Sony today announced intentions to begin a national recycling program for your various unwanted or unloved electronics, imaginatively called the "Sony Take Back Recycling Program," which will begin on September 15th with 75 "eCycling" points around the country. The electronics manufacturer has partnered with Waste Management as part of the trash hauler's "Recycle America" program, and says that it hopes to grow its drop-off locations to 150 by year's end, with a spot in every state. 1.5 to 1.9 million tons of electronic waste went into landfills in 2005, and Sony hopes to curb those numbers by offering "end-of-life solutions," for products they produce. The company will also accept recyclables from other manufacturers for a fee, proving once again that Sony is only in it for the money. Just kidding.

Will they take my RRoD xBox360?
Stefan @ Aug 16th 2007 5:48PM
Actually, they probably *are* in it for the money. Recycling electronic gear is big money these days.

Will they take a PS3?
kuzu-b @ Aug 16th 2007 5:55PM
Gotta do something with all the broke PS2's lying around. Man that console had technical issues almost as bad as 360. DRE = 3ROD
Those would be great rapping names, DRE and 3ROD in da house! 3 rings of death even sounds wu-tang like, not too sure about disc read error, but DRE worked for the doctor, it can work for you.

Great! They have a whole lot of useless Betamax, Mini disc, Atrac-only players and dangerous laptop batteries to recycle.
Now the question is: Will they all blend?

Great choice of pictures!

*looks around hastily*...Aw...I don't even own anything Sony, why can't I be a convenient hippie too?!
kobayashi @ Aug 16th 2007 6:34PM
I for one think it's good news. Be it for the money or be it not for the money, it wil l mean less trash.
fireryone @ Aug 16th 2007 7:46PM
They should go worldwide :)
---And--- offer you a few bucks for your scrap.
since they will find a way of making something (money) from it.
charonzen @ Aug 16th 2007 8:02PM
Not only will they make money from this from the actual recycling process, I'm almost certain that there has to be some sort of tax shelter involved in this as well. I call greenwash shenanigans.
Tim @ Aug 16th 2007 8:23PM
I tend to believe with kobayashi. Even if this is for the money, it's a good thing.

"The company will also accept recyclables from other manufacturers for a fee"
Aren't there already a lot of places where you can drop this stuff off for free? I know that there are periodic ones near my house, and I would imagine that if you knew where to go you could do this anytime.
I just dont really see the point.
jimmyfinch @ Aug 16th 2007 9:20PM
Who actually does the recycling.
I bet they sell it off in bulk to "companies" in places like India to "recycle".
The good stuff gets stripped and the rest becomes a carcinogenic nightmare.

I've got an old R2 unit laying around and I can't find a Jawa to save my life. Will Sony take it? Maybe they could give it to Aibo as a friend.
Jay @ Aug 17th 2007 6:12PM
If Sony found a cure for cancer and handed it over to the UN gratis you'd still all bitch like hell about them.
And if Apple or Nintendo caused cancer in kids you'd find something positive to say about it.
I'm getting sick of all the fanboyism in these "blogs".
