Sony's PSP slim hitting stores... today?
Sony's been none to clear about a launch date for the new PSP-2000 "slim" PSP, but really there's no better time than the present to get your slim on, and Sony just announced that its new PSP is available today. Coming in silver, as part of a $200 "Entertainment Pack" alongside Daxter, Family Guy and a 1GB Memory Stick, the new PSP should be hanging out at most major retailers by the time you read this, though you might want to call around a bit just to be sure.

I'd like to pick one up however the following say "you might want to wait a little"
-money for grad school apps
-money for textbooks
-money for ps3 games
Oh well, guess I'll just have to do really well in grad school to make sure I get an awesome job to make sure I don't miss any more games :D

As an employee at my local Best Buy, I just put them on the shelves after telling customers about the new upgrade.
This website keeps me informed before our corp. gets wind of cool new gaming gadgets, lol.
(Nobody believed me when I came in waving print outs of the Xbox Messenger kit 3 months ago...)
We put it on the shelf for 199.99 I think... I'm too lazy to check.
Manuel @ Sep 5th 2007 10:52PM
such a sad life
xVortex44x @ Sep 5th 2007 11:34PM
yet your trolling on engadget is not?
blackeagle @ Sep 5th 2007 7:02PM
nice deal if you don't already have a psp
Kaemon @ Sep 5th 2007 7:07PM
Now if Pandora worked on it, I would be all for it. Haha. But alas, I have no interest in something I cant mess with.
Johan S @ Sep 5th 2007 7:08PM
The thing is unnecessarily wider that it has to be (they can make it less wide without shrinking the LCD by getting rid of the margin space). Also, why they hell havent they bumped up the screen's resolution to 1024 pixel width or higher yet? Sanyo/Epson has already demonstrated a 500 pixels per inch display, and Samsung etc. have shown 400 ppi LCD's (the iPhone's is only 160).
The next PSP better have a 1024+ pixel width touchscreen LCD + GPS .. minimum.
Otherwise I am writing a letter to Steve Jobs to enter the gaming business in full force.
Fruition @ Sep 5th 2007 7:23PM
... Was that an attempt at sarcasm? If it was, I commend your attempt, but you need more practice, sir.
If you weren't being sarcastic... Just wow.
Mitch R. @ Sep 5th 2007 7:22PM
And cost $800? No thanks.
You don't need a super high-res screens on a portable device. Just make it so it can output 720p to an external display when needed.
Fruition @ Sep 5th 2007 7:30PM
Mitch brings up price and that's a good point, but more importantly, unless the PSP uses some miracle GPU, it probably can't handle a higher resolution, or if it can, the framerate will plummet.
Unless of course, it just stretches the game image over the new screen size, making it look blurry as any PC gamer knows when they try playing a game on a resolution other than their LCD's native one.
Furthermore, this device really only had small advancements, to kind of compete with the DS Lite. It wasn't meant to be an entirely new system.
Ryan Smith @ Sep 5th 2007 7:09PM
Wow, I think the PSP is dead as far as video and music playback. Sony keeps pushing it as everything but a game machine, but there is no way it can compete with the new Ipod. I really wish they would focus on the games.
Bryan @ Sep 5th 2007 7:14PM
This thing is still around?
Mike @ Sep 5th 2007 7:26PM
Yes it's still around w/ a solid 25 million sold strong. Sure it's not the DS w/ 45 million sold but it's not like it's a failure. I consider that good considering Nintendo has outright owned the handheld business forever w/ no competition. The PSP is a good first plunge into the market.
Sean DL @ Sep 5th 2007 8:44PM
That's some good spin Mike, Sony should hire you.
To Sony it is a failure. So don't be surprise if this is Sony first and last handheld.....Which is a shame, but they needed this kick in the butt after bring out a 500 dollar gaming machine.
Funpolice @ Sep 5th 2007 7:27PM
Cool I'll be getting this.
caramelzappa @ Sep 5th 2007 7:28PM
The psp is a really nice device. I've always wanted one, but there are not enough good games for it to justify it's price.
luidabruin @ Sep 5th 2007 8:50PM
are you kidding?
how about playing all PS, PS2, gameboy, NES, nintendo64, and many other classic titles?
just a 'lil sumthin, sumthin call HOMEBREW!
caramelzappa @ Sep 5th 2007 10:58PM
Half of those games experiances would be ruined by the psp's shitty excuse for a joystick, and the other half can be emulated on plenty of other cheaper platforms. Hell, half of them are available for homebrew on the DS, which is loads cheaper. I've always loved the homebrew community, but I'd think of it as an extra perk, not the reason why I put down $170 for a device.
abishai @ Sep 5th 2007 7:30PM
May have to grab one of these.
Philip @ Sep 5th 2007 7:36PM
i dont know about this i got the gameinformer and it states that the psp silver one is due on the 9th
Rick @ Sep 5th 2007 7:45PM
I have 2 PSPs and there just isn't enough of a compleling reason to upgrade. I like my PSPs and use them every day to stream my favorite podcasts of watch a movie in the car on the way home from work (yes I can drive and watch at the same time!)
But now that the all the wanabes are done in the iPod threads the loosers will be in here complaining that the new PSP doesn't come in pink. Even if it does come in pink you're still not getting one because you don't have any MONEY.
devwild @ Sep 5th 2007 7:52PM
No, you cannot watch and drive at the same time. Stop fooling yourself and endangering the lives of everyone on the road.
caramelzappa @ Sep 5th 2007 8:01PM
I hope to god you're joking because whoever you hit is not going to deserve the consequences of your retardation if you're serious.
Rick @ Sep 5th 2007 8:52PM
YHBT
Idiots!
caramelzappa @ Sep 5th 2007 10:59PM
Thank god.

jmskorben @ Sep 5th 2007 7:51PM
i heard you can download ps-one games, but you need a PS3 to do it. If i can do it without a PS-3 ill go grab one. Anyone know?
Bullitt @ Sep 5th 2007 7:58PM
Still haven't move the analong stick
Sean DL @ Sep 5th 2007 8:03PM
Oh, BTW, I find it humorous that both Apple and Sony went with silver metallic.
moe @ Sep 5th 2007 8:14PM
if this is 200.oo i would assume there may be a price cut of the original.
Sean DL @ Sep 5th 2007 8:45PM
Yeah..$179...
Drew @ Sep 5th 2007 8:26PM
If the slim PSP is harder to hack then I would never buy it. I already own two and will probably be selling one. If you haven't hacked your PSP yet, I would, it's easy and gives a whole new use to your PSP (my apologies for being a bit off topic).
Markp @ Sep 5th 2007 8:45PM
Any idea when its out in the UK/Europe?
Z @ Sep 5th 2007 9:44PM
That depends on what colour you are looking for. The black one comes out on the 14th, where as the white and silver ones do not have a release date yet.
p.s SCEE announced that they are releasing ALL psp lite colours on the 5th sep. here in uk, but that never happened.
Lou @ Sep 5th 2007 9:56PM
The slim PSP pack has been available at future shop in canada (well at least my local future shop) for a good couple days. i might be behind on my news, but should that have been like that?
Fat Cartman @ Sep 6th 2007 2:05AM
IMHO, releasing updated version of a handheld is a pretty good business strategy in bringing a bit more life to console's sales. Nintendo does this all the time, and Apple too. Plus, Sony might have struck new deals with their supplier. Better deals. So it make sense to update the PSP. If you are a new customer, faced with an option of buying a $179 PSP phat, and $200 PSP lite (psp-2000), which one will u go for? even if they look almost the same, plays exactly the same, as a customer, you'll never choose an old version over a new version to save $21!!
As a gaming device, I think the PSP is a great machine. I own a NDS, and dont get me wrong. I played my DS daily, with lots of love. But I'm constantly checking new PSP games, and everytime, I am envious with the graphical quality of their release. There are games that I would like to play, if I have the money and time.
Mihai @ Sep 6th 2007 4:32AM
I've got mine yesterday in Belgium (the piano black one). 169.9 EUR, but no bundle, no demo UMD disc, not even an small memory stick.
Henri @ Sep 6th 2007 6:10AM
PSP-2000 ... is it just me or is that name really oldschool?
Jonathan @ Sep 6th 2007 11:58AM
Just picked mine up half an hour ago. Still charging, unfortunately...
box @ Sep 6th 2007 3:51PM
Great news. I'm finally getting one as I have sat on the fence far too long. Just bring out the GPS functionality already so I don't have to drop 500 on a Garmin.
Tim @ Sep 6th 2007 5:58PM
For the person that wanted to know if you could download psone games for playing on your psp with a ps3.. yes you can do it on the playstation store.. however.. as of yet there are only a few playstation games up available for downloading.. and they cost money.. like up to 10 dollars for some games I think..
Constable Odo @ Sep 8th 2007 10:35AM
I'm sorely tempted to purchase the PSP Slim, but it seems wasteful to buy games for it and for a PS3. I've been holding off buying the PS3 because I really just want it to play Gran Turismo 5 when it comes out in October. I do see one other game I'd like which is Need For Speed Carbon. Yet if I bought NFSC for the PSP Slim, I'd probably want to repurchase it for the PS3. I wish the games were transferrable from one format to the other or they gave some sort of discount if you buy both formats. It's very difficult to make these decisions with so many great devices to choose from.
