Counter-Strike shooting slowed by actual shooting
At around 7 p.m. on Monday, ISPs around the country experienced a period of slowdown, which seemed inexplicable until workers discovered that fiber optic lines in Cleveland, Ohio -- reportedly owned by Level 3 Communications -- had been the target of sabotage... by gunfire. Anders Olausson, a TeliaSonera AB spokesman, said that the company had lost the northern leg of its network, and when technicians pulled up the lines to inspect, it was apparent that, "Somebody had been shooting with a gun or a shotgun into the cable." The damage was spread out over nearly two-thirds of a mile along the lines, and the effect was felt across multiple networks. Cogent Communications warned customers that they would be experiencing outages, and blamed the disruptions on "cut lines," and Keynote's Internet Pulse Report showed that the provider was experiencing significant latency. As of now, the saboteurs remain anonymous and their motives unknown, but undoubtedly scores of WoW players wait in fear of their next attack.

fuck yeah dude!!! i thought i was the only one!!!
Montusama @ Aug 21st 2007 4:23PM
Shouldn't these super expensive data carrying lines be placed like....UNDERGROUND?
tks @ Aug 21st 2007 4:56PM
I'm not sure how the technicians could've pulled the cables UP if they were above ground, boob.
sherman @ Aug 21st 2007 4:25PM
I wonder if these guys had anything to do with it?

So, now we're pulling a JT by just tossing Counterstrike into a headline to get attention. Way to step it up.

CS 1.6 is for n00bs whose 1337 "skills" don't transfer to Source.

...I'm surprised that the counter-strike community hasn't been burdened by myopic elitism. :\
MxSix @ Aug 21st 2007 4:38PM
That's weird because I am in Southern CA and last night while playing Battlefield 2 (I had a great game going too! :( ) at around 11:30, my Road Runner cable internet went completely out.
Wonder if this had to do with it.

Level 3 Communications is also the same company that connects calls with 1-800-GOOG411, a new service provided by Google.
Noone Important @ Aug 21st 2007 4:54PM
Isn't Level 3 Communications what remains of WorldCom? I think some 'round here might have heard of them at least...
fistpittingnork @ Aug 21st 2007 5:02PM
Wonder if they used the XM1014?
craper @ Aug 21st 2007 5:20PM
I was in the home of the CEO of level 3 which cost him 21 million but it was too small and he bought a bigger one also nearby. Life in the fast lane
Rational Thinker @ Aug 21st 2007 5:33PM
I don't see how this has anything to do with CS specifically, although it does make a good headline...
NovaLand @ Aug 22nd 2007 12:18AM
Bada-bing! You've actually figured it out!
johnzilla @ Aug 21st 2007 5:39PM
Um, can someone explain how you shoot underground cables without first digging them up? And if they were being dug up and then shot, don't you think someone would notice?
What kind of gun can shoot through several feet of earth and its projectiles still have enough energy to get through fiber optic conduit and shielding?
I smell bullsh*t in this story. A lot of it.

TeliaSonera AB is a swedish company, mostly owned by the swedish government. Now what interest do they have to do with fiber optics in Ohio?
Brandon @ Aug 21st 2007 6:53PM
Holy shit! Look at the dropoff on the steam network:
http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=stats&cc=CA
It went from ~220k @ 15:20 to ~75k @ 15:30.
That's crazy if it's related.
Montusama @ Aug 21st 2007 7:03PM
@johnzilla I'm going to take a wild guess and say these cables weren't underground (as in my first post ) and say its because of the reason Americans are cheap so stringing cables from pole to pole is cheaper than building an underground tunnel of sorts.
@Kristoffer From an earlier mass wiki read (when i first read the article) to now indeed TeliaSonera is a Swedish company but according to Wiki all Tier 1 Network, with all of them based in the US
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tier_1_network#List_of_Tier_1_IPv4_ISPs
# TeliaSonera/AS1299 (UUNet/AS701 transit) this from the wiki page which means (guessing here) they aren't a Tier 1 network they are a Tier 2 network but are rather large thus lines being cut in Ohio probably won't mean anything for their own traffic but maybe sweds need to use US servers....(while I totally go off subject)

I'm surprised, this sort of thing usually happens on New Years or the 4th of July.

America calls us the "Mistake on the Lake" and we cut of their Internets.
What now, bitches?
Steven @ Aug 21st 2007 8:26PM
Geezes, it's that easy to slow down nationwide network? That's almost ridiculous.
Shadyman @ Aug 21st 2007 10:10PM
Yes, because the "redundant lines" aren't built for that much capacity. Imagine that.
paul34 @ Aug 21st 2007 9:58PM
This explains why rapidshare seemed to have completely dropped off the earth yesterday.
It looks like the terrorists have definitely set up us the bomb! Silly Level 3 for not buying a diffusal kit!
feffrey @ Aug 21st 2007 11:42PM
I live in the midwest and I did not notice and downtime or slowing.
btw why shoot the cable? get some really big, long bolt cutters.
Thierry Olthuis @ Aug 23rd 2007 1:30AM
I guess the cables are kinda big. Too big to cut them with bolt cutters.
