Dell XPS M1730 shows its colors in the wild
Just in case you haven't seen enough of Dell's, um, eye-catching XPS M1730 gaming laptop, the folks at LaptopSpirit have kindly let loose a slew of new pics of it in the wild, with the laptop's various color options on full display. In addition to the stylish red option above, you'll also be able to get the laptop in your choice of Sapphire Blue, Bone White or Smoke Grey, each of which should attract varying degrees of askance glances from passers-by. Thankfully, the laptop's innards are a good deal more attractive than its exterior, including your choice of top-end Core 2 Duo processors, NVIDIA GeForce Go 8700M GT graphics, up to 4GB of RAM, and an optional Blu-ray drive among other desirable options. Those still undecided about a purchase can get a better look at the laptop by hitting up the read link below.

If they had problems painting simple covers on the XPS M1330 and the Inspirons, this is gonna rape their paint buckets
What an idiotic and ridiculous comment. I'd like to come live on your planet where everything is as simple as you make it out to be. How does that armchair feel?
...says the 400 lb McDonald's addict. STFU.
Is this what all those other Dell laptop delays are about? They spent the past 6 months making sure the played out Alienware style looks JUST PERFECT!
Plaid out alienware style??? I don't think many would dispute that Alienware has a very good design team. Further, I've NEVER (literally, never) actually seen an alienware computer in real life, so I just can't imagine how you're seeing all of these aliewnare computers to make the style "plaid-out."
P.S. You wanna talk about plaid-out style? How about you look at a company whose products all follow a strict basic design and never really varies a model's design, EVEN when it updates the model. Yeah, take a bite out of them apples... I see SOOOO many apple laptops in the city, its INSANE. I don't see how anyone who cares about being unique and showcasing their stye would ever get an apple in this day and age. Once you do, you just become an anonymous face. I go to NYU, and I see countless number of macbooks, blackbooks, imacs, ipods, iphones... EVERYWHERE I go. I don't like getting products that everyone else has, so I'm still waiting on my m1330. I'm sure there will be a few m1330s around, but it will be extremely more rare than seeing any type of Apple computer.
Apples are all over the place..but the design of Apple hardware is FAR from played out. Its not tacky like the above dell laptop design. Sleek casings with clean lines and neutral colors never will be played out. In 10 years you'll look back at this dell laptop and say "ew" just like if you go google Atari Jaguar pics now. Aluminum / White is timeless.

"I'm sure there will be a few m1330s around, but it will be extremely more rare than seeing any type of Apple computer."
I dont know about you, but when I'm buying a gadget, I buy it for quality and usefulness... not because no one else has it.
So you enjoy your green Dell laptop, but guess what... at the end of the day it's just another Dell.
@ daedalus
When I buy anything, there are many things that go through my mind. For example, practicality, exclusivity, where the company is based, what the companies' initiatives are, etc. Consumers hold great power with their spending choices and these choices can greatly affect the world in ways such as hurting/helping the environment, funding terrorist regimes (just thought id throw it out there), or more simply, pouring money into the hands of chinamen (away from americans).
Anyways, the point is, if I am going to pay 2000+ for a laptop, I want it to satisfy all of my needs - and Apple just can't do that. I don't want to buy something that everyone else has; I want to buy something that can serve my needs and get me a few OOs and Ahhs because no one has seen it before. And just as the m1330 is "just another dell", so is any apple computer
"just another apple," so I don't really get that statement. If you're trying to say that people see an m1330 and think, "Oh, thats just another dell," then I think youre WAYY off. Whenever people saw my m1210, they would Oo and Ahh (especially if they know anything about the different models, or what xps is). Ultimate take home point - people are ok with paying extremely high prices if they know that no one else is going to have the item or "exclusivity"
Ferraris are really cool - very few people have them because the price is so high, but it isn't the price that makes the item desirable. It is the fact that its a) an extremely powerful machine, b) no one has them, so you join an elite group when you get one.
@ EngadgetFanBoi
I don't know about you, but I get enough "Ooohs" and "Ahaas" towards my Macbook Pro. I'm a university student, and my roomate, has a Dell XPS M1330....and whenever we're both using our laptops say in the library, or the cafeteria...the "Ooohs" and "Ahaas" always go towards my MBP...and not his Dell. A Dell is well....a Dell. There are tonnes more Dell's out there no matter how you look at it, and in that scenario...an Apple laptop is considered rare. You cannot use NYC as an example, because it is one of the most industrialized areas. Go to other cities, and then you'll see which laptop, out of every make out there, will be getting the admiraton.
People buy Apple laptops (and Macs, in the general sense), becuase of it's sense of elegance, styling, finish, and ease of use. Let me put it this way...the current Macbook Pro exterior design, has literally remained unchanged for 5 years. The current design was introduced with the Powerbook G4's several years ago, and in terms of styling...it STILL remains the best looking laptop. Apple has created a design that has essentially stood the test of time, while every other maker, such as Dell, literally re-design their laptop's exterior casing every 6 months just to look (in their views) visually competitive.
Going back to my roomate, he now regrets his Dell purchase, and frequently says that If he could go back in time, he would have gotten a Macbook Pro (he doesn't like the white/black Macbook), and that his next laptop would definately be a Macbook Pro....and this is coming from a guy (him) who was addicted to PC's all his life and never wanted to even look at a Mac.
You know what get's me even more "Ooohs", and "Aaahhs"? When people see me running Windows XP on my Macbook Pro while I'm gaming. They are literally stunned at a Mac running Windows. And then the questions begin. :P.
The black and silver color options are so bad... hmmm.
I'm glad Dell is pushing the envelope in design, the m1330 is gorgeous and unique, but this thing is sinfully ugly. If I had the cash, it wouldn't stop me from getting it... but I'd want to keep it in a brown paper sack while I was using it.
I think it looks better "in the wild" than the other pics I've seen before.
Not that it's attractive, but better.
That is one sweet looking car amp.
oh wait...
argh my xps gen 2 broke for the 3 time i am never getting a high end computer from dell again
I think the red LED option is clearly the way to go, blue is the second option wheres the bone white one?
BATMAN!
Thanks for the linking guys ;-)
I think it's pretty ugly, but I bet it performs well.. If I had the loot I think I'd pick one up, even though it is quite unsightly. I prefer performance over looks myself, although both are important. I want a laptop that I can actually play the latest greatest games on. My Vaio does well with gaming, but the newer stuff like Bioshock, not gonna happen. ;) I wish there was a way to try one out and see it in person before you plunk down $4000 but alas I am just another "Sheeple consumer" to Dell I spose.
as engadget said "eye-catching" its so0o eye catching because its so0 freaking ugly.
What happened to the release date of 8/27? It should be the 28th all around the world, right?
Unless this thing has some superior firepower, I'm waiting for the Precision 6300. Should be similar specs, less ugly looking. That release date was 8/30, let's see what happens...
It's UGLY. Just plain ugly.
with other mobile manufacturers stepping up the design game, Dell is going to have to re-think some things. Thin is in. and this thing is overweight even by today's 'Gaming Notebook' standards.
I cant believe after all the free market research that Dell got from the leaked photos awhile back that they are still releasing it looking as offensively horrendous as that disgusting monstrosity.
check this out...

I never had hard core techy types down as those folks who really worry about looks as long as it kicks fill rates out of the park.
I really wouldn't care what it looked like as long at it worked, was reliable, could play BIOSHOCK or similar at 1900x1200 with high settings and fit in my rucksack (I have a big rucksack :-) ).
Looking forward to come official specs rather than all this hyped up speculation.
Point 1. Date was wrong! Passed the 27th Aug and not a sniff
Point 2. What else is wrong, won't believe a word til its released by Dell.
Cool. Check out this video - looks like they show more of the system.

Have used macs all my life , and I love them . I own a Dell xps 1710 for my gaming, and an Alienware Area 51 ALX. Just ordered the Beast 1730, with the ageia graphics card instead of the Alienware 9750 because of All Those features wow what a PowerHouse. So the masses can talk about how ugly it is, thats their option. Me I'm gonna Play it Real Hard ...Oh Yeah!
sure I wish the case looked a little more alienwareish, but the xps 1730 is the best you can get right now for gaming. It will soon be mine. Oh, and it will of course spank the hell out of any pile you can buy off the mac site. people that speak out about macs being the best are just caught up in a fad and make me want to vomit my gizzards right in the gutter.
