy feat, and DivX is using this very milestone to throw itself a party. Reportedly, over 100 million DivX Certified video devices have shipped out "since the launch of the DivX Certification program in 2003," and it notes alliances with LG, Philips, Samsung, Sony, and Thomson (what, no SanDisk?) as key steps along the way. More specifically, over 2,500 individual product models have been loosed that support DivX playback, and the company estimates that around "32-percent of all DVD players sold worldwide support DivX." Way to go, now how's about unleashing that Connected box of yours to the masses?[Via PhotographyBlog]

I wish 360 supported DivX. I would even buy it on live marketplace ;(
Just release the codec :(

I'm very happy that Apple has coerced (forced?) me into using h.264 for all my DVD rips... they play nice on the xbox and are a little bit smaller in size (with the same quality).. screw divx

I doubt they'd license it, Panther_V. Added cost plus it would help kill their Windows Media interests. They have far grander plans for their formats.
Microsoft Zune:
Same deal; transcoding from other formats to theirs, to only play back their video format on their hardware, handily avoiding licensing fees for competing formats.
And of course not being interested in various open-source formats in their hardware, which would hurt them again.
Microsoft ultimately wants the content industries on their codecs. The rewards are too great for them (royalties on licensed hardware, royalties on every piece of content, etc)

H.264 is world superior to Divx, just due to the compatibility of it. I mean an H.264 file will play on pretty much most major devices, iPhone, iPods, Xbox 360, PSP, PS3, etc with little to no fiddling. Sorry, standards based formats FTW.
nxtiak @ Aug 16th 2007 10:27PM
Ya, playing divx/xvid and other files is a pain in the ass to play on the 360

You are all missing the point. Pretty much all scene movies, tv shows, etc are released in DivX/XviD. If you're downloading video off a torrent site, chances are more than likely its encoded in DivX/XviD. Now if you're only watching videos you own in DVD, this isn't a big deal. You can rip and encode your videos in whatever codec you want. But for the rest of us pirates, we want native DivX/XviD support! Arrrgh!
(I know this isn't DivX, Inc.'s motivation, but its the real reason anyone would really want DivX support in any device.)

So true. It'd make it so much easier for pirates, which I think is possibly the reason why they AREN'T doing it.
I'd definitely buy that Connected product though. Throw on a HDMI output and I'm fixed. But it better not just support DivX. If it supports all major formats and is under $200-300, it will have great acclamation.

If I want to play videos on my XBOX 360 - or upload them for that matter...what's the easiest way to make the DVD-r's?
Teve Torbes @ Aug 16th 2007 10:49PM
And transcoding doesn't count. It just further degrades the quality and is a resource hog on the host computer. Are you listening Microsoft & Divx, Inc.?
Duscrom @ Aug 17th 2007 6:18AM
Yay for supporting an aging codec that is only useful to pirates! As said before h.264 is superior, and has much better compatibility with Xbox 360/PS3/AppleTV
Blakamin @ Aug 17th 2007 7:53AM
YAY!!
Joe Terranella @ Aug 17th 2007 2:08AM
I was really surprised and pleased to see the Divx Logo on my DVD player when I purchased it. Works great too!
sukatoro @ Aug 17th 2007 2:08AM
yet more spew from the projectmayo snake oil salesmen... who are of course still trying to convince their investors that h.264 and .Wmv aren't an actual threat due to their "presence" in the piracy arena. btw, embedding your codec into hardware to facilitate piracy in foreign markets isn't anything to really be bragging about guys..

Movie piracy FTW!
Blakamin @ Aug 17th 2007 2:46AM
I'm on my second stand-alone DivX DVD player... Wouldn't buy another DVD player unless it had DivX
DG @ Aug 17th 2007 12:07PM
My DivX-supporting DVD player is great. Six 700MB movies on a DVD-R is an awesome deal.
