Samsung develops 0.08mm thick PCB
We're not in a position to say whether Samsung's new 0.08mm PCB is truly a world record, but damned if that thing isn't unbelievably thin. (For comparison, your average piece of copy paper is supposed to be about 0.1mm thick.) Of course, things become a bit thicker when you actually start adding components to the mix, but won't you just let us revel in our dreams of cheap, flexible, powered e-newspapers for a few minutes?

Silly Koreans, they even use hot models to show off their PCBs.
Chris Macdonald @ Sep 9th 2007 8:20PM
hot? she looks pretty average to me..
Herbert Neal @ Sep 9th 2007 8:22PM
She's hott
silverblackvoid @ Sep 10th 2007 2:46AM
she's ok
Rob @ Sep 10th 2007 2:43PM
Don't you know,.. Half-Asians are out,... Lebanese women are what's hot now.
;o)
frank @ Sep 9th 2007 7:52PM
phat
BigEvilSquid @ Sep 9th 2007 8:04PM
1mm PCB is standard even for multi-layer PCBs, 0.8mm is nothiing special.
Chris Macdonald @ Sep 9th 2007 8:19PM
but 0.08 mm is
Chris Macdonald @ Sep 9th 2007 8:21PM
oh haha u corrected
morcheeba @ Sep 9th 2007 8:49PM
Actually, standard thickness is 1/16th of an inch (0.062", or about 1.6mm). You can get from 1 to about 14 layers in it. Variations are possible (I've seen some monster-thick Sun motherboards), but that's the default thickness -- as used in, for example, all PCI and DIMM memory boards.
Darwin @ Sep 10th 2007 12:16AM
Note that this refers to the finished BOARD, not the prepreg layers IN the board. (@Ellianth, that would be glass fiber layers already impregnated with uncured resin).
Having said that, it's not like people haven't been mounting components on uber-strong and flexible kapton for years now (see memory devices).
BigEvilSquid @ Sep 9th 2007 8:05PM
I just re-read that 0.08! now that is something!
Joe Marriott @ Sep 9th 2007 8:12PM
Well, I for one welcome our ultra thin PCB overlords.
Josh @ Sep 9th 2007 8:32PM
But can it play doom?
JD @ Sep 9th 2007 8:44PM
And can we stop saying these things? or is it just me?
Joe Smith @ Sep 10th 2007 1:38AM
but does it come with a goat?
ethana2 @ Sep 10th 2007 1:52AM
It's tradition man! Tradition!
...and whether it can play doom or blend depends entirely on what you put on it. No, by itself, it cannot play doom.
Adam @ Sep 10th 2007 2:23AM
All your PCBs are belong to us
AND
I'm in your factoriez messing with your PCBz
Ellianth @ Sep 9th 2007 8:20PM
So uh.. what does PCB stand for? When using obscure acronyms could you please expand them in brackets or something? The best my brain can come up with is plastic circuit board. Is that what it stands for?
Chris Macdonald @ Sep 9th 2007 8:22PM
Printed Circuit board, noob
Chris Macdonald @ Sep 9th 2007 8:23PM
ever heard of Wikipedia?
DWells55 @ Sep 9th 2007 8:23PM
Pretty close, it's printed circuit board.
Ellianth @ Sep 9th 2007 8:26PM
Thanks for your assistance. Yes.. I'm a newbie at memorizing what every acronym in world stands for. Tell me what this one stands for ESAD.
Hint: It's not technology related :).
Noway Jose @ Sep 11th 2007 9:55AM
See! Size doesn't matter!
Chris Macdonald @ Sep 9th 2007 8:29PM
Well Wikipedia was of no assistance, but Urban dictionary explained it's meaning as "Eat shit and die"..........
arbopilot @ Sep 9th 2007 8:35PM
ESAD = estimated still air distance....
Ellianth @ Sep 9th 2007 8:40PM
Congrats, now you got my secret message. Now was it worth searching two sites for that?
David @ Sep 9th 2007 9:10PM
I stand corrected, at first I thought the more immature person was the one who called you a noob.
Nomi @ Sep 9th 2007 9:57PM
hahaha...noobz
RijilV @ Sep 10th 2007 12:56AM
So wait, you read a technology blog where greater than 50% of the stories are about things built on PCB and you get snooty when people criticize you for not knowing something some simple as that?
Do you drive a car? Ever heard of an engine?
Look, maybe to you its cool to sit around and look at all the pretty pictures, but most of us believe it is important to have a basic understanding of how thing we use work and a general idea of what parts go into them. You defending your vagrant ignorance is appalling.
Knowing how things work is paramount to making informed decisions regarding them. Living in a world where there are magic little devices that do cool things and have nifty lights might seem like the ideal situation for you - but that mode of life has dire consequences.
Live in Amerika? Know how the electoral system works?
Oh how could you be bothered with that. So many words and things that mean stuff. Pretty obtuse information, you might has to go look it up somewhere..
Or maybe you should just go back to the bar, order a stiff drink, feel the music run through you - hey I think that blond over there is smiling at you...
Chris Macdonald @ Sep 10th 2007 6:23AM
Well, that's exactly what I meant..... In fewer words..........
And yes, it was worth searching 2 sites for that, rather than commenting asking what the meaning of the acronym is...
Cykeo @ Sep 9th 2007 8:24PM
Printed Circuit Board.
And yes, even though 3M has been making PCB's on a film-like substrate for a while now (rollable circuit boards), this is still amazing, since you can actually mount components on this one.
ark_v2 @ Sep 9th 2007 8:25PM
0.08mm...oh my lord...
Imagine if every component was shrinked to a comparable size...
Jeff @ Sep 9th 2007 8:46PM
You'd have a Zoolander phone!
DarkAardvark @ Sep 9th 2007 9:01PM
or made into bendy things =D
i'd love to roll my computer up and take it with me
BigEvilSquid @ Sep 9th 2007 8:39PM
I just re-read that 0.08! now that is something!
Ian @ Sep 9th 2007 8:46PM
I still can't get over the fact that someone said she was hot. Non-asian guys have the worst taste in asian girls....
Kim @ Sep 9th 2007 9:16PM
Heh. I actually think she's cute. "hot", though, is something else to me.
DioXide @ Nov 10th 2007 10:03PM
She looks hot to me. Isnt that i have bad taste, it is that i dont like supermodels, i like the normal 26-and-older girls.
And btw, that PCB is nice, but i fear that these kind of new technologies will make the homebrewer life impossible... or at least very expensive..
Homebrewer? maybe i meant modder, i'm not very good at english
Richard Lai @ Sep 10th 2007 12:48AM
As an Asian, I'd give her 6/10, but that's with the makeup in the photo.
Jesse S @ Sep 9th 2007 9:10PM
And they didn't even have to sacrifice a goat or two!
ryan @ Sep 10th 2007 12:29AM
And so begins the saga of new Engadget comment cliches.
Jesse S @ Sep 10th 2007 12:31AM
Thanks, I remembered a comment like that on the goat post, so I _had_ to partake in what will hopefully become a new meme!
JUK @ Sep 10th 2007 8:42PM
Some of us have other things to worry about. The acronym of plastic circuitry board is pretty low down my priorities list, but hey - maybe that's just me.
Ryan @ Sep 10th 2007 2:29AM
i think they r goin to release 1mm ultra slim mobile phone.
Karl Viklund @ Sep 10th 2007 4:29AM
Do these Asian companies always have to use some stu*** model that looks like they doesn't have a clue technology to show off their products. Always always these female models... Always. It's so damn 80's. Do they think they will sell more products or get more attention? These companies only look really stupid in my mind. Please please... Take product pictures without these models... Asia...
爆走貓 @ Sep 11th 2007 3:37AM
I bet only Asian company use female models in car show.
oh, I almost forget the F1...
I guess the eye candy is only for the real man...
akashmohan @ Sep 12th 2007 6:15AM
yea,,,, i dont kno wats special this was announced over 2 years ago... orsomething when the D600 came out... they had a working model available... yet this got no large media exposure(dont kno y) but neway... its gud tat ter gettin reconised now... Samsungs main aim for this product is 2 have pepople watchin tv where ever when ever and it being flexiable is the reason that u can put it in ur pocked and not worry about breaking it by flexing.... (unlike ta first gen nano's hehe)....
btw any1 got tips on how 2 keep focused on exams for a 16 year old??? [and dont say i should first stop using the internet... cuz tats lk having a fish out of water... and not the one tat can breathe on ground either...]
Anders @ Sep 15th 2007 3:42PM
Flexible or not I think you should be careful about bending it once it is populated. At least if you use standard soldering.
But hey, what if we glued in some naked silicon chips bonded them in and covered the whole thing with Glob Top. You can actually grind silicon so thin that it becomes flexible too...
If nothing else it would be a really thin board!
