Sony has no more 60GB PS3s in its warehouses
It seems the unnecessary confusion surrounding the future of Sony's 60GB PlayStation 3 is finally ceasing, as Sony has now stated that it "no longer has any inventory in SCEA warehouses." Moreover, it was noted that all of the 60GB units "had been purchased and shipped to retailers," and while Sony doesn't know how many of those are on store shelves or waiting somewhere else in the supply channel, the firm estimates that there is still "ample supply left." So, we guess that settles it (hopefully for good, this time).

Wow, discontinued another PS3 model...
Then again, maybe they are doing something similar to car manufacturers. Release a new model every year, maybe that means you can trade in your 2006 model for a 2007 (aka 80gig). Or maybe you should wait for the 2008 model...
OK, to clarify, incase you are a total idiot.
It's not a new model. It plays the exwct same games as the next one (even PS2 games...)
Still times have really changed, when this is the best FUD Xbots can dig up.
Anyway, can't talk, off to play WarHawk.,..
Actually, new model number does mean new model.
New cars run on the same roads, are you saying the 20Gig the brief time it lasted, and the 60 gig where the same model just because they played the same games?
You can call me an xbot all you want, doesn't mean its true. Just because I find it humorous that Sony keeps discontinuing models of the PS3 doesn't mean I am one.
Why is it funny? I count 4 models of the 360. Core, Premium, Premium with HDMI, and Elite. 5 if you count the HALO 3 version. 6 if you count the Falcon.
this is a new model. the 60 gig had a ps2 board and the 80 don't, it uses a emulator like the european vesion.
THE 80GB UNITS WILL BE OUT BEFORE CHRISTMAS...........
When the Zephyr was still a rumor, sony fanbois cried "never before had we seen a console maker update their system "so radically" in its first year.... proof the 360 was rushed".
We've now seen 3 different models (or SKUs if you prefer) of the ps3, and 2 of them discontinued before the first anniversary.
Laugh Laugh Laugh.
What a sexy machine. Despite some bad press and endless fanboy flamewars, I have never felt buyers remorse.
Why would this comment get voted down? Because he enjoys something he spent his money on?
From what I understand, all you need to do to get the 80GB model is go and buy an 80GB 2.5" SATA drive. And voila, you have one for less than $80, tax included. Sure, the 80GB SKU comes with Motorstorm, but I wouldn't wan't that game for $20. I just don't find it that much fun. I don't if I'd buy it for $10, but that's probably just me.
Well, get ready for a halt in PS3 sales then.
Anyone that's thinking about waiting, don't. You can save $100 and get the 60 GB version, then upgrade the HDD later on for less than $100, plus have hardware backwards compatibility. Come holiday season when all the good games and blu-ray movies come out, you'll be glad you did.
about the hardware backwards compatibility, is it actually true that the 80GB version will be worse at playing PS2 games due to software emulation? thanks in advance.
There's been no definitive proof that Sony's software BC is lame at all. After all, the same technique is used by MS XB360 and the issue it had was that it was 100% compatible with all games, because they had to write code for each game supported. I think right now until it's settled, it'd be a safer bet to have the 60 GB model.
Correction: XB360's BC was NOT compatible with all XB games. Typo.
I would like to get one with the HW backwards compatibility for PS2, but still $500 for a system for like two games (I know more are in the pipeline), just is a hard pill to swallow
My 360, and its army of games, will beat up your PS3.
Have you lifted a PS3? I'm sure it'll beat up your 360 any day. Granted, you could use that huge power brick and HD-DVD drive like nunchucks to take out the PS3 from afar.
To be fair: At least there is no power brick and there is a built-in drive on the PS3, which is an immense space saver. They just need to get the exclusives out (FFXIII where are you?) and get the price down to a reasonable point ($349 is nice and the point I bought my 60GB at, but I used a credit card incentive).
I was totally kidding in my comment, though the bit about taking out the ps3 from afar with an hd-dvd/power brick nunchuck combo was hiliarious.
I actually do have a 360 and I bought it as opposed to the ps3 because it fits my tastes better. There will be no shortage of ps3 games in time, and I might just get one eventually since my 360 love is not mutually exclusive. The combination of HALO 3 coming out very shortly and the price drop was what swayed me toward the 360, but play on PS3 fans maybe I'll join your ranks someday.
@ Steve
So when is Apple going to release their own console?
Instead of a console we're planning on including DOOM in the first iPhone update.
I don't understand all the hoo-ha about having an external power brick. The original Xbox had an internal PSU and it got flamed for being too big because of it.
Xbox 360 decides to use an external power brick - which keeps the size of the main unit down/reduces heat inside the main unit/and improves service options.. and people still flame it.
The PS3 however uses an internal power brick - the main unit is enormous, and this doesn't seem to bother many people. It also does not seem to bother people from a service perspective..
ie. if the psu dies on a PS3, the whole unit has to go in for service. Whereas, if the PSU dies on the 360, it cannot blow up the rest of the main unit because it is separate, and only the PSU needs to be replaced - usually by post, or you can just buy a new power brick (so I'm led to believe).
thoughts??
I had just been thinking about the external (add-on) HD DVD drive for the 360 and if I had to go back and choose an external drive versus an internal drive (if one existed) I would have chosen the external. Here are three reasons:
1. Watching movies on a separate drive than the drive you use to play games with should technically increase the life of the drives.
2. Multi-platform, being able to hook it up to a PC.
3. Portability, being able to take it to a friends house etc...
I have a challenge. Who is "leet" enough to get the HD DVD add-on to work with a PS3? It uses USB. It should be possible right?
@CorPirate: I agree with you on the power brick. Mine sits right next to my 360 on the window sill and causes no problems. I suppose if I was anal enough to be bothered by its size and unsightlyness I'd sit it two feet lower behind my tv then BAM! its invisible.
Eric V: A perfect description of why the HD dvd add-on is a good thing, theres two more things I'd add though:
a. Since no format has been decided yet I'd rather not pay for either.
b. Its keeping the console price lower.
As far as the challenge, Ben Heck if you're out there this one is for you.
@corpirate
I think people would be okay with an external power brick but the 360's happens to be almost as large as the console itself. Given that many people recommend that this also be elevated, it becomes one of the biggest eye-sores in consumer product history. And replacement bricks are not readily available. You can get an aftermarket one for $100. Otherwise, you have to pay even more going through service. I never minded the larger console. What I hate are attachments and addons.
@CorPirate: I think the deal with the power brick has to do more with asthetics. The original Xbox was big and FUGLY, it looked like an old car audio amp. The PS3 pulls it off with its design, having more curves makes it easier on the eyes even though its huge.
I don't really mind the PSU, because you're going to have a cable coming out of the thing anyway, so it's not like it adds more wires or anything. As far as the external HDDVD drive is concerned, the PS2 was great with its built in DVD drive because DVD was THE format. But with all the blu-ray vs HDDVD crap going on, I'd rather not buy either until I know I'm not going to be regretting it in a year.
@primetime4
almost as large as the console itself?
the power brick is approx 1/4 to 1/3 the size of the console itself at the most.
I wonder how big the PS3 would be if the PSU was external.. interesting.
Not unless it's already been beaten up by the RROD.
I'm not worried about RROD, I bought the replacement plan at bby.
There are a few reasons to get a PS3 now. Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Plus, VF5 & Resistance aren't bad either.
Don't forget the non-physical games: Super Stardust HD, Blast Factor: Advanced Research, and flOw.
JET
I would agree if two of those three games didn't get somewhat beat up in early reviews (heavenly sword and warhawk). You should have also replaced Ninja Gaiden with Lair, as NGS is just a port of an xbox game and nothing really worthy of purchase unless you missed it the first time. Even Lair has gotten plenty of bad press though. Sony has pinned far too much on Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid. Other than Little Big Planet they don't have any big releases until q1 2008. With all the great games the 360 has coming out NOW, that's a LOoooong time to expect people to wait with a $600 console.
EGM and 1up.com just reviewed Heavenly Sword and Warhawk 8.5 and 9 average score respectively. I wouldn't call those bad scores. Just the opposite. www.gamerankings.com also shows many favorable reviews for those two games. And, Ninja Gaiden Sigma although a re-release is different enough (and good to boot) to stand on it's own. Also, if you want to compare game review scores, PS3 scores highest among all its games on average. Go here to see the scores: http://mysteriousgamer.1up.com
I just don't understand why ANYONE would buy a PS3 right now. I mean, the thing has like NO good exclusive games. Although Warhawk looks very good. in addition, EVERY SINGLE GAME that is on both systems is BETTER on the 360! (edit: except Tiger Woods 08 apparently b/c of wierd 360 crashing bug). See Madden 08 reviews for more info on this.
I know that the PS3 will eventually kick a lot of ass and have some great games, but the question remains: WHY WOULDN'T YOU JUST WAIT UNTIL THOSE GAMES COME OUT? I mean, by then (mid-2008), there could be another price drop (b/c of the decreased manufacturing costs of teh 80GB w/ emulator BC) and who knows what other incentives. Also, when you buy it in the future, the games will run at 60fps and might actually be BETTER than the 360 games.
I'm not a fanboy, I'm just a hardcore (read: 20-40 hours a week gaming) gamer who wants to play the best games NOW!
As soon as these great games come out for PS3, THEN I'll buy it, but there IS NO REASON TO BUY IT NOW!
Also, wtf is up with no voice chat in online PS3 games? I mean, SOCOM 1 for PS2 in like 2002 had voice chat. And yet, Warhawk is like the first game (def the first decent game) to include in-game voice chat. And how are people not MORE upset about this fact?
Even with the price drop it'll probably be over $400 or we might just get a 120GB PS3 with Warhawk for $600.00.
There are plenty of reasons to buy a PS3 now, just because YOU don't see them doesn't mean others don't. How about you grow up and get a real life. Maybe you'll start to notice there are others in this planet besides you that also have their own tastes.
I'm not as harcore gamer as you may be, but I've been playing video games since Pong, I've even designed and wrote some homebrew ones on my Comodore 64. Yet I would not buy a game system that did not offer as much or more than what the PS3 offers me now. Blu-ray movies for my HDTV, Music, Photo viewing, and web browsing are all added features that I really want in a game system because that makes it an "ENTERTAIMENT" system that can be shared with my wife and kids which are not really into video games at all. And all that is in a neat package, I dont have to worry about a dozen different attachments to give me all that.
if I want a computer, I'll buy one. I want to buy a GAME system b/c I want to play GAMES.
seems like people would buy the PS3 if it had toaster in it b/c its "added value".
Sony built one of the most impressive 3rd party libraries of all time with the PS2. They'll get there with the PS3 (I hope), but until then, I'll view photos and browse the web on my laptop and I'll listen to music on my stereo and mp3 player. I don't need a $600 paper weight to do those things for me.
Reliable Emulation = Another one bites the dust
You have utterly lost me, and that had absolutely nothing to do with my post.
Corpirate, having an external power brick just creates too much congestion behind my entertainment center. It's already hard enough to not create a rat's nest back there when you have power cables, speaker wires, video cables, audio cables, and coax cables. Have one less thing back there really does help.
If your power supply dies, there's a good chance it'll take out the rest of your system even if it's separate. The electrical damage done to a system is usually caused by spikes in voltages and current, not by heat. With the exception of a CPU or something similar where if you take the heatsink and fan off, yes it will burn up. Additionally if the PSU dies, true you just can't send in the PSU, but then again, you can't really use your system w/o it anyways, so what good does it do you if you don't have to take it in?

"If your power supply dies, there's a good chance it'll take out the rest of your system even if it's separate."
I disagree.. Having been repairing desktop computers for the last few years (for a living), I've found that it is quite rare for a failed PSU to damage any other components unless it has literally blown up. Perhaps 1 in 50 times would a failed PSU have spiked another component causing it to fail also.
All a company has to do to replace a failed external PSU is send a new one and provide return packaging.
To replace an internal PSU, the console will have to wait for packing materials to arrive, then get checked in at a repair center and wait in a queue until it can be repaired, often times behind other consoles with entirely different problems, which in turn can cause delays for the rest of the queue - it's unlikely that all the consoles in the repair center would require a new PSU - a fairly quick r epair I'm sure.
Besides, we are WAY off topic on this one.
I find it interesting nonetheless.
Geoffrey Sperl, FF13 and your beloved MGS4 will not save the PS3. A price drop wouldn't save it either. It offers no advantages over its competitors other than blu-ray, which might fall off the map if loses another studio. I say Sony if you wanna win you better be getting all your ducks in a row for the PS4 because you have lost this round.
oh just stfu.
Re: james
Quote: "EVERY SINGLE GAME that is on both systems is BETTER on the 360! "
Sorry, not true. Fight Night Round 3 (EA Sports) plays and looks better on PS3.
What are you talking about? Ps3 online games include voice chat and, even better, you don't need a proprietary headset to chat. Any bluetooth headset will work just fine.
And I can think of plenty of cross-platform games that are better on PS3 than 360: NBA 2K7 and The Darkness both have uncompressed 7.1 audio on PS3, Fight Night Round 3 and DIRT have better visuals. And the list of excellent exclusives is literally growing by the week.
I know, I know. I shouldn't feed the trolls
JET
I'm not a troll, you interwebz wannabe-elitist. I told you I'm a hardcore gamer and I want the console with the best games. As soon as that description fits the PS3, I'll buy it.
And no, DiRt isnt better and no one plays FN3. 90% of all dual-platform games are better on 360 and you KNOW THIS. This obviously won't be the case in the future when developers get a better handle on teh PS3 hardware, which is better than the 360s. once again, WHEN ALL OF THIS HAPPENS, I'll buy it. Until then, 360 only please.
James, the wheels on your tricycle are squeaking as you backpeddle.
I still play FN3!!!
You know it's ironic. I lean toward the PS3, will buy one ultimately, and usually am opinionated as such, but all of you are being unnecessarily biased toward James. He's not acting like a troll. He's not acting like a kid. He has very valid points. The game lineup stinks right now for the PS3, relative to the 360. It can't be disputed. That's why they aren't selling well. I'm also a person that loves the entertainment side of the PS3 too. But I can do the same thing now with my HTPC, high definition included. So, it really is excessive right now, and I for one am waiting to see what the incentives are in the future and perhaps firmware/hardware updates to the Blu-Ray drive. Cognitive dissonance really plays it toll on your l33t PS3 owners.
