Apple announces new 3rd gen iPod nano
El-Jobso just dropped news that the whole iPod lineup is getting a refresh or replace -- including the nano. Apparently those "spy photos" weren't too far off, as the new nanos look almost identical to the stout, squat player we've come to know and love. The new units will include 2-inch, QVGA, 320 x 240 screens that are 65-percent brighter than previous models and have the highest pixel density the company has ever shipped (204 pixels per inch). In addition to the new screens, the extra-wide player will sport an "enhanced" UI (which looks a lot like the video we saw recently) and its own version of Cover Flow. The nano will come bundled with three games, including a circular-Arkanoid rip-off called Vortex, and apparently you'll be able to purchase more from the iTunes store. The player's battery life has also been extended, with Apple touting 24 hours of playback for audio, and 5 hours for video. The 4GB model will be selling for $149, though it's only available in silver, while the rainbow-colored 8GB will leave you $199 lighter in the wallet. Both models will be in stores "by this weekend."

Ugly but practical, so all is well. They've hit the inevitable nano design trap- people want a larger screen than that of the old nanos attached to a player that is smaller than the old nanos. A touch screen was a bit too much to hope for in this update.
I couldn't care the least about the new Nano, but look at the pics, Jobs is getting fat. Mind you I don't care about that either.
haha, the new creative zen DESTROYS this hideous thing in practically every way.
which 1? lol because the old 1's destroy it in alot of ways.
apple, get with it. music and video/photo isnt everything... you require MORE features.
cnet says 6 out of 10 people free the zune for sound quality. my god, what would those numbers be like when compared to a cowon product? 1 to 9 with cowon blazing a path to glory?
i have a 8gig iaudio7, and it does what this does, with a smaller screen, most likely better resolution and tons more features... including radio with voice/radio/in-line recording.
IVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR THIS!!!!
oh and i have to agree with Alan Partridge
The nano used to be the sexiest player out there. Personally, I actually preferred the original 1G nano to the rounded-metal-case 2G ones, but the sexiness was still there.
This 3G one almost looks like a toy.
It is uglier than the old nano... but it's a far better deal.
yes it seems to scream "deck of cards" to me.
a video playing nano! for $199!
roll on christmas!
no 16GB??? Lame....Apple fails with this stillbirth. One thing that was good about the iPod - flash or HDD - was Apple's ability to introduce higher capacities at lower prices, which was easy for them to do with their market domination. They just made the better contract deals with memory makers at record volume price points. Something that other, smaller DAP makers could not do. But it was still a positive for the consumer, even the ones that didn't like the iPod, because it helped drive down prices and allowed for ever increasing capacities.
I haven't seen Apple trumped on the basics since Creative's Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra.
Apple HAS to give a 16GB Nano. They just HAVE to.....
The Creative Zen is VERY nice, but I wish they made it as thin and sexy as the 2g Nano.
Also, would it have hurt to put in bluetooth 2.0 in the new nano?
I think some consumers looking for an iPod Nano will look elsewhere now. The new players from Creative and especially Samsung blow away this new Nano in design and features.
I think Samsung has the muscle to make a serious run at at Apple's market share.
Don't forget the new flash Zune that is theoretically due out later this year. If they keep the same general dimensions of the original zune but shrink it down it would obviously be much more eye catching than this thing, and probably still offer up an FM tuner and some useless form of wifi :P This might be what MS has been hoping for, a real in road.
still at 8gb? what morons
This is what EGM (electronic gaming monthly,) GFW (games for windows)and 1UP.com has been waiting for. We're all planning on buying it this weekend. Looking forward to seeing it in person.
u no what sucks? i have the red nano and now i want the new red nano just cuz of all the stuff it does now. but dont get me wrong, i love my current one, but sadly im always looking and buying the lastest and greatest new gadgets....even if its stubby and fat
rainbow colored ipods?!? that is so gay!
Vortex was a launch title for iPod gaming. I don't believe that nobody at Engadget has heard of it yet.
My own personal cycle of grief with the Fat nano: (1) that thing sure is ugly; what's the point --> (2) it's still kind of ugly, but still pocketable, and probably 16 GB, so OK --> (3) only 8 GB? What's the point? My initial reaction to the leaked photo turns out to be my final reaction. Apple changed the form factor in order to add functionality that no one buying a nano wants, in the same capacity that was already available. Why? I was all set to upgrade, but now I probably won't. My 1G nano is better. And the iPod Classic and Touch don't appeal to me - I don't want to watch videos on a itty bitty screen. I want something comfortable to wear on the bike or at the gym.
This new iPod is hideous, but if any of you think apple is going to go through any setbacks because of this you're kidding yourselves.
Apple's iTunes has locked a LOT of people into iPods forever.
The iPod is the "IT" toy every year for adults and kids. You think kids ages 10-18 look at specs and compare prices? You underestimate the amount of people that can actually understand and care about features that Apple doesn't offer.
Apple's marketing has brainwashed too many people. Apple has a vice grip on the Digital Player market that won't be relinquished any time soon.
Exactly right. I'm guessing most high school, middle school, elementary school? kids would get ridiculed for having something other than an ipod.
I guess you meant "overestimate". But yeah, it's so true. For the millions of kids, like with everything else nowadays, it's not about features or value, it's about style, coolness, having a status symbol and being fashionable. My little bro works at Staples and numerous times, a moron comes in and asks for an iPod but have not freaking idea who it looks like or how it works ("what is MP3?"). It's absolutely insane how the "iPod idea" is imprinted in people's consciousness.
it's a Dell Axim 51V reincarnated!
What is it made out of? Is it the nice aluminum like the 2nd gen Nano? I like it because it doesn't scratch as easily and doesn't smudge up in 1 second of use.
I've never been a "Chubby Chaser", but I might go for this one!
Well i like the features but i don't see why apple is just making them smaller and smaller...This is by far the worst ipod i've ever seen. Honestly...i like the touch one. And that 160 gig ipod...jeez.
What's going to happen with Apple's relationship with Nike and the Nike+ running line of products? With a new form factor, it renders all the current Nike+ clothing and accessories obsolete. Is the dock connector compatible with previous Nano generations?
This does look pretty sweet.
It looks like one of those 'pagers' people used to wear on their belt.
Wow my first gen nano is still rockin' it's killer good looks. For once, I think I can say apple hasn't made me envious of the new version of something.
Are you all serious? It's 6mm thin! The color options are weak besides black. But 6mm!? It's gonna be surprisingly nice when in the hand. Chill.
That's it.
The MP3 war goes to Creative now.
(If iPod nano's design does not improve, I doubt it will do well compared to its predecessors.)
I knew it! the iFat Nano leaked photos were real!!!!
is any one gonna buy it though? i mean every teenager has some sort of music plaer and most were content with the old nano .or am i wrong? i see so many put downs with this ipod . will it flop? wait.. apple fanboys will buy anything with an apple logo!
Let me clarify this for the idiots out there:
The new Nano is for people who have the old iPod nano and want to upgrade to video without losing the smaller size. I'm one of those people. I sold my iPod video because it was not convenient to carry around all the time. The nano fits in my wallet, and I have it whenever I want it. This would give me all the features of the nano I already own, plus more space and video.
The touch is for people who want a wifi iPod and widescreen video. It's not meant to carry your whole library at this point. It's meant to be a load-and-go player. You pop a movie or playlist on it before your commute, and you're good for the day.
The classic is the standard "I want to carry my entire music and video library in my baggy jeans pocket or backpack" device. I don't need to carry that much music myself, because I figured out that I would never have the opportunity to listen to all of it in the short times I'm away from my computer. Some people want their iPod to be a portable music library--- A lot of people don't, though.
I'd probably upgrade from my nano to the touch if I were 100% certain it could take being in my pocket without being all scratched up. I like the wifi ability. I'm all over that. I just can't see how a device that's all screen is going to be convenient to carry around without babying it. With my nano, I don't even use a case. I just stick it in a pocket or in my money/card holder (wallet, basically) and I'm good. It's always ready to use.
And I also worry about battery life on the touch. It's a bit of a power hog, I'd imagine.
Sweet. I like the wider ratio proportions. It's definitely different from the normal iPod look. I'm not a huge fan of the iPod, mainly because of the price, but this one does intrigue me.
That is the fugliest thing that Apple has released in awhile.
Seriously. And the new colors are hideous. How in the world will large adult hands be able to handle something that tiny? And who wants a seafoam green iPod? And watching videos on a screen that tiny? Plz. The 3G nano would have been better if they'd made the screen longer (so you can see more of your playlists or whatever at one time) and kept the dimensions, the brushed metal, and the colors the same.
Just another reason why I really hate Apple...
This is horrible, it even makes appreciate my second gen 8b nano waayy more, i was looking forward to some nanos with 16 gb and same slick full metal case design, and what i get is THIS ?

To all who are very dissappointed with the new ipod nano,
maybe because of the PRICE!!!!coz' the new one is very cheap compare to the old Nano 4GB also hehehehehe....
Sorry... guyz
I got a 2nd gen nano about a month before the 3rd gen came out and at first I was disappointed. Having given it some thought, I think the 2nd gen is as perfect a device as can be. It's shape and size is a big part of it's perfection. The 3rd gen looses that, and I really think Apple only added the big screen so they could make more $$$ selling content like games and video. I'm all about the music, not the other stuff.... so, very happy I got one of the last 2G's.
I really don't like the new ipod nano colors..:(
i like to purple one that they have for shuffle tho.. like this one http://www.poppik.com/Apple-1-GB-iPod-Shuffle-Purple-3rd-Generation-Apple-133140.aspx
The 3g doesnt look "sexy" but it does have a strong "cuteness" factor, even when you hold them they are just so tiny and, well, cute.
