Sony's Bravia VPL-VW60: the SXRD black pearl with 35,000:1 contrast
September 20th: know it home cinema buffs. That's the date Sony releases their SXRD followup to the VPL-VW50 "Pearl" projector in Japan. The new Bravia VPL-VW60 projects a 1,920 x 1,080 image with a 35,000:1 contrast ratio and 1,000 lumens courtesy of its (¥42,000 / $367) 200W high pressure mercury lamp and trio of 0.61-inch SXRD chips. It's also quieter than its predecessor at 22dB while packing a pair of HDMI-CEC class HDMI jacks supporting 1080/60p, 50p, and 24p. Best of all though, Sony managed to seriously up the specs while cutting the introductory list price nearly in half to "just" ¥441,000 (about $3,858).

where are the HOT korean models ??? ;)
Maybe because Sony is JAPANESE?
oh yeah... asian models then :P
i, for one, want to see some hot caucasian models. where's the love, everybody?
To see the models in 35000:1 contrast you gotta buy it, or organize a party for that money :)
It's a nice product by the sound of it, but I'm boycotting sony, (plus it's too pricey for my impulse buying).
You still can't project black.
Thanks for those words of wisdom.
Makes you wonder if they ever find a technical solution for that, some kind of interference light killer that can make a surface blacker than the surroundings, theoretically possible I think in some distant future.
Or simply a projection screen that absorbs light but reflects light coming from the projector maybe.
I'm thinking aligned nanotubes, make them point to the projector and make the inside reflective and the outside and black maybe? something along those lines.
Excuse the triple post but it's for science! :P
Of coarse it is impossible to project the absence of light, thats why people build pitch black home theaters. Front projection has its advantages and disadvantages, but for me the good by far outweighs the bad.
That's an invalid statement. If you want a movie-like experience, then you MUST put the image up on the screen the way the movie theaters do. They PROJECT it.
No, it is perfectly valid. How do you project red? Block all the colors besides red. Same thing with blue, green, and every combination. What is black? The absence of color. If we block every color, no light gets projected. If we don't block any colors, they all get through, making white. That is why you can't project black.
She be a fine vessel
A better product with a price cut from Sony was someone out sick when they approved that? Good specs great price.
I really want this and hope to import/ebay off some stuff after the holiday to afford it
