Samsung announces F8 LCD lineup at IFA
Among many other things, Samsung has unveiled its F8 series of oh-so-sexy LCDs at IFA in Berlin. Focusing on the LE46F86BD in particular, this display touts 100MHz Motion Plus technology to sharpen up those images, 1080p support, a baffling 25,000:1 contrast ratio, and a superCLEAR panel coating to boot. Furthermore, you'll find a USB 2.0 port, a trio of HDMI 1.3 sockets, an eight-millisecond response time, and CCFL backlighting. Notably, this set looks awfully similar to the 71 / 81-series that Sammy loosed last month, so the possibility of a name change to suit different markets could be the case here -- nevertheless, we'll keep an eye out for pricing and availability details.

Price? Size?

Going by the model number, I'm going to say 46" ;)
And it's funny... I don't remember submitting this story... O.o

Looks pretty sexy. And a 25,000:1 contrast ratio ain't so bad either. Still kinda dissapointed that they have 8ms response times when the Sharp Aquos LCD's have 4ms......

No 120Hz? No deal... Though the HDMI 1.3 and 25,000:1 contrast is pretty nice...
fistpittingnork @ Aug 16th 2007 4:19PM
True, nice LCD specs there, but like "hothotdisco" pointed out, 8ms response time? That's SO 2004, Samsung!

its 100Hz because its the PAL Model and PAL is 25FPS, while NTSC is 30FPS. 25*4=100 30*4=120.
And FYI PAL is Superior to NTSC, while it may not win in resolution now that HDTV res's are the same for PAL and NTSC, it does win out due to the fact that you can play progressive content over interlaced PAL. IE, Movies on PAL 1080i TV Channels are actually 1080p. This is due to the fact that the original 24fps film is either sped up to 25fps (making the movie 3% shorter) or an extra frame is made from 2 blended frames. Eitherway, it allows progrssive content to be played over even 576i channels (and it is).

I believe this is the aforementioned 71-series with European nomenclature.

Ugh, I really don't like this trend towards glossy LCDs. Although it does improve contrast you have to watch in a black hole to avoid reflections. Hopefully they'll offer it in matte like the 4X61F series.
Jason Gulledge @ Aug 16th 2007 4:56PM
Word is they'll be going for around $4,300 for the 46" version.
Matt Baron @ Aug 16th 2007 5:11PM
Sounds kinda pricey if this is really the European 71 series
Jason Gulledge @ Aug 16th 2007 5:27PM
Actually I've heard conflicting reports. I found another source saying it was around $2,800. I hope that's correct.

what is the USB connection for? If it can't access mp3's *and* DVD files from that, then there's no point to it.

100Hz, not a multiple of 30, 60 or 24, what's the point?
Gregor @ Aug 16th 2007 7:41PM
That would be a multiple of 50... for PAL.

This maybe A PAL version where PAL is 50Hz although there is a PAL 60 called PAL M and (current PAL TV's do 100Hz) and NTSC operates at 60HZ,(really 59.94Hz), therefore 100Hz vs 120Hz.

The F9 is the Euro 81 series, while the F8 is the Euro 71 Series

The F8 series should be arrive on the market by September in both 40" and 46" versions for a price of €3,199.00 (LE-46F86BD) and €2,599.00 (LE-40F86BD). It is not yet clear whether 37" and 52" versions will also be available.
Also look out for the new F9 serie. The unbelievably high dynamic contrast ratio of 500,000 to 1, just as promised in the marketing literature, rings in a new era of LCD technology. A new backlighting method based on LEDs with local dimming makes this incredible ratio possible, and Samsung/'s new F9 series will introduce this new technology. The F9 has already been introduced in the U.S. under the name "81" and is available there in four sizes and MSRPs: 40" for $3,000.00, 46" for $4,000.00, 52" for $5,000.00, and 57" for $7,000.00. It's likely that these models will find their way into Germany. A 70" model will be produced as a subseries of its own intended for professional use, with an MSRP currently estimated at over €10,000.00.

Anyone have any opinions on how this models compares with the samsung LE46M86BDX model? I've noticed the 100Hz spec and 25,000:1 contrast ratio (as opposed to 15,000:1 on the LE46M86BDX model), but is there really much there worth the extra hundreds of $? Also...the M86 series brags their "true black" technology, which is of great interest to me...does this technology apply to the F86 series?
