AMD intros Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition
While AMD still has bigger and better things in store, those looking for some more instant gratification may want to consider the company's new Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition, which now occupies the top spot of its X2 line. At 3.2GHz, this one clocks in at 200MHz faster than the previous top-end 6000+ but, according to HotHardware, little else has changed. That means it's based on AMD's current 90nm DSl SOI technology, and boasts support for a single HyperTransport link at 2.0GHz, along with 2MB of L2 cache and a 125W TDP. If that's enough of a bump for you, you should soon be able to pick one of these up for $239 (in 1000-unit PIB quantities).

But will it blend?
Blendtec blender @ Aug 21st 2007 1:49PM
No. It will not blend. Let us just leave it at that.
The General @ Aug 20th 2007 11:35AM
Will it run Doom?
In Soviet Russia, AMD intros you.
Imagine a beowulf cluster of those!
Now that that's over with...
ark_v2 @ Aug 20th 2007 1:34PM
Leave that to the cellphones. What about Crysis?!
I LOVE THE CAPS LOCK KEY @ Aug 20th 2007 3:21PM
Yes it will run doom dumb fuck.
I LOVE THE CAPS LOCK KEY @ Aug 20th 2007 3:22PM
Yes, dumb A$$ it runs Doom.
Dan @ Aug 20th 2007 11:36AM
Both of you shut up. When will those two comments just die?
Kennyb123 @ Aug 20th 2007 12:32PM
Dan,
I believe the General was trying to get all the rest of the dumb repeatable comments out of the way... as you're right, they all need to die. He knows that too. Kal-El does NOT know that.
Nubaeus @ Aug 20th 2007 1:11PM
Will it run Quake?
Nubaeus @ Aug 20th 2007 1:11PM
Will it run Quake?
Jakc @ Apr 28th 2008 1:25PM
No it wont...you need other stuff aswell like ram hdd monitor powersupply stuff like that
AD @ Aug 20th 2007 1:12PM
And when did engadget start putting up post's about an incremental CPU release. This is nothing special/major and they get bumps in speed all the time. Also it is not mentioned that this is slower the Intel core 2's which have been out a year.
Chuckles McGee @ Aug 20th 2007 1:40PM
Engadget has covered a lot of incremental bumps in CPU speed (advancement of the quad-core Core 2s come to mind). Yeah, these are a lot slower than Intel's best, but for $240, the price is alright.
Wolfticket @ Aug 20th 2007 1:49PM
Didn't you hear, it comes in a black box. A BLACK BOX I tells ye!
mdm-adph @ Aug 21st 2007 10:49AM
Hey, AMD needs all the publicity they can get at this morning. Give 'em the benefit of the doubt. Or do you want to go back to the days of Pentium 4's again?
triple x @ Aug 20th 2007 1:23PM
im looking to OC my amd am2 3800 now. where can i find a good guide?
Alex P. @ Aug 20th 2007 1:38PM
do you see the writing on the side of the box? I believe it says "Box designed by Apple in California".
:p
Daran @ Aug 20th 2007 1:44PM
But will it run Doom, Quake, Half Life, Far Cry, F.E.A.R, Oblivion, or Crysis?
Ayle @ Aug 20th 2007 1:53PM
There is one problem: for that $40 more you can get a q6600.... I wonder how it performs againt it.....
Taylor @ Aug 20th 2007 2:02PM
I just bought an AMD 6000+ processor! Oh well, i wouldn't have spent the extra bones anyway, it was $169! :)
-Taylor
P.S. - We missed one generic comment: "I, for one, welcome our new slightly faster processing overlords."
MxSix @ Aug 20th 2007 2:27PM
What the...?:
"Which, in plain English, means the processor is offered in a swanky Black Edition box with no heatsink and fan included."
Besides being black and 200MHz faster, I feel this is silly almost.
Mischa Lockton @ Aug 20th 2007 4:22PM
You should see how many stock, crappy heatsink/cpu fans I have to throw away. Not even worth ebaying.
eddy_88_nite @ Aug 20th 2007 2:53PM
i overclocked my 6000+ faster than that with just fan cooling. I don't think this processor is even worth mentioning...
Neebs @ Aug 20th 2007 3:29PM
Well done Engadget comments. No racist thoughts at all about the black edition running faster.
nyuhsuk @ Aug 21st 2007 6:16AM
Nope. Apparently you're the only one that thought it.
anon @ Aug 20th 2007 3:53PM
Sweet, can't wait for the Asian version to appear.
Langdon Alger @ Aug 20th 2007 4:59PM
"In Soviet Russia"? "slightly faster processing overlords"? I'm loving the Simpsons references in this clearly (at least partially) intelligent forum. To which I must now add ...
Tonight's drive-in movie: "It runs every app!"
Female: "Will it run Doom?"
Male: "It runs every app!"
Female: "How about Crysis?"
Male: "It runs _every_ app!"
Female: "... and Quake, too?"
Homer in unison with Male: "It runs _every_ app!!!", (Homer only) "..., stupid!"
Alvin @ Aug 20th 2007 6:03PM
The fact that AMD can produce CPUs of such calibre with the now outdated 90nm fab processes is certainly a testament to their technological ingenuity. I can't wait to see what the future holds in store.
Mike @ Aug 20th 2007 6:18PM
The black edition is the same as the white edition, but its cooler and makes your text-to-speech sound like Eddie Murphy.
Ashraf @ Aug 20th 2007 7:46PM
I have a socket 939 motherboard.
Is this Socket AM2?
Will Socket 939 be available?
btw
stop posting dumbass comments!
zakezuke @ Aug 21st 2007 11:18AM
Last I've read, AMD is no longer going to produce 939 chips, but rather shift 95% of their production to AM2 first quarter 2008, and 5% 754.
The ADX6400CZW is an AM2 chip.
Fruition @ Aug 21st 2007 5:58PM
Yeah socket 939 is all but dead. I have a 939 myself, and a month or two ago I bought an OEM A64 X2 4400+ on the cheap to replace my 3800+... Pretty much the only 939's you can get these days are OEM.
Kupaka @ Aug 20th 2007 8:59PM
This can mean only one thing: a free digital copy of AC/DC's "back in black!"

Can someone explain to me what 'channel only' means, please. Thanks.
Tom @ Aug 23rd 2007 7:17PM
LMAO........ no one has a cule do they.
All they have done with the black edtion is bumped the multiplier up a notch so the memory is actually set to 400mhz Ratted (800mhz)
In the AMD 64 x2 6000+ it had an odd multiplier (15X)
so the ram speed was actually 375mhz (if you had pc26400 ram insalled.)
I can overclock my 6000+ easly to fix this problem.
JohJoh @ Sep 4th 2007 3:04AM
Uh the reason this seems such a rip-off is because the 6400+'s clock are actually unlocked fully and is able to be overclocked VERY EASILY
JohJoh @ Sep 4th 2007 3:15AM

The only noticeable diff at first that will catch your eye is the price and how it's 110 dollars more then the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ which is only 200mhz faster then the Athlon 64 X2 6000+. Dig a little deeper and you will notice that the Multiplier on the Athlon 64 X2 6400+ is unlocked unlike the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Multiplier. Now the 110 dollars more price tag starts to become more interesting, because instead of being limited to 3.3ghz like with the Athlon X2 64 6000+ with the locked Multiplier, you can now be able to reach clock speeds of upwards to 3.7ghz stable on the Athlon 64 X2 6400+. It may sound crazy but people that have bought these processors say that they are able to do it with just a little voltage increase and a decent air cooled system. Now the question is, is it still worth the extra 110 dollars over the Athlon 64 X2 6000+? It does yield a 28% performance advantage over an overclocked Athlon 64 X2 6000+ at 3.3ghz, but even with that said I’d have to say no.
Tomas Lee @ Sep 4th 2007 11:11AM
3.7ghz overclock thats really good! i never knew that, Thanks for your post JohJoh
I would agree with you thought its still not worth the extra money seen as you chould prob get intel chip which is probarly around the same speed and you could overclock it more. I brought my AMD 64 x2 6000+ before the black edtion was released if the price was cheaper and i knew that it had an unlocked muiltplyer then i probarly would have brought it.
DeathWolf @ Sep 14th 2007 3:12PM
Well JohJoh got the specs correct good job there. To all the idiots posting on this, here's a news flash fucktards! AMD not only out performs P4's but Cuo Duos as well.
I have used the Cuo Duos and that processor sucks ass so bad I can't believe that people are stupid enough to buy into it's actually a good processor, I mean damn you have to be a 100% TARD to believe it.
AMD has and always will OWN the gaming because that is what it was designed for to begin with. And people are asking will it run their games......HAHAA my god no one here knows what the hell they are talking about. Consider yourself educated now.
As for the 6400+ it rules and even out performs AMD FX-72 processors, believe it.

Well I usually wait it out until certain technology reaches its zenith, before I make a big purchase. The Athlon X2 6400 has really got me. I have been enjoying many gforce video card upgrades on my socket A mobo for a long time. But now I am ready for the mother of all upgrades. Hell, man, leaping from a socket A mobo with a Athlon XP 2800 to a wicked Athlon X2 6400 Black Edition has really got me by the ... ! And as for those know-it-all*#@tards that think PC Gaming is being phased out, to be replaces by console games... what a crock of shit that is! Consoles and the games that are played on them owe there very exsistance to high end PC rigs and the dedicated game developers that create games for these tool-heads that that are ignorant enough to say PC Gaming is being phased out. Console gamers cant build their own PS3. But, PC case modders take great pride in building a PC Gaming rig from the ground up. While there is certainly nothing wrong with having fun on a Xbox360 or PS3 - PC Gaming Rigs are the ultimate Gaming experience. My new Black Edition Gaming Marvel(Machine-Assisted Realization of the Virtual Electronic Laboratory) will be superior to any console.
Tom @ Oct 2nd 2007 2:39PM
Yeah so all the benchmarks are a lie then, why the fuck am i seeing Intel Duo cores at the top of the list then?? and AMDs at the bottem scoreing low????

This chip kicks ass!I just replaced my 5000 X2 with the 6400 X2 and its sooooo smooooth...I build a lot of new computers. I have tried the core duos and to be honest the amd AM2 X2's are way smoother!..only the extreme is pretty good but theres lots of slow core duos that dont even match the 5000 X2. I think I will stick with AMD! Intel is always over rated!
Halo @ Oct 13th 2007 8:47PM
With an unlocked multiplier and price dropping, I cant see anything wrong with this chip, and not getting a fan or heatsink is a good thing since you dont have to waste your time throwing that shit in the garbage.
Jim Caryon @ Oct 24th 2007 3:21AM
I saw somewhere while googling around that someone managed to get the 6400+ to run at 4ghz running at 250fsb. If all of them are manafactured the same than this might be something worth looking into.
I was thinking of upgrading from 4200+ to the 5000+ black edition but with the results i saw the 6400+ is not a bad overclocker afterall.
