Not sure if he'd be playing Rick Hunter, Roy Fokker, or even (gasp!) Breetai, but according to the
Hollywood Reporter, Tobey Maguire is going to produce, and possibly star in, a live-action movie based on the
Robotech TV series which pretty became the entire focus of my life when I was in 5th grade. (You seriously don't want to know how much of my spare time I devoted to tracking down even the most mundane details about the SDF-1, Veritech fighters, the Invid, and protoculture -- or to futilely trying to find a long-rumored VBF-1A Beta fighter to go with the die-cast plastic VAF-6 Alpha fighter I'd bought). Anyone who got into the show in the mid-Eighties will tell you that
Robotech had a level of depth and realism well beyond that of any other animated series on US television at the time, which isn't at all surprising considering its Japanese origins (
Robotech is credited with helping introduce anime to American audiences). Anyway, hopefully Tobey won't dumb things down like Michael Bay did with the Transformers movie. It was tough enough discovering a few years later that the entire show was actually three entirely different Japanese anime series awkwardly grafted together so that they'd have enough episodes for syndication in the US market -- turning
Robotech into yet another mindless action fest might just be too much to take.
i loved it when it was called macross and wasn't dumbed down for american audiences :(
alright... now that's good news...
What's next Star Blazers the movie? Going back to my childhood I don't think they could make that one work. Who knows?
When are the auditions for Robotech? I'm there.
i thank transformers was done really good, also you can not do everything from cartoon to live movie. not all the things in cartoon is going to fit in a live movie. you have to be open mind to the cartoon to live movie thing thats going on know. i do have to say this their is going to be one cartoon to live movie thats going to be just like the cartoon it came from. the way robotect is it could be the one.
I am amazed that in all these years, people have not realized that TOP GUN was a total rip of MACROSS.
Someone shoot me, this is going to be so anus. I know your American's love your RT, but maybe you should watch the original Macross. Mospedea and Southern cross aren't even part of the same universe, yet they're part of the robotech series. WTF is an invid, or veritech... so lame. Valkyrie is more like it. Rick hunter, wtf.... try Hikaru.
I can't wait to see this go down in flames.
Shut the fuck up and go play your Wii or DS in your crate of a house.
Finaly a roll that Ashton Kutcher can sink his teeth into.
Yeah, Michael Bay reeeeally dumbed down that Transformers movie. Peter, are you serious? It's a movie about robots from outer space, adapted from a cartoon. Just how sophisticated did you expect it to be?
I would love to see Robotech as a live action movie! I actually thought Transformers turned out pretty descent. It could have been better, but it could have been alot worse. As for making movies of other great childhood cartoons such as Voltron, G.I. Joe, and Starblazers, what about the first anime style cartoon I can remember consuming my life, Battle Of The Planets.
I hope they incorporate the daedalus attack for some reflex missle carnage, nothing like the SDF-1 punching through the Zentradi ship only to deploy it's pwnage
I LOVED THIS SHOW WHEN I WAS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TOO!
even more than air.
This is freaking awesome... maybe now I wont have to explain my user name to the great unwashed. All I'll have to explian is that it's misspelled (started using it before I found out the spelling and it just stuck)
Disaggree with you about Transformers... Micheal bay was perfect for that ... I wanted to see giant fighting transforming robots... and that's what I got.
I was 10 when the series came out and it was the most 'adult' like cartoon I had ever seen. For once there was a cartoon that didn't dumb it down for the kiddies. Main characters die?! Love triangles??! The reality of a devistating life altering war? This movie (or hopefully a couple sets of trilogies), if done right, could rank up there with the greatest franchises of all time. Take it seriously Tobey...and keep it real.
Robotech/Macross is the best.
If they could stick with story(Macross), cut out the narrator, emphasize the character + situation + emotional relationship with the viewers, and having a decent acting(without trying to finish it all with just one movie).... it could be a hit. If he recognizes that his audience will want it to be more of like a "cult classic" than a mega blockbuster that is.
