Sprint's XOHM WiMAX service gets official
The Xohm website is now hot, making yesterday's rumor pretty incontestable at this point. Although seeing a press release would really seal the deal. The teaser site simply states that Xohm is coming in the Spring of 2008 and promises to "expand the internet experience" to a new class of internet enabled devices. Update: Ah ha! As reader Deluxe points out, it's pronounced "Zome" as in Rome. Had to bust out Firefox since the audio won't play in Safari.
Update 2: The Press release is out. The "end of 2007" soft launch is still expected for Chicago and Baltimore / D.C. markets. Lucky you, John Waters.

Actually Sprint has been "touting", as you say, spring 2008 all along. By year-end 2007 is for the test markets, not the nationwide release.

Empower MP3's? Idiots.

When you go to the Xohm website, the announcer pronounces it. It's "ZOME."
Deluxe @ Aug 16th 2007 3:13AM
If you had your speakers on when viewing the site, you'd hear that it's pronounced
"Zome" (as in 'Rome' without the R and more Z)
Chicksta @ Aug 16th 2007 9:36AM
Wouldn't it be more like Xohm as in 'roam'?

I have a question, how much is it going to cost to get a cell phone with WiMax tech. Because I'm willing to go up to $70 with contract to get myself one of these.
Anyway, finally! Sprint is actually doing something interesting compared to the other competitors. I finally feel good to be a Sprint customer.

The 2008 date seems to be for their big rollout - I think as you posted earlier, they are still claiming an end of year 2007 rollout for limited market:
The company plans WiMAX test service in the Chicago, Baltimore and Washington DC areas by year-end 2007. Commercial service is expected to be available in a number of markets starting April 2008 and cover 100 million people by year-end 2008 in conjunction with a planned partnership with Clearwire.

What about us poor bastards who still don't have Power Vision service?

Sprint is continuing to expand EVDO service and RevA service in the 1X territories. It's for push to talk on CDMA so if your area does not have it now, likely, it will soon.

I cannot wait to get my hands on the new data cards and the devices they would launch. I am sure Apple will be very disappointed to have chosen the EDGE over WiMax.
Check out my thoughts:
