Debunk: really bad iPod mockups abound
This is what passes for an iPod hoax these days? You may have seen the latest round of new iPod nano photos floating around the internets, but even if you wanted to ignore the fact that they look severely photoshopped (and we mean severely -- see the original hand outline?), you can't really ignore the fact that they seemed to show up first on the Flickr stream of a dude that seems to do little more than Apple product concept designs. Judge for yourself, but even though this may be what the next nano winds up looking like, we'd bet these aren't the first leaked shots of it.

matt.jancaitis @ Sep 3rd 2007 2:18AM
Man, no jokes, I hate you a lot. Well done.
iiviip3 @ Sep 3rd 2007 2:18AM
I don't get it. Apple always does design cycles with their products. Clearly now everything is taking on the brushed metal & black gloss look ala the iPhone. Look at the new iMacs and their keyboards. Wireless, thin, sleek -- these are words associated with their products. Who in their right mind buys this "squatty" version of the old product line? There is no chance...just no chance.
Sean DL @ Sep 3rd 2007 4:35PM
see the thing is Apple is going aluminum across the board, so it is happening, the thing is I'm sure Apple can do it sleeker then this....
dav @ Sep 3rd 2007 2:23AM
WAY better than the "leaked" pictures of the 3rd generation iPod Nano. This is actually quite a believable update to the current nano. i doubt Apple world ever release a video ipod looking nano, If they did it would be an update to the current video iPod and the iPhone looking iPod would be the fourth model - this makes sense!
ez17 @ Sep 3rd 2007 2:24AM
Wow that looks amazing! its making me want one now even though im in the market for a new video ipod.
Zach @ Sep 3rd 2007 3:00AM
Just wait for the 6G iPod to be unveiled this coming Wednesday.
LordFarkward @ Sep 3rd 2007 2:27AM
to everyone: please, please fight that urge to feed the troll. it isn't worth it, it really isn't.
waiownsyou @ Sep 3rd 2007 2:29AM
That mock-up actually looks (if it were real) like a sweet replacement for the Nano. Too bad the headphone connecting to the thing looks like a miniature tampon.
Bauer22 @ Sep 3rd 2007 9:14AM
Well it looks much better then that other spy picture.
LordFarkward @ Sep 3rd 2007 2:42AM
please excuse my n00biness, but honestly, how is this a 'really bad mockup'? i for one think that IF they make the whole background black (instead of uneven purple here and there) with just the hand and the 'ipod' it can actually be a pretty decent mockup, no?
Zach @ Sep 3rd 2007 3:00AM
It's a horrible mock-up to say the least.
A few quick observations. No solid background, definitely unApple like. The player itself is too squat and awkward to hold, leading to it being dropped too much. The hand itself is even a mess. You can see the outline. The pinky nail is uncut, meaning it stands out too much for a product ad. And the hand itself is too pudgy. Apple wouldn't let an ad be overtaken by such a fat hand.
The click wheel isn't entirely flush with the surface on the right side.
And while the cover-flow is believable, why is it a Beatles Album? We know that the Beatles have infamously refused to have a full catalog on iTunes. Perhaps, it's a possible sign? I don't know, we'll see in three days.
Phillip Donley @ Sep 3rd 2007 2:50AM
Fake or not, this looks great. The text would be a bit small, but I suppose that's the price you pay for wanting a small video screen.
Nathan @ Sep 3rd 2007 2:58AM
That hand is far too fat for Apple to use as a model. Where's David Duchovny when you need him?
proxy @ Sep 3rd 2007 3:13AM
Look familiar? Kinda?

Man I hope they don't go the Zen way and get rid of the main line. I want a fullscreen widescreen touchscreen ipod.... :( I want that big 4+ inch screen like the psp, except I want lots of storage. I won't buy psp slim if I'm happy at the end of Sept. 5.
Max Fun @ Sep 3rd 2007 5:05AM
I don't think Creative discontinued anything; just not yet updated. I won't be surprised if they are waiting to see what Apple has up its sleeves before coming out with a counterattack.
Rex @ Sep 3rd 2007 3:28AM
I would consider it a bad mockup based on what is shown on the display. No designer, in their right mind, would use miniscule font on such a small display. But overall, the photoshopped-ness of the hand the the "device" is really good.. minus the display, of course.
soul7963 @ Sep 3rd 2007 3:57AM
Has nobody noticed the odd black outline behind the hand? No idea what that is supposed to be!
Wwhat @ Sep 3rd 2007 7:00PM
Probably an edit of a zune shot :)
raj177 @ Sep 3rd 2007 3:58AM
awww the poor dude forgot to turn his screen brightness up :P
Max Fun @ Sep 3rd 2007 5:05AM
Even if this is how the new Nano will look like, with such a tiny screen, the Creative Zen will stomp all over it. I'd seen a demo model of the Zen, and the screen actually looks around the same size as my 5th gen iPod, or maybe just a tad smaller. Definitely alright for video podcasts and music videos. Too bad I've already invested in a few iPod accessories, so I can't switch so easily.
francesco @ Sep 3rd 2007 7:45AM
here ya go! the proof this guy is a [poor photo-retoucher.... look at all the crap in the background! He never finished drawing the new fake BG in! All one has to do is copy the image into photoshop and drop a contrast curve on the image to bring the truth to light. What a moron!

Enjoy!

Plenty of mockups on youtube.com, also. Some good, some bad. Wannabe designers with nothing better to do attracting wannabe iPod users with nothing better to do.
I'm willing to wait for the real deal on Wednesday (the new Tuesday).
Jimbo @ Sep 3rd 2007 9:59AM
It aint bad :/ ...id buy one. But I was rather hoping apple would bring out some new fresh and different! This is just a squashed iPod Nano 2nd Gen....:/!
Give us something new apple!!
Ant @ Sep 3rd 2007 10:09AM
I wonder whether a little bit of a treat to all the people that can't actually afford a new iPod, the iPod software update for the 5Gen will include coverflow. I'm sure it can be done. I don't think anybody will get the new iPod just for coverflow.
Jimbo @ Sep 3rd 2007 10:20AM
These would be really cool!!!

Since when has apple made an ipond with the headphone jack lopped onto one side. Its always in the center.
Nikita @ Sep 3rd 2007 12:49PM
first minis and then nanos and then the video ipods have had the headphone jack on the side.
Damien @ Sep 3rd 2007 11:09AM
invert the picture to really see the photoshoppery
(Mac users hit crtl + option + command and 8 all at the same time)
Bob Mc @ Sep 3rd 2007 11:43AM
That "fat" iPod doesn't look that fat...it looks phat.
Sorry.
Kal-El @ Sep 3rd 2007 12:06PM
So am I like, the ONLY person on this entire site who finds this attractive?
mrhammerstein @ Sep 3rd 2007 1:53PM
i hope this is fake. i'm getting really tired with apple putting the headphone jack on the bottom. just STOP IT!
Dukejl @ Sep 12th 2007 6:48PM
