First up in our
week o' Dell scoops: the fresh, well specced, webcam equipped SP2008WFP. Oh, and we should do the kind thing and dash your hopes right now instead of playing it -- the rest of our dell scoops are for systems, no phone, portable, or anything else is in the works (that we know of). Details:
- 20-inch display, 1680 x 1050 resolution
- 2ms, 300cd/m2 brightness, 2000:1 contrast ratio
- DVI with HDCP, VGA, (4) USB 2.0
- 2 megapixel still / VGA video webcam (fixed focus) with array microphone
- Optional soundbar
- September 12 release; sorry, we don't have a price
More shots after the break.
"DVI with DHCP, VGA, (4) USB 2.0"
Isn't DHCP for routers and HDCP for monitors? Am I missing something (it's quite possible).
i do believe you are correct, it seemed strange when i read it, but didn't really think about it.
My bad. HDCP (high def content protection) != DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol).
HDCP is actually 'High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection', not 'High Definition Copy Protection'
wow nice, hopefully they release a 24" just like it
Yeah definitely, got nice specs - but significant enough to bother upgrading from my current 20".
For a moment, I thought the webcam was housed in a giant grey box above the monitor, held up with two spindly blue sticks.
I need some sleep.
Lmfao
Now if only apple would release the cinema displays with integrated iSights.
so did I? It took me forever to realize its not some grey box on top, its the webcam zoomed in.
I'm guessing... a PC? a video camera? what is that?
ohhhh
you don't need sleep. It fooled me too. My first thought was, wtf were they thinking?
I was like...oh ya...remember when apple made fun of you a bit back.
Same here, I thought... Damn I know that dell took a swing at old soviet stylings somewhat but that's just... oh never mind it's not a huge box.
Too funny. I thought the same thing! WTF is with that HUGE webcam!
I thought the exact same thing!
Oh crap! Even I was fooled by this one. Engadget's Photoshoppin' skills have gotten pretty good!
*run's away from Adobe's lawyers*
Glad to know I'm not the only crazy one.
Grrr, I should be in bed...
At least none of us thought there was a large sphere with oversized USB ports jutting out the front.
Same here! Now that would be an awesome LCD/camera
LOL. That was my first impression too.
Whoever shopped the image needs to find a better profession because I thought it was a big ol' plastic box on top as well.
dell's monitors are all awesome!
I agree with you... I have a 20.1 and a 24" at home and they are great... but i think this monitor is unfortunately ugly! The integrated webcam is kind of cool, but it wouldn't be a deal maker or breaker for me.
PooMan misses his media card reader
Thats beautiful. Is that a tempered glass base like the 27"? I really like the design on the sides...very very nice!
What's the big thing about putting a camera in the display. I don't want a camera in the display. I don't want to pay for something I won't use (I'll get a better one). I don't want to pay for a camera that is pointing where the display is pointing (I'll get a separate one that I can point anywhere). I don't want to send my entire display in when the camera goes bad. And. So. On.....
So what if theres a camera in the display? Just becuase it's there doesn't mean you have to use it...duh.
Well i don't want an extra peripheral and extra usb cord hogging up my desk space.
what now?
@cjh6793 - go reread what yoshi wrote, you kinda missed the point.
@ zach - lol
@yoshi: The cost is either minimal, or nonexistent. My guess is it's a VGA webcam, which is worth, all of, what? $12? My bet is they added this feature while keeping the price the same, and wouldn't have lowered the price if they didn't.
@zach: If you buy this monitor, you will have a usb cable going there anyways, as it has a 4-port USB hub on the bottom/sides. Believe me, as I own an older 20-inch dell, having this hub is EXTREMELY useful. The side of the monitor is the perfect place for a hub. If you're THAT concerned about cables, then simply don't use ANY of it... Up to you.
@Kevlar: I think Zach was replying to yoshi, saying that he wouldn't want an external webcam taking up desk space and a USB port.
no more height adjustment
That's my biggest concern with every monitor, and I'm glad I got a dell monitor that has it. Having a height-adjustable monitor has done wonders for my posture in front of the computer. To all monitor manufacturers: please consider that there are people 6'5" tall when designing your monitor stands. Height-adjustment is a must.
Yeah, but the 2ms response time means that this display is a TN type. Which means that it can only display 267k colors w/o software of 16.2 million colors using dithering (not accurate) I'd rather stick with an ultrasharp display, plus I think those stand are better.
But then again I'm a photographer, so color counts vs. gamers who want the response times.
oops I meant to say or not of.
ehh
Seems about right to me.
Whoa, I replied to the wrong comment and I still got Highly Ranked...
That's cool, I just voted you down.
Thats a horrible resolution for a screen that size.
Uh, thats a standard resolution for a screen that size.
I have a couple of 20.1" BenQs on my desk at work with the same resolution, and it is fine. Going much higher would make things start to get kind of small to view at a comfortable distance. I run my 15.4" laptop at 1680x1050 as well, but that's much closer to me as it is a laptop.
Wow next time call me for a Photoshop "zoom" effect, at first I thought this was a joke and the camera actually looked like a brick with a tripod on top of the monitor.
I actually would like to see those cameras to have a tilting ability like Sony webcams on some of their notebook computers.
that does look pretty awesome. Then again, dell make good monitors
hmm... so how do we enter the contest for this beauty?
There is no contest for this :\
What I don't get, is why there is a normal 3 pin 'kettle' lead as well as a small circular power plug. ??
Any ideas?
the small circular power plug powers the optional soundbar that can be attached to the bottom of the display.
Hell no! You just need to paste a laptop to the back to make that an iMac! Fixed cameras aren't cool or functional!
Why no love for WUXGA?
