iPhone's latest update improving WiFi and camera?
Despite the fact that we had a bit of trouble with the latest iPhone update, some users are reporting drastically improved WiFi reception and camera performance since installing v1.0.2. Although Apple didn't exactly go into detail about what "bug fixes" were being addressed, a number of posters on various forums are apparently thrilled with the boost in WiFi reception and the "vast improvement in the camera's live video update." Of course, it's very possible that these betterments are simply due to differing circumstances in use before and after the update, so we'll leave it up you: have you noticed any drastic meliorations since the update, or is this stuff just all in our head?[Via MacNN]

def have noticed a better wifi pick up...today in NYC i tested wifi and had about 20 dif wifi's pop up...that was NEVER the case...granted the signals werent strong for ALL...but i def have noticed improved wifi reception....by alot..
Yes, I got it the first time. Go take your A.D.D. meds.
Sorry, that was supposed to be responding to Bradley Miller.
yea really
I'm so jealous of a $600 phone that has less features than my $250 phone...
as you should be
And the truth shall set you free
You are boring...you bore me.
Why do people always assume that when someone doesn't like something, they're just jealous? I just.. hate Apple. Plain and simple. I refuse to use anything manufactured by them.
Or, I should say, that carries the "Apple" logo. I don't think they manufacture their products themselves...
don't forget that design, interface and user experience are all features
Less features? The correct word would be "fewer."
The iPhone has fewer features than a $250 phone.
Dragod, you bore me...I am bored by your boring comments. You are a bore.
Why do people claiming don't like Apple will read all the posts about it while keep on telling he already has something better. Isn't it jealous?
No, it means I care enough about it to tell people that not everyone likes "the one thing everyone was waiting for!"
If no one goes ahead and says "No, I don't like it", everyone thinks that everyone likes the product.
This whole time I kept wanting an iPhone. But now, NOW I see that I don't HAVE to want one! You my friend have opened my eyes! I can now go through my day tomorrow being happy with my phone that doesn't have an Apple on it! Someday Microsoft will make a phone, and just like with their portable music player, they'll show everyone the RIGHT way to make a good product!
No GPS, no sale
When are we going to get a -real- iPhone update that openly adds features? I don't know about others, but I watch the Engadget RSS feed daily hoping for news that an iPhone update has been released delivering -something- tangible (like Exchange support, iChat, or custom ringtones).
I thought part of the fun of the iPhone was supposed to be frequent addition of features that "the users will love."
i still like the helio ocean
I love it too! I just wish it had a slightly larger screen, and was a bit thinner. I'd take that over an iPhone anyday!
sort of off topic, but will i be able to perform the hardware unlock, and use tracfone SIM? cause that would be the only fone ive ever had with SIM. ive been on verizon and sprint.
iPhone hatred has officially become as tired and over played as iPhone love. Congrats haters... you have made it ok for the hold outs to now stop bitching and just buy the refurbs.
back on topic;
I just cant bring myself to update this time, the whole restore process is such a pain in the ass.
seriously, no reason to waste time with a restore if the only thing they fixed is incremental wifi and camera updating.... that's what I own a laptop and a digital camera for.
The camera live video is a little snappier.
...and so far, I've met three different guys who were in public places complaining about how bad the iPhone is, but didn't recognize it when I held it up for them to see.
It's not that the iPhone is crap, it's that when you are paying for a phone you want the same thing say an 8525 can give you and then a nice design / slim.
Basically I do not understand why anyone in gods name would get a iPhone over an 8525. Other than maybe to look cool.
The WM phones have a ton more features, 3rd party support and a lot cooler overall. Albit the software is a bit ahead of the hardware and it may lag once or twice..
The Helio Ocean is very sexy though.. I just saw it and can't comment but basically it looks nice.
The iPhone has a much nicer screen - 3.5" versus 2.8" at twice the resolution: 320 by 480 with really great contrast and saturation versus 240 by 320 and so-so C&S on the 8525. Yes, I've seen the 8525, and if you think that screen is in the ballpark, you need to hold them up side by side with video playing.
The iPhone isn't a slider (I hate slider and flip-phones), and that "real" keyboard on the 8525 isn't that great.
The 8525 is TWICE the size of the iPhone (about the same frontal area, but twice as thick), weighing half again as much.
To make it "iPhone equal," you're also going to need to go out and buy a couple of 4 gig MicroSD cards (at about $100 each) and get used to swapping them out until they get around to releasing the 8 gig version some time next year.
Then, of course, you have Windows Mobile. Ick. After using the iPhone interface, using WM is a huge step down in usability.
The only real advantages the 8525 has over the iPhone are 3G and a lower price.
@ Michael G
Dude, seriously, you're talking about how people would only buy the iPhone because it looks cool, but then two lines later you're praising another device's sexiness??
You sir, are the very definition of a tool.
Nope. The changed files have nothing to do with wireless reception or the camera.
So, why no mention of n95 updates? The last update improved the camera on that as well!
Half of my phone number lable bug has been fixed, and I've noticed this site scrolls a whole lot better, but thast about it so far.
It is always easier to point out flaws than praise anything or anyone. But those who find the good in everything are the ones who separate us from the animals. To loath something that others like, with no valid point or pursuasive argument as to why others should dislike the product, makes anyone look like a fool.
*I think the refresh on the camera is a little better, but still not good enough for them to add video functionality as of yet.
*As for WiFi. I never noticed any bad WiFi connections, so I had no basis for comparison. I have noticed, however, since the update I have not experienced many 3 full bars under the WiFi settings menu. If the WiFi range has increased, there may be more room for even stronger connections to be displayed.
I have noticed less scrolling lag and less safari issues. The keyboard response has improved in safari while loading in my experience. Safari has not unexpectedly quit so far.
when i updated mine it turned into a transformer...who knew?
Why doesn't anyone know about the openmoko? Very similar hardware, but with infinite freedom. I don't know why you people put up with the iPhone, seriously. Did you not know there was an alternative?
No, we just prefer and integrated, complete OS, on a phone that was, you know, ACTUALLY available... And worked.
P.S. You know that the NIC Neo1973 is not only not 3G, it's not even EDGE? Yep, that's right, just plain vanilla GPRS...
Holy crap. Time to submit a few feature requests. brb.
I see what the situation is... the first version came out a while ago, but it's feature list sucked. For the next one, they have a ton of work to do and stuff to add.
Under heavy hackage now. Keep your eye on it though.
"Betterment" isn't a word. How about "it was embettered"?
Actually, betterment is a word.

Try looking things up before you post.
And "embettered" isn't actually word. It was a joke. Just a comment on the sometimes tortured language the bloggers here at Engadget sometimes use.
If I hear about one more product "loosed" on an unsuspecting public, I'll scream.
Excellent. Your powers of observation are astounding.
What now, oh wise and sage Master of the Obvious?
Betterment is, in fact, a word.
Thank you,
- the word police.
I did the update, rebooted, and my iphone turned into a Treo 700w on the Verizon network. Very strange.
interesting. mine became a zune...
In the interested of the newest internet buzzword, "transparency", I would like to see a simple set of release notes for the iPhone updates.
Children, children, children!
Relax! Many of you are haggling and stressing over slightly more than nothing. Even if your friends do call you "Dude" or "Man," does that make you one just because your BlueTooth supercalifragilisticexpealidocious handheld gizmo is the lastest? No. It's still just a gizmo. It may be a nice gizmo that you payed a lot of money to acquire, but it doesn't make you a better person. It doesn't make you a man, or a dude, or a goddess for that matter. But it could help you to find some nice Chinese take-out in an unfamiliar city or town. That's all. It's a tool.
Now go back to work, and calm yourselves. There will be many, many more iterations of this movie, all claiming to be "new, different, and better." That's the market doing its thing. It's not nirvana.
Oh, BTW, when your latest hand-held gizmo can cure cancer or heart disease, please use it to send me a message. That will be worth getting all psyched about.
Love,
FatherTime
Replied to the question at hand, I've noticed 3 improvements:
The camera refreshes a ton faster.
Scrolling is smoother and is quicker to update.
I get a tiny bit better wifi. The iPhone picks up the signal in my office at work, before it would connect but fail to work.
For all the one guy here that praises the 8525 you must not know anything at all about smart devices. All of HTC devices are nice and all but the crap Windows Mobile that runs on them is junk. I work in the IT department of a large company 500+ employees and I am responsible for mobile devices. I have had to hard reset the 8125 and the 8525 countless times. I prefer the Nokia E62 over any of those devices its a much stabler OS (Symbian) then Windows Mobile. And they have Blackberry connect also for Symbian. I own an Iphone now and anyone that says they prefer an 8525 over it because it performs better or has better options is a straight tool. I have never had to reset my iphone because the OS just cant handle the software in it. Windows mobile is just as flawed as regular Windows is and I speak from experience and not from the gut like many others. There are certain options that Windows Mobile has that the Iphone doesnt but those are yet to come so just be patient and they will.
Amen. I owned a 8125 for 2 years, and my best friend runs an 8525 (which i aaaaalmost bought). Sorry kids, my iphone is light years better than those phones. I did like the keyboards -- kind of. The feature set is nice. The lack of apps on the iphone does suck. But the bottom line is, the HTC phones + win mobile are just not stable. At all. Features are great and all -- if you can actually use the phone on a day to day basis. I sold my 8125 to a friend -- I'm pretty sure he smashed it out of frustration. Thats not a joke.
The iphone works when I need it to, its 100x faster than the HTC phones, and I haven't reset the iphone once.
And your comment about the E62 is spot on. If cingular hadn't crippled the java on that phone, I'd recommend it to anyone over the HTC phones.
Is it me or do the Apple haters sound like they're all immature kids upset because mom grounded them today?
