The NHC Ecolong: 85-hours of MP3s off a single AAA
Sure, it's not much to look at, but if you're aching for a no-frills, MP3/WMA (non-DRMed) player on the el cheapo then NHC's got you covered. Their 1GB Ecolong DAP goes 85 hours off a single AAA battery for just ¥4,980 or about $43. They'll even produce it in this $51 premium camo model for that special, manifesto-writing loner burdening your family's good name.

Wait so hours or mins??? I am confused. Title says 85 hrs but the text says 85 mins??
..."85 minutes off a single AAA battery ..."
But the tile says 85-hours?
Which is it exactly? I presume 85-hours, but just to clarify.
So... um... hours or minutes? 85 mins isn't such an accomplishment, and def not "green"
Ah, now both the title and the summary say 85 hours.
85 hours....hell yea
stick that in your audio jack ipod
It won't blend, so don't bother asking
What kind of blend? Probably neither.
But will it play Doom?
I don't know. If you throw it into some foilage, the camo model would probably blend pretty well. So, I'd advise not doing that unless you want to burn it with the leaves or shred it with a lawn mower.
both japanese sites say 85 hours
While I won't complain over companies finally deciding to increase battery life and not just focus on every other aspect of their gadgets, but 85 hours on a 1 GB mp3 player seems a bit overdone to me. On 1 GB you either have really crappy quality mp3's or you won't even get 20 hours worth of music on it.
My current mp3player has 30 hours worth of battery life and that is long enough for me.
id buy this for my mother. shes very stupid about electronics. 85 hours... and less then 20 hours of music... thats perfect lol.
plus id play with the interface to, i like to get familiar with products. but i like how the buttons are small and raised. my other mp3 players the buttons are recessed or flat/touch screen. definately looks like a shirt pocket kind of player.
Wouldn't be surprised if GreenPeace ordered a few thousand of these. That's crazy battery life though. Only thing stopping me from buying it is the design.
Somehow, the first thing that came to mind as soon as I saw this was Ted Nugent. Here's my rationale; it's got the camouflage thing going, not very much to look at, but it can pack a punch. Come to think of it, it's a bit funny.
And the entire collection of his hits can fit on there with room to spare!
I'm going to celebrate by skinning a rabbit and then shooting it and then eating it.
ahahh manifesto writing loner: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seung-Hui_Cho
the bigger question (and one that no one seems to care about) is sound quality. if they get 85 hours by giving us bad audio, distortion, no bass or some combination of the above is it worth any more than a dollar store FM player (you get your choice of colors at the dollar store)
I had one, but dropped it in the grass. Now I can't find it.
I would pay double if this had a SDHC slot as well.
First, Engadget, I really enjoy your writing style, and the news you cover. However, your last sentence this time really confused me for a bit. I sort of assumed there was to be a comma after "manifesto-writing", so I was thinking "loner burdening", as in, who would be burdening the loner?
Here is a very simple modification which I think is much clearer for people like myself:
"They'll even produce it in this $51 premium camo model for that special, manifesto-writing loner who burdens your family's good name."
Original:
"They'll even produce it in this $51 premium camo model for that special, manifesto-writing loner burdening your family's good name."
The price and battery life is all good but how does it sound?
I want one how does one go about getting one ?
