You asked for it, you got it. Some sweet, sweet pics of the wild new 6 megapixel
Casio prototype. You know the one -- 60fps bursting at full resolution or 300fps VGA video? Believe it or not, the camera is surprisingly light, will use SDHC storage (which won't last long at these resolutions), and is expected to ship sometime in 2008. Hey, that's what they told us. Peep the gallery for all the hotness.

I want to play with this!

35mm film is now officially dead. It would take only 0.5s for the roll to be done. Wow.
Dan @ Aug 31st 2007 8:33AM
60fps is cool and all but why doesn't it have interchangeable lenses? I don't know any casual photographer who wants/needs 60fps from a still camera.
Jason @ Aug 31st 2007 8:43AM
60fps/300fps and mono sound? I only see one mic there...
I would dump my S2IS for a focus ring in a second if this offered stereo sound capture like my S2IS.

jeeze, guys - clean off the fingerprints off the buttons and the facegrease off the lcd before you take those pictures. yuk.

So I guess this uses Sony's 6-megapixel 60fps/300fps IMX017CQE sensor discussed on Engadget awhile back

Ah, this is going to be great for analyzing my golf swing!

Why is EXILIM written on that thing? that's not slim at all! haha
cool though :)
i've been looking for a higher-framerate digital camera for sports, martial arts, tricking and that type of stuff.
Wonder what the price will be.

that's a welcome idea in a market of "me-too" camera designs. 60 fps is way too much for still photography, but it would be great as a video camera. as camcorders nowadays are moving onto flash/HD storage, this might make a good alternative to a camcorder. that 300 fps sounds unreal, but if it were true, that would make awesome slo-mo footage.
it's of course vaporware at this stage, but still, way to go, casio!
TIMMAH! @ Aug 31st 2007 3:29PM
This is definitely the right direction. Take video at full camera res and then choose which frame you want. Never miss a shot again.

There's still a trade-off between framerate and colour depth. You get only 15 FPS if you need 12-bit output...
dan @ Aug 31st 2007 4:57PM
mother or pearl... thats insane. now looks like there is actually a need for 32gb SDHC cards now in digi cams.
Kuso @ Aug 31st 2007 6:00PM
No thanks, I'll stick with my S3 IS. Rotating LCD and the like.

The Sony chip (IMX017CQE) in this camera outputs at 384 megapixels per second and it's up to each manufacturer to decide which compression method to apply and what bitrate to compress it to. It'll be interesting to see the different choices. With quality (rather than ultra-portability) being the key feature of this chip, I hope we see those choices leaning towards hard disks and high bitrates (rather than flash and much lower bitrates). Hopefully Casio won't just compress it down to 12Mbps on flash and sell it to naive consumers impressed by a headline resolution...

When you have a 8 inch long .5inch diameter object (so you have to zoom way in to see it) lifting off at over 100g's TRUST ME 60fps MIGHT be just enough :-) I shoot rocketry. at 60fps I would not need 12mp 6mp zoomed in at 60fps would be VERY killer cool !!
I do not care how crappy its other features are. 6mp 60fps (as long as it can do it for AT LEAST 1.5 seconds ie 90 shots!!) and 300fps VGA rocks. that decent resolution for getting into low end high speed shooting !!! Imagine the FUN you could have at 300fps!!
60fps is also nice for FAMILY shooting. if you burst for 1 second you got 60 shots to pick from. ONE OF THEM will have everyone with there eyes open and all smiling :-) hehehe
I do not care how much space it takes. I already have many 2 and 4gig memory cards. I would GLADLY go get a new 16gb SHDC card for $320 to be able to have this kind of fun!!!!!
OH and its got to be affordable. if its $2k it might as well not exist (at least to me) PLEASE be under $700 !! PLEASE CASIO !!!
