Apple's new iPod classic
Apple today announced the latest in its kind-of-sort-of successful iPod line, the sixth generation iPod "classic." Like the brand new iPod nano, the flagship iPod is also sporting an all-new interface, headlined by Cover Flow. The iPod comes in 80GB and 160GB capacities, with 30 hours of battery for audio playback, 6 hours of video on the 80GB version, and 40 hours / 7 hours for the 160GB unit. In addition to the new interface, the iPod classic is getting a new all-metal shell, and is selling at $249 for the 80 gigger, $349 for 160. You can order one today, and they should be hitting stores by the weekend.

I will openly ridicule anyone who buys the touch screen version over either of these.

Goddamn it Apple fucks up again. I was ready to go out and buy the iPodtouch to replace my Mini but now it only has 16gb of storage. What the fuck is the point. If they combined this ipod's harddrive with the touch then I would buy it but this blows. What's the point of having flash? Sure you can make it smaller and there are no moving parts but anyone's who's actually used an ipod know that moving parts don't make a fucking difference. You can do whatever the fuck you want without it skipping. And if you are that paranoid that your music will skip while jogging then go out and buy a $30 player to jog and you can have a decent sized harddrive to keep your music on.
I don't get what the big deal with all these flash video players are. There's no point since you can't actually store enough movies on them.
All I want is an ipod with a touch screen that can hold my music library and a couple of videos. That is not too much to ask.
And engadget, flash is only good for small amounts of memory not large amounts like you would want in an ipod so wake up and realize that until they cna make 100gb+ amounts of flash memory affordable leave it to memory sticks and ipod shuffles/nanos.
bobblender @ Sep 5th 2007 5:25PM
^^ to above poster: flash is less likely to break. when you move an ipod with a HDD around, you are making it more prone to HDD failure; not so with flash.
Edward Hyena @ Sep 6th 2007 6:08AM
Once true, but the way the iPods work, as I understand it, the hard drive isn't constantly running. It will just load 64 MB - 128 MB (I can't remember the number) into memory and play off of flash then. This is why the battery life drops drastically if you just hold the skip button.
maveric101 @ Sep 5th 2007 9:48PM
^^ to above poster: so what? you get a new ipod under you're warranty, and just re-download from itunes.
Philometalist @ Sep 6th 2007 1:30PM
Flash is an SSD, meaning it has no moving parts, which means nothing to get knocked out of alignment when you drop your new $400 dollar ipod. Also, flash media has a much longer read/write life-span. Meaning the ipod touch will still be transferring/accessing data by the time the ipod classic becomes a doorstop. ;)

Justin @ Sep 5th 2007 1:25PM
Too bad this article won't be about the Nano at all. If Creative releases a new HDD-based player, then you might have a point.
anewsome @ Sep 5th 2007 1:30PM
Here's a list of things the Zen doesn't have:
A ridiculous amount of third party accesories, iTunes integrations and dock connectors to plug into in my car, my house, my portable video player,.. and, well, EVERYWHERE!
riggs @ Sep 5th 2007 1:34PM
you say itunes integration like its a good thing
Who? @ Sep 5th 2007 1:38PM
Don't forget FM radio, too.
p-diddy @ Sep 5th 2007 2:00PM
OK, for most portable electronics an SD slot is necessary. Please enlighten all of us what you would do with 8 gigs of SD memory, if that, when you have 20x that already inside the device.

@ anewsome
yea, a ton of 3rd part accessories just like all the peopl who go down to autozone to buy 5in round muffle extension tips to make their 4 cylinder lawn mower sound like it actually makes more then 150 horse power.
some times accessories is a bad thing, ever seen some the people in schools these days? i saw a girl wear 2 belts the other day, and they werent even through the loops, now i know thats about image, but it serves no point at all except for me to be like wow, you dressed up like that to look cool? how influenced are you going to be at the age of 21 after a few drinks
Sean @ Sep 5th 2007 2:31PM
Heh, nice try. Too bad you just copied and pasted this comment from the nano thread. Take your trolling elsewhere, troll.
Jeff @ Sep 5th 2007 3:00PM
List of things this has that the Zen doesn't:
160GB
Game over.
Jules Morgan @ Sep 5th 2007 3:38PM
Haha who cares where this came from - this is the best 'Reply to this if you're an iPod fanboy' post.
lol @ the 'better accessories' or 'I need 160GB' replies. I think they say it all.
Chris R @ Sep 5th 2007 8:27PM
lol @ the 'better accessories' ?
Why? Dont see ANY other music player from Creative, Arcos, Samsung, Sony or any other of the so called big players in this market which I can control from my car headunit. No need to mess about fiddling with a second device, you just plug in the ipod, stick it in the glovebox and it works the same as a cd changer or Mp3 CDR. It charges it, it controls it. The best that you can hope for on other players is input via the headphone socket to a couple of aux inputs, a crappy FM transmitter or a shoddy tape interface, all of which need you to manipulate the device itself to navigate track selections.
I see manufacturers like Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer, even SONY have a proper Ipod interface. Sony dont even have any integration between their very own products and their music players, so if that is the result of better accessories, then bring it on.
hydrogen_wv @ Sep 5th 2007 5:24PM
Rock on Alan.
I'm glad there are some other Creative fans around here. As far as 3rd party accessories go, for $10 on eBay I bought an 11 accessory bundle for my Creative Vision:m. It has everything I need.
As far as in-car use, for the extra price I would have had to pay for an iPod, I could buy a cheap LCD screen and have the output on the Vision:m on a 7" screen controlled by a wireless remote. Cheaper than paying the premium for iPod compatibility....
I've used quite a few Creative products, and I've dabbled with some iPods, and the Creative products are far superior, imho. Sure, the iPod is dumbed down so any 2-belt wearing ditz that doesn't understand the point of belt loops can use it. I don't need that. I need features. And Creative products are packed with features.
Oh, and iTunes integration is not a perk. It's a pain in the ass, especially if you don't want all of your music on your device. Give me the good old drag and drop, and forget iTunes.
Andrew @ Sep 5th 2007 1:22PM
Nice.
I.E @ Sep 5th 2007 1:25PM
what's nice? nothing has even been announced yet.

Holy crap, man! Engadget is probably getting flooded with so much traffic as the pages are loading s-l-o-w..
Jonathan @ Sep 5th 2007 1:26PM
Brilliant! Apple haven't even announced it yet but engadget are obviously so certain or have already had a tip they can't reveal, that they've stuck the post up ready! Mind you, the "fatty" prediction was spot on...
Al @ Sep 5th 2007 1:26PM
This one showed up in the podcast feed and got my hopes up.
So sad.
Nick Bee @ Sep 5th 2007 1:27PM
Erm, are we supposed to see this page yet?
eEZER @ Sep 5th 2007 1:28PM
Wow, a new revolution! I'm urging everyone to buy one. Apple need our support.
indyshadow @ Sep 5th 2007 1:28PM
OK I cant wait to see pics. of this. I have been holding out on the new Archos 605WIFI which is totally cool and my friend got it before me so this better be worth waiting for.
LiQuiD_FuSioN @ Sep 5th 2007 1:31PM
Here it comes, guys (as the news develops)! I can't believe how excited I am, almost like a kid in a candy store. Or perhaps a kid waking up to see a bunch of Xmas presents under a tree. I know I sound utterly ridiculous, but I can't help it! ;)

Brian @ Sep 5th 2007 1:32PM
The word "classic" means there's also a touch screen iPod coming IMO.
pumapunt @ Sep 5th 2007 1:36PM
think it's 40 hours of audio and 7 of video for the 160gb version
Mike @ Sep 5th 2007 1:37PM
160 gigs? Impressive, but I'm sure the price tag will be too.
kai @ Sep 5th 2007 1:37PM

scroll wheel for the lose.
Jen @ Sep 5th 2007 1:39PM
Any word on an integrated FM tuner so I don't have to shell out another fifty bucks for something that comes standard on virtually every other mp3 player on the market?
Phillip Black @ Sep 5th 2007 3:59PM
Heck, it even comes with the Zune and when you don't have something the Zune does you know you suck!
stephen @ Sep 5th 2007 1:41PM
oh balls, no they didn't. I'm an apple hater by nature, but having a 160gb music player is just sextastic!
looks like i'll get one of these unless zune releases something 120gb+
jessy @ Sep 5th 2007 2:00PM
i guess having your major computer competitor enter into the mix and throw out like 5 more features that are frequently used means you have to step up the capacity and price war.
it just feels desperate... kind of like how dodge cars feel today.
Jen @ Sep 5th 2007 1:48PM
And how about some colors with the all new metal casings. Thanks.
caz @ Sep 5th 2007 1:48PM
