Wow, the Dell XPS M1730 isn't even out yet and already we've got
even more pictures of the laptop all splayed open. We're a little worried about that drive-on-drive configuration they've got going on, but if you were curious to check out more of the intricacies of the M1730's chassis, both internal and external, here's your shot. Of course, there's nothing more we can tell you in terms of the specs this laptop's going to have,
every single detail is already out there. All we can do is wonder what it's going to cost and whether they'll keep that September 21st launch date.

I thought it was ugly enough even without being opened up. Do they even know about something called Aesthetics?

I've been a longtime Dell buyer and I thought all those leaked shots of the M1730 were just some bad mock ups, and that Dell would surprise us all with a laptop resembling the m1330's styling.
But now I'm convinced that's not going to happen.
So all I have to say is...
DAMN! THAT'S ONE FUGLY LAPTOP!
Peace out Dell, it was nice while it lasted. But you officially SUCK A$$ at designing now!
Jon @ Sep 6th 2007 10:45PM
This laptop looks soooo ugly to me. Granted taste varies from one person to another, but specs aside the red and gloss and carbon texture look like crap together.
John @ Sep 6th 2007 11:04PM
There are plenty of heavy duty laptops out that are ugly.
They should have made one more like the 1330.
Hivez @ Sep 6th 2007 11:24PM
anyone know if this will have available the turbo cache?
garver @ Sep 6th 2007 11:33PM
I could care less how it looks as long as it has the specs I need at a great price. If I wanted looks Id go with a mac.
ratnikh @ Sep 6th 2007 11:33PM
So are you buying a piece of art to stroke your ego and impress your peers, or are you buying a laptop that runs high end gaming content (to stroke your ego and impress your peers)?
If you want style, go buy a painting, or a sculpture. If you want top hardware and high-end specs, buy a laptop. If the laptop looks good, to you, then so much the better. If not, who cares? Are you hoping to win a beauty pageant, or frag your opponents and run multiple applications with ease?
I don't want a bunch of flimsy plastic bullshit slapped on my freakin' expensive high-end laptop in an attempt to whore it up. I want it solidly built, and I want it to run fast. I don't want to feel like I have to swaddle and cradle it every time I pull it out. I don't want some stupid ultra-shine that's going to get scarred and marred after a month of real use. This is a piece of high-end machinery, and should stand up to heavy use by hardcore gamers. If it doesn't then it isn't worth the silicon the chips are made with.
Being by Dell, it may not be anyway, but aesthetics be damned. I want speed and dependability. Cut the design dept. and throw more money at R&D, Testing, and QA.
If more effort went into making things work instead of surface deep eye-candy, maybe shit would last longer and run better.

i choose c) all of the above
gilo @ Sep 7th 2007 2:07AM
Good point only the shiny stupid LEDs kinda rule this one out for you .
Its also x1.5 thicker then current 17" XPS/Inspiron for no good reason other then to house the 2HDs stacked cheaply and help cooling for "free" .
In fact everything in it looks subpar and cheap , but I'm sure DELL is planning to sell this for 1000's $ more then the inspiron 1720 which isn't so hot either .
And while I enjoyed reading your pov , I think what is more accurate would be "practical design" which suggests an item doesn't have to be eye pleasing if its doing its job .
A fine example would be the original Vespa which was an odd looking scooter but everything about it had a function and practical reason .
This is not the case here .

Sick of all this M1730 hype-a-crap. I wish they would release some details about their tablet pc instead.
ez17 @ Sep 7th 2007 1:26AM
ugh! i think i just through up in my mouth a little bit looking at those pics, thats not even the typical ugly dell, this is tacky and BEYOND ugly!
Dumbo @ Sep 7th 2007 2:16AM
As long as the specs are comparable, I'm sticking with the Precision m6300. It's nothing to look at, but at least it's not fugly! High end performance, no bells and whistles, lights, double stacked disks and/or carbon fiber imitations. Just a plain-old (heavy) laptop with a lot of horsepower and a nice GPU, not to mention 4GB of RAM...
kevin @ Sep 7th 2007 7:20AM
my suggestion don't buy this laptop i have the old version great laptop but it has cooling problems major problems the heat destroys you video card and cpu if you get this get a big WARRANTY don't make the same mistake i did i have spent about $1600 just fixing my laptop 4x video cards 2 motherboard and a bunch of little stuff like fans
guess where my computer is now

CubsRock @ Sep 21st 2007 10:30AM

Looks like its next Wednesday now.
Scrag @ Sep 21st 2007 10:56AM
This is ludicrous, the fact that they are about to release a major product upgrade, allegedly next Friday!! and there is NO official details bar a teaser on their website.
Scrag @ Sep 26th 2007 3:49AM
Well its the 26th.... and?
You've guest already, no sign of the M1730, not on the euro site anyway.
And the teaser/sign up page has disappeared.
Scrag @ Sep 26th 2007 6:15AM

Scrag @ Sep 26th 2007 7:34AM
