While
Mattel has been on a roll of late with swank
new toys, the firm has apparently hit a
rough patch after being forced to
recall "millions of toys including 436,000 die-cast cars." The wee roadsters purportedly "contained excessive amounts of lead," and now a class action
lawsuit has been filed that aims to force the firm to "pay for the testing of children who might have gotten lead poisoning from the toys." Reportedly, representatives from Mattel were unavailable to comment, but the outfit's CEO has stated that "the company's more aggressive testing methods to uncover tainted toys may lead to more recalls" in the future.

That ladies and gentlemen is the beauty and privilege of having that "Made in China" stamped on everything in our households. The slogan should be "Chinese made goods, where we don't know what in the world goes in it." I'm not bashing the country and/or the people. My problem is that we have everything made over there without any oversight for consumers' and employees' safety other than from the same slave masters themselves. Let's face it, we have no idea what goes in it, who's inspecting it, who approves it, and under what conditions. At least here in the U.S. we can chase the bastards. In China, well, they're out of our hands. The manufacturing industry has become even shadier than in the Hoffa days.

As much as I disagree with the outsourcing and poorly QC'd product. One must admit Mattel and its subsidies are very good about the whole Corporate Responsibility thing, (if not too good). They recall products with a drop of a hat it seems like.
I guess Now would be a good time to ask the question. When it comes to profitability and image, would it not make sense to make a better product first, then to skimp out and then recall it later?

Mattel is not that good. If you look at how they ran the safety checks for their product, they used the same company that made the toys to check the items before they were shipped around the world. Usually it should be done by an independant company, but Mattel probably wanted the items quick and cheap so they used the same company.

Well its not only issue with Chinese manufacturers but it is deep rooted problem with US stock market that wants companies to show profit every quarter and the best way to squeeze that money out is to go for cheapest way to produce goods. Also isnt it Mattel's responsibility to test toys before it lands in kids hands to make sure it is not harmful ? I remember lots of European manufacturers used to have their own QC people on site of production to make sure goods are produced according to their specified standards and if it deviates it is cheaper to reject them on-site instead of going thru this whole circus of recall.

I'm sure the only ones winning in this case will as always be the lawyers!

Gee, let me see....thousands of US jobs lost in exchange for cheap labor outsourcing to China to increase Mattel's bottom line profits. Let's see what the bottom line is after all the recalls.
