You might have seen a story floating around earlier this month about an Oregon nine-year-old who took the wheel of his dad's big rig and steered it to safety after the father suffered a seizure and blacked out. Well, the kid, Matt Lovo, said all he wanted in return for his heroics was a new
Playstation 3, and after the dad rebuffed a community effort to pitch in and buy one,
Sony stepped in a donated a unit. Big ups to Sony for the generosity and to Matt for his bravery -- we hear he's planning on installing the console in the truck, so maybe the vibrations from the engine will make up for that lack of rumble.

What a selfish kid, wanting a physical possesion because he saved his dads life. But then again his only a young kids so we can't really expect him to understand the value of it all ect.
Jon @ Sep 6th 2007 7:22PM
What do you want?
A PS3.
You are selfish.
I rather reward a good kid than a bad kid.
Dan @ Sep 6th 2007 7:23PM
what a selfish kid saving his dads life like that...
TOM YOU ARE A DOUCHEBAG
David Landrum @ Sep 6th 2007 7:29PM
When I was a child, I wanted material things when I did something good. Am I a bad person?
Alan Partridge @ Sep 6th 2007 7:36PM
I'm an adult and i'd still ask for a ps3! :)
cereal @ Sep 6th 2007 7:39PM
"Matty said his real reward is that his father recovered after the seizure."
Selfish, aye?
LiQuiD_FuSioN @ Sep 6th 2007 7:54PM
I think the main point was that the kid was "ASKED" by other people if he wanted something in return. I don't think he actually took out a wish list and demanded a PS3 when the press were around. Nevertheless, the kid did a heroic deed, kudos to him.
But, let's say the kid DID demand a PS3 though. What happened to "it's better to give than to receive"? You're not supposed to expect anything from saving someone's life unless you're egotistical, imo.
Hypothetically speaking, the kid would have KNOWN he'd get a lot of publicity, so heck, why not let the press know what he wants? It seems he'd be using his dad's ordeal for his own personal gain and I think that would be pretty lame if you ask me.
Just my two cents. Yes, I'm bored, but I give props to Sony for this! ;)
angelsvairwaves1 @ Sep 6th 2007 8:07PM
@ liquid fusion
the kids like 8. come on.
bi0hazard @ Sep 6th 2007 8:57PM
actually he's 9 but thats not important
Ryan Karolak @ Sep 6th 2007 9:11PM
I would agree, asking for a reward can be considered selfish.. he's a kid though. At that age I may have done the same thing (except I would have wanted those fancy Pentium 1 computers for some real DF2 Jedi Knight and Doom action. :)
Bruce @ Sep 6th 2007 10:31PM
I was in Iraq at the start of the ground war imbedded as a Hospital Corpsman (combat medic) with the Marines, and I carried a guy over my shoulder that went down due to hostile enemy fire while risking my own life. During all this, I was doing it to save my buddies life, and to put MY life on the line in serving my country and getting shot at so the tax payers back home could save a nickle on a gallon of gas.
Here's my question... Where's my PS3?
Harlo @ Sep 7th 2007 8:44AM
@Bruce - Please direct the question to the people who owe you..
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500
brandon @ Sep 6th 2007 7:20PM
very kind of sony.
Phour ZwanZig @ Sep 7th 2007 12:12AM
Yeah but it prob was old stock that they found in the warehouse..
It was a 20gig.. lol..
Either way.. Sony sees PR.. so why not.. its only 1 PS3
Calviin @ Sep 7th 2007 10:16AM
Sony made a kind gesture and actually did something that could grant it good PR, and Engadget still has to burn them for not having rumble? Wow, that is harsh. I may not like Sony, but I'm not that harsh.
Simon @ Sep 6th 2007 7:24PM
Very kind gesture by Sony, and that kid really did something amazing, but its a shame hes so selfish.
Arjy @ Sep 6th 2007 7:26PM
I called 911 when my grandmother passed out from kidney failure last month, wheres my PS3?
Not that I want one.
Jeremy W @ Sep 6th 2007 7:28PM
Wow, Sony actually did something right for a change. Color me shocked!
Hill @ Sep 6th 2007 7:28PM
"Wake up, dad, don't die before you get me a PS3!!!"
balls @ Sep 6th 2007 7:29PM
The only reason Sony gave up the ps3 was to boost their sales numbers.
Dan @ Sep 6th 2007 7:32PM
yeah what a shitty company wanting to boost their sales like that...
YOURE A DOUCHEBAG
David Landrum @ Sep 6th 2007 7:32PM
Maybe Microsoft should do the same.
balls @ Sep 6th 2007 7:49PM
@David: They could do that. But this whole boosting their sales numbers by RROD seems to be working much better.
Hill @ Sep 7th 2007 11:52AM
"Maybe Microsoft should do the same."
haha... that would be funny, the kid asked for a PS3, end up with an Xbox.
Feb30th @ Sep 6th 2007 7:29PM
I can't believe you people saying this kid is selfish... he saved his dad's life! What do you expect a 9 year old want? PS3s donated to charties? I'm sure you guys are all very very generous when you are 9 year old.
Feb30th @ Sep 6th 2007 7:30PM
Donations do not count as sales.
hackman @ Sep 6th 2007 10:16PM
I think what they mean is that the kid would have to buy games for it
Jared @ Sep 6th 2007 7:31PM
Wow!! Way to reward selfishness...
Dan @ Sep 6th 2007 7:33PM
youre dumb as hell
Tucker @ Sep 6th 2007 7:31PM
"I saved my dad's life and all I got was this crappy PS3."
Feb30th @ Sep 6th 2007 7:33PM
He ASKED for it.
Austin @ Sep 6th 2007 7:42PM
Better than that T-shirt I got....
Eric @ Sep 6th 2007 7:34PM
Sony, I want a PS3. I saved an entire last week.
Don't believe me? It's true! Read about it in the Sim City Herald. There were freakin monsters!
John @ Sep 6th 2007 8:26PM
They didn't care about the countless times I saved an entire planet and the space-time continuum from Lavos. Why would they care about your little city?
^_^V Chrono Trigger 4 teh w1n.
Jared @ Sep 6th 2007 7:42PM
I think it was more of an act of self preservation, think about it... kid doesn't take controll of truck, he dies...
nanogeek @ Sep 6th 2007 7:44PM
that kid is sooooo selfish. youre supposed to save someone for no cost. he's probably drugged his dad
newgalactic @ Sep 6th 2007 7:44PM
I have to agree with Feb30t and Dan. How can you guys call this kid selfish? He saved his Dad's life. He's 9!!! You all need to lighten up on this kid. If any one of my kids ever saves my life, you bet your a$$ he/she is getting a trip to the toy store for a PS3(or the like). It's not like he was trying to deal with his Dad prior to saving his life. "Help Son!" "What's it worth to ya Dad? A PS3?" No, he saved his Dad's life first, then gave an honest answer to what he wanted as a reward.
DS @ Sep 6th 2007 7:48PM
Great, knowing SONY, now the price of all their products are going to be increased .00003% to make up for the loss of giving away that PS3 for free, after all, that is SONY'S way!
Mr Angry @ Sep 6th 2007 7:49PM
If he let's his father die the next time, he gets an Xbox 360
pupkick @ Sep 6th 2007 7:52PM
a PS3, gee thanks dad
Woylez @ Sep 6th 2007 7:56PM
Nice of sony. Now they can sell it and get decent haircuts.
Oliver Sayers @ Sep 6th 2007 7:57PM
Okay very nice of you Sony. But how about you release some games for the kid to play? Currently I use my PS3 for Motorstorm and up-scaling DVDs that's it!
Fred @ Sep 6th 2007 7:59PM
That's one lucky kid, even if the father is luckier.
sergiulucian @ Sep 6th 2007 8:02PM

Jon Graft @ Sep 6th 2007 8:08PM
If by saying he is "installing the PS3 in his truck due to lack of rumble" is supposed to be an insult, it is terribly weak. Put a 360 in there, and one bounce and it would scratch the crap out of the CD and then get the 3RoD, send it to Micro$haft and have them not replace it. That kid would have to save his dad's life every 6 months to keep getting free XBOX360s.
JD @ Sep 6th 2007 8:32PM
At least the 360 would survive a crash if there was one............ can sony say that about the PS3? :)
HineyWipe @ Sep 6th 2007 11:34PM
I doubt a 360 would survive anything other than a RRoD.
Good for Sony. Beat M$ to the punch. And why not...
Vizion @ Sep 6th 2007 8:14PM
WTG engadget in getting something negative towards sony there at the end.
Joe @ Sep 6th 2007 8:14PM
"-- we hear he's planning on installing the console in the truck, so maybe the vibrations from the engine will make up for that lack of rumble."
Let professional comedians take care of the jokes, Patel.
Duder @ Sep 6th 2007 8:16PM
So wait, this whole thing started with a seizure, and the end reward is a box from Japan that is known for causing seizures. Can we put a tracking device on this guy's rig? I'd like to steer clear of 'em.
