I think the main point was that the kid was "ASKED" by other people if he wanted something in return. I don't think he actually took out a wish list and demanded a PS3 when the press were around. Nevertheless, the kid did a heroic deed, kudos to him.
But, let's say the kid DID demand a PS3 though. What happened to "it's better to give than to receive"? You're not supposed to expect anything from saving someone's life unless you're egotistical, imo.
Hypothetically speaking, the kid would have KNOWN he'd get a lot of publicity, so heck, why not let the press know what he wants? It seems he'd be using his dad's ordeal for his own personal gain and I think that would be pretty lame if you ask me.
Just my two cents. Yes, I'm bored, but I give props to Sony for this! ;)
