Biometric
door locks are far from
new, but eKey's Biometric Entry System ups the ante over traditional
iterations by putting more than just one of your digits to work. The Bio-View biometric access system enables your various fingers to control different tasks, meaning that swiping your index finger could open or lock a door, while your middle finger controls the
security system. Additionally, the unit includes "an adjustable camera and intercom," and it can be configured "with a wide range of options and colors." The device is said to even be compatible with several third-party apparatus, and while you can certainly hit the read link for more details on eKey's latest, we'll hopefully be getting a much closer look ourselves when it debuts at
CEDIA.

what if you give him the finger - lol

The design gives you the impression that you are supposed to give it the finger...through the little hole at the bottom!

Biometrics for home doors sounds like a pretty neat idea, provided it's only subject to the traditional methods of fooling the scanners and people can't just break it.
What would you do to get into your house when the kids down the street smear some unsavoury substance on the finger pad though?

That's why you also have a voice-lock with a shielding over the system. For the security nut in you!

And if your finger isn't recognized, it becomes locked in the chamber and a mini-guillotine chops it off.

Can it convert keys into fingers?

Did anyone else read the headline as eBay?

Look again...You don't actually put your finger IN it, you swipe your finger on the sensor much like the biometric readers on laptops, etc. The black thing at the bottom is a button, presumably for calling the occupants of the house (or their butler) if you a guest.

If you follow the link, there's a clearer picture of the device. You can see that the black button is the doorbell, and you can see the camera behind the smokey glass.

A doorbell in a biometric entry system? I thought I could just do some break-dancing to ring the damn doorbell
Moiz @ Aug 18th 2007 6:36PM
Yea the biometric reader on my vaio laptop runs different apps that I assign to different fingers. Biometrics is pretty neat stuff.

What happens if you have injured your "unlock the door" finger and it has been wrapped in a bandaid or other bandage? You can't get into your house?
