iPhone 1.0.2 update released
Before you get your hopes up, there's allegedly no new functionality here -- "bug fixes" only. Then again, that was the verbiage last time, too, and there ended up being a few little goodies packed in there. Word to the wise: we're getting an error on our hacked unit right now, so let us know what y'all are getting.
Update: Yep, Jailbreak still works! Phew.
Update (code BAD): We take it back about our backup working properly. Despite the fact that we had a couple of error messages during the upgrade which seemed innocuous, this iPhone update wiped out our device and refused to restore our last back backup, instead creating a new backup based on a fresh restore. In other words: we just lost everything on our friggin device and the automatic backup is gone.

what??? im first! anybody find anything worthy???
you tools are so lame. Apple are so lamz it is only BUG FIXXXES PEOPLE!!! Nuffink new, get a clue losers
ok who else pronounced that as lambs?
L33t? How quaint. This person is obviously living in 1994.
Mr angry, you make my life complete
just kidding
It better have the "%" sign centered in the Stocks App. Seriously.
If you've hacked your iPhone you need to do a full restore. Suckaz.
Mine was stock and the update took 5 mins in total time...nice and smooth. I'd hate to have to restore and lose my text messages, my camera roll and god knows what else.
Glad I held out.
Umm...why don't you just sync your pictures...then if you lose your camera roll you're all good...

We're all really proud that you don't hack your hobbled cellphone. I hope you enjoy "marimba."
@Charlie,
I actually like the stock ringtones but what I enjoy more are keeping all my text messages, camera pics, settings and being able to update in 3-4 mins.
@CharlieX
Stock here too, I use iphoneringtonemaker and did the update and still have my ringtones. No Jailbreaking required.
So Jdoss, using iphoneringtonemaker wont cause the update to go bad??? I can do it with no harm to the phone?
I updated with no problems. It was fast too. I think since the program doesn't dink with the system files you'll be fine. There are noticable minor improvements
Yes, indeed! I second.... uhh, third that!
Efiko iPhone RingtoneMaker: installed 2 custom tones, upgraded to 1.0.2, smoooooth as silk.
To use EiRTM, there is no jailbreaking involved.
Everything stays the same if you restore, including your text messages. Everything is backed up when you sync with iTunes. Restoring erases the phone and then puts everything back.
I'm bricked.
Dont DL if you want to keep your goodies. :(
when you say bricked... do you mean bricked as in "inoperable from this point on" or bricked to a point where a restore your bricktastic-ness?
and the moral of the story is... don't do a blind update on a customized product until you know how it is going to work out.
This is SOP in linux. Even if they are not trying to mess with the hacks they're not going to go out of their way to make them work either. Folks are going to keep on having to play catch up with OS changes.
I'd say wait 3 weeks or so to give things a chance to get ironed out.
E
man i hope this fixes the app's from crashing constantly...any other ideas on a fix?
One thing I've noticed is that you are now able to scroll properly in Safari as the page is still loading whereas before it would mostly not allow you to scroll.
he's right ! engadget scrolls perfectly now !
Also, one issue I consistently have is that playing music while browsing web sites will very often (85% of the time) cause the music to stop playing. I have not been able to get this to happen with this update.
Aaah..interesting. WiFi reception is better. There are several WiFi access points in the area that I can see with my PC but have never been able to see with my iPhone. I can now see them. Also, my access point on the other side of the house would typically go in and out of reception and I now have a steady 2 bars. Nice.
There is a % sign in the stocks app now.
/me looks at is 1.0.0 fw iPhone...
Mine shows a % sign as well, what are you talking about?
From what I can see, they added a Drafts folder in the mail app ! Hooray, amd suddenly mails I had saved showed up miraculously.
This was already there before, AFAIK.
sorry, i had never seen it before ...
Standard "OEM", quick update, no noticeable changes. Tried the menus, settings, nothing stuck out particularly but I don't live in the device either...
Yep, I plugged my iPhone in to sync and do the update, and sure enough it wiped out all of my contacts. I hadn't yet synced it with my computer since I reformatted, so the contacts weren't yet on my PC and now they are all gone. Awesome stuff Apple.
Awesome stuff Paul.
The first rule of computers: backup, backup, backup.
Surely Apple is at fault for wiping out your contacts... But come on... If they are at all important to you why did you risk it? Having a common sense, you must know there is some probability that a firmware update will screw up your device, in which case you should of course have a backup of irreplacable data.
Strike that. Irreplaceable.
"Macs don't get those cryptic error messages." - Mac
They don't. There haven't been any cryptic error messages reported.
EDIT: Didn't see the update on the original story. Sucks guys - I haven't received any such messages ;)
"The iPhone "iPhone" could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (0xE8000029)."
If that's not cryptic then I'd love to see what your interpretation is.
Im not sure thats cryptic. its pretty honest. it says it doesnt know. :)
Has anyone tried putting the phone back in jail and then applying the update? I'm hoping that I can run the update after jailbreak as long as I put it back in jail. Oh, and does anyone know of a nice tutorial or utility (for windows) to put it back in jail?
there's a share button in the url section in safari so you can email urls. copy and paste would be better. duh.
or was that already there? can't remember that far back.
Already there, too...
Dunno if I stumbled on a new feature...while in Safari if you tap the top tool bar it will scroll back to the top of the page. Beats the hell out of swiping.
Last time I type this: that was already there before, too.
was there before
That was definitely already there.
Wow that is incredibly useful! Why wasn't I notified?!
The URL share button, the percentages in the Stocks app, and the Safari scroll-to-the-top were all already there.
"we just lost everything on our friggin device and the automatic backup is gone"
That sucks supreme monkey balls. I'm none to happy about apple backup systems since I tried to restore an image on my macbook only to find there's a bug on OSX 10.4.6/intel systems that means that you can't drag and drop a drive when using disk utility off the restore CD resulting in me having 4 hours off hair pulling before finally coming up with a workable solution. Backup your backups people and keep paper backups of any important stuff!
boot ur mac off a firewire harddrive... or another mac via firewire, then u can drag and drop. Better solution is to CarbonCopy Clone it to a dmg tho..
Eh? I don't see a drafts folder. I still have only inbox, sent and trash. And if I create a new email I don't see anywhere it would allow me to save to a drafts folder.
As I understand it, the drafts folder syncs with the drafts folder on your IMAP accounts and will remain in your IMAP account folder list no matter if there are actual drafts in it. With your POP accounts, it seems to appear when you need it on POP accounts (if you compose an email in a POP account on your phone and decide not to send it). Once you send all the drafts out of your POP account draft folder on your phone, the folder disappears until you save another draft.
For those of you who don't know how to get a "Draft" folder to appear, it is very simple. Type an email and instead of sending it, hit cancel. It will then ask you if you want to save your email. Hit yes, and the folder appears and saves your email. You can do this on any account on the phone.
P.S. Error code 0xE8000029 stands for:
You've been messing with our locked device trying to do cool stuff with it. We love cool stuff, but only cool stuff we tell you you can do. To ensure you don't do anything far too cool, we've helped you by automatically resetting you phone to the factory settings and ensuring your backup is just as fresh. Have a nice day!
damn it!! full restore and no back up!
c'mon apple, what the hell!!?
The percentages were always in the stock app.
I think even the original software for the phone allowed you to see percentages. All you had to do is tap the number and it would change to percentages.
I don't see any change there in this update.
Apparently firmware update 1.0.2 adds psychic abilities to iTunes also. I was ABOUT to hack my iPhone, and it decided to brick it before I had the chance. Currently restoring everything...
is it just me or are people using the word "brick" too often and too loosely these days??
Well, "brick" probably wasn't the right word, seeing as it restored and it works fine now. However, I WAS trying to hack it using iBrickr, so perhaps I just had that stuck in my head still.
If you bricked your phone it would be as useful as, well, a brick.
Steve Jobs says:
"Muah ha ha ha!"
I think they fixed the bug in the battery charge status app. Now my phone accurately ays that it is fully charged....
That's what you get for hacking your iPhone. Steve has your serial number and WILL get you.
Yup, that's Apple, just working...
just imagine this were a microsoft product.
then it would actually update and not erase everything.
Don't need to imagine it - I have a Windows Mobile phone.
WM devices keep the OS in a ROM image (because, you know - at 22-28MB it's not a bloated OS like MacOS X's 270MB) and so when you update the ROM image, it replaces the entire ROM. So, in that case, it does blow away everything pretty much exactly like the iPhone does.
However, there's a difference. iPhone keeps the OS in what is essentially an open filesystem, so it should be possible to just update the files needed. When updates for specific apps are released for WM, you don't need to flash the ROM and you don't lose your files.
Of course, the other half is that since WM is an open system - you don't have to hack it with weird tools to do the basics... or even the really complicated stuff. On the other hand, there's lots of tools if you do want to do that kind of thing.
HAHA!
I just did the update. My phone is working perfectly and it was unlocked with the Anderson Method and has had no problems at all.
Awesome. A phone that bricks itself when you update it.
Does Apple even realize what sort of device this is?
This is not going to be pretty.
Please see above post by Ahmed about the correct usage of the word "bricked"
Hi everyone,
How are you all enjoying your participation in Apple's paid beta? I'll be joining the iPhone team next year after all your weeping and gnashing of teeth has resulted in a solidly performing device.
/learned my lesson on my lemony MacBook Pro. First-gen hardware = for suckers.
I see, so having spent multiple thousands of dollars on a first gen Apple product, you're digging at us for spending multiple hundreds on another. I get it.
But to answer your question, I'm quite happy beta testing my iPhone. I'm enjoying it immensely, thanks.
This must be great news to those who like to "Think Different" NOT.
I had a jailbreaked phone, the update made me restore. I got the nasty "Couldn't restore" the first time, but on a second try, it worked fine.
I second Ahmed:
If you can restore a device and get it working again it's not bricked, just messed up.
@you clowns below
"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA..." (strokes his Blackberry 8830...)
I had jailbreaked my iPhone just the night before and was enjoying some NES action when I read about the update. I restored the phone first, then updated. It went flawlessly. I then went back through the steps of re-jailbreaking my phone, but I had already put all the files and switched my master password, so it wasn't necessary to do a lot of the grunt work, and it only took about 15 minutes compared to last night's forty. Now I also put on the voice recorder and terminal programs. New ringtones and a launcher are next!
Just updated mine (only hacked with iFuntastic). Gave same cryptic error, did full restore, but was able to restore from backup. And was able to redo mods with iFuntastic and it still works fine
wifi seems a little better. Main thing this fixed for me is the learning dictionary not learning my username. If you still have v1.0.1, go to notepad and type vrillusions. It will not let you type the u. if you go back and correct it, then type it again it still won't let you type u. v1.0.2 it still didn't let me type u the first time, went back and corrected it and now it learned it. Since I use that all the time I'm really happy now.
The phone only has the potential to not restore properly after you have HACKED your phone, for those of you uneducated posters who are hagging about apple releasing a bad update. Those that have not hacked their phones have been fine.
Now, I'm off to try the update on my jailbrake'd (hacked) iPhone, crossing my fingers...
Actually, no. There are people with unmodified iPhones who have had problems.
Yes, but I was referring to people trolling.
And yes, I am aware that there are some non-hacked individuals who are having problems
so to clarify, when updating a jailbroken phone you must do a restore from itunes first? not a restore with some other 3rd party app?
That's what worked for me, and what I suspect will work for everyone who has a jailbreaked phone. When you restore the iPhone, iTunes reverts it back to the Apple-only-software version like when you bought it.

I had the same problem with the backup failing and all my stuff being lost. Call history, favorites, usage data; nothing I can't recreate or do without, I suppose. My Voicemail is also behaving a little strangely; calling voicemail instead of showing me a list of messages.
Losing the few Notes I did just serves to remind me NEVER to use Notes; it doesn't synchronize with anything in a meaningful way and it just stays stuck on the iPhone. Not very useful at all.
You need to set up your voicemail after a power cycle...
Can someone please clarify this for me then: Has the update actually bricked any phones, or does it just reset them?
yeah people are using "brick" too much. As far as I've seen none of this hacking around has actually "bricked" an iphone making it worthless and nothing more than a paperweight. You may have to do a restore and you may lose data, but the iphone still functions, and thus it is isn't a "brick"
People need to stop whining then. Sure, losing all your data unexpectedly would suck, but not being properly backed up when updating a hacked phone? Seriously?

I restored my iphone to defaults and updated at the same time. It restored. However, now it's stuck in an unactivated state, and errors out every time I try to connect with a slightly different error code 0x000025 to the one above.
I'm not going to use the term bricked, but it's basically useless at this point. I've got everything backed up so I wouldn't mind having to redo everything, if only it would connect.
Follow up: After restarting both the iPhone and my Mac, the iPhone restored to its backup properly.
Desperately needed on the next update: the feature that is itunes that allows you to stream your music to an Airport. You've got the wifi, why not? I'd love to control my stereo from my pocket.
While on the subject of things I'd like in an update, I would love itunes on wifi, transferable notes to my mac stickies or something, with the developement of those two, it should be easy to then print using wifi from iphone to networked printer.
and above all, I WANT STEREO BLUTOOTH OF SOMEKIND!!
and some new sounds... come on. new wallpapers but no new tones?
Same thing for me.
1. Buy a $500+ gadget
2. Hack it to do things that the manufacturer did not intend on "Voiding the Warranty" in the process
3. Try updating through the "approved/copywrited" software
4. Bricked $500+ gadget......... priceless
The moral of the story is if you don't know what you are doing leave it to the pros. That's why mine still works perfectly fine, no loss of data, nothing just good ol version 1.0.2 without any differences that I can notice at least. You have noone to blame but yourselfs, and I am sure that the disclaimers on the software that you used boldly stated this.
Has it occurred to anyone else that Apple has released two updates in two months for this new product and the only people having trouble are those that have hacked it? Having worked at Motorola I consider the ease of update alone to be worth the price tag.
