First photos of Fujitsu-Siemens' Scaleo Home Server
Fujitsu-Siemens is supposed to debut the Scaleo, its first entry in the Windows Home Server market, later this week at IFA, but this press shot -- the first non-renders we've seen -- have surfaced a bit early, along with some more specs. The Scaleo will feature 4 internal drive bays, four USB 2 ports, two eSATA ports, "always-available" operation as opposed to being always-on, and silent operation. No word on that rumored two-drive RAID array or that 50W power consumption, but we'll know more when we get our hands on one at the conference.

I gotta ask Ryan, is the PODCAST overwith? I mean it has been such a long time since you guys did one...I really miss them. I think I speak for many fans when I say we would rather a mediocre podcast then no podcast at all!! Come on, we need SOME update on the weekly podcast? Thanks Ryan.

Now if it just ran Orb and Media Center I'd be all over this....

That's a nice design. I'm always inclined to build my own rig but this would be nice to have in addition to my rig.

Whats the price?? I want a WHS, but I hate to pay the $599 and up.
strider_mt2k @ Aug 29th 2007 10:50PM
Will it play DVD ISOs?
steveo @ Aug 30th 2007 3:39PM
This is a network attached storage device it only has USB, eSata, ethernet and power ports sure their might be a vga port hidden behind their somewhere, but this isn't a playback device WHS.
i.e. this doesn't connect to a tv or a monitor it's a NAS for backup purposes and media streaming(which will take a bit of work to get dvd ISOs working).

"I want a WHS, but I hate to pay the $599 and up."
Don't forget to add in the ongoing cost of anti-virus and anti-spyware for that Windows box.

I have a friend who owns the Link Station. It's very compact and it is a simple way to access music, or video. He put over 3500 CD's on it before it was nearly full. It's quite fast and very reliable.

It has 400GB of space, try filling that up!
getz76 @ Aug 30th 2007 12:23AM
400gb? Between my DVD ISO files, my Protools sessions, and my RAW image files from my Nikon, I have 4tb storage and wondering what to buy next when I move to HD-DVD or Blue-ray and want to rip the ISOs. 400gb wouldn't even cover my culled photo archive.
granny down east @ Aug 29th 2007 11:03PM
Please tell me it will support DVD ISO playback. I don't know much but I know about downloaded goodies ;)

Scaleo? Really? You are a multi-billion euro company and you go with "Scaleo"?
Throw some creatives a couple thousand and have them produce something that doesn't make you think it will grab your ankle and drag you into the backyard pool for a death roll.

getz76 @ Aug 30th 2007 12:25AM

I'm running Orb on my (1.7TB) WHS. It's cool being able to play all my content at home on the go with my 8525 phone.

anyone knows when Fujitsu isupdating their flagship business notebook S7110? Seems odd that they keep at this easily substituted hardware and not improving their core products.

Why hasn't anyone noticed that this is identical to the Velcoity Micro server?

I noticed. It's probably an ODM chassis made by Foxconn, Clevo, or any number of other Chinese manufacturers and available for private label branding.
