Intel previewed its quad-core Tigerton processor
way back in October of last year, but the company has just now let all that server-specific power loose on the general populace, with a couple of slightly scaled back versions also thrown in for good measure. Likely to attract the most interest, however, is the top-end X7350 processor, which clocks in at 2.93GHz with 8MB of shared on-chip cache and a thermal design power rating (otherwise known as TDP) of 130 watts.Rounding out the quad-core line-up are the 2.4GHz E7340, the 2.13GHz E7320, and the 1.6GHz E7310, each of which boast a TDP of 80 watts, as well as the 1.86GHz L7345, which drops the TDP back to 50 watts. If that's all a bit too much for you, Intel's also rolled out two dual-core Tigertons, including 2.93GHz E7220 and the 2.4GHz E7210, each of which have a TDP of 80 watts and 8MB of shared on-chip cache. Look for these to set you (or your company) back anywhere from $856 to $2,301 per chip, in 1,000-unit quantities, that is.
How is this an improvement over clovertown?
Clovertown is only for dual-processor servers. I think this is for 4+ socket configurations.
The 7xxx series CPUs are for more than 2-CPU servers. Until tigerton, if you wanted a 4+ CPU system, you were still using Netburst based Xeons. Yuck.
I didn't know the Transformers ran on Intel's
^^^LMMFAO!!!!!!!!!
I was thinking that Hasbro Owned the right to "Tigerton"........lol
You mean Beast Wars: Transformers?
How is "Tigerton" have any relation to Transformers? I can understand if it was Tigertron with an "r".
lol@Tigerton
I'm personally waiting for the reggaeton! It's gonna smoke!
Do these consume less power? Seriously, I want a powerful processor that doesn't need an oversized heat sink.
Name derived from Tigard & Beaverton? Two cities near Intel's Oregon plants (Previously used "Tualatin" being the town next to Tigard)
Better than Beavergard I guess.
Copy right only pertains to the product, eg no one else can make a toy called tigeron, but a processor is totally different to a toy. But, "yes" transformers run on intel.
the last mimzy runs on Intel... Hmm...
They’re Grrreat!
These going to find a home in the forthcoming MacPro rev?
cool
Gosh dang it, I don't want 4 cisc cores, I want a 256 core risc co processor...
I may have to wait a few years for things to come to where they need to be...
I want the same thing too.
And you know what? I'm going to play Solitaire on mine when it comes out.
Holy crap! They have a version of solitaire that uses ray tracing and soft body dynamics?
Sounds exciting. I suppose once you have your own corner of the matrix up you can do what you please. I intend to have a war with mutants, aliens, and haywire proprietary software with android peripheral sets.
I plan to study the physics of farts.
So when are the Quad cores going to hit laptops? Alienware has said 2008... with price drops etc... anyone know the real deal with this?
Great, I can't wait for the Core2Duo firesale once these Quad cores start rolling out.
