Apple iPhone hits the one million mark
It took a bit longer than a some analysts were expecting, but Apple announced today that it has finally broke the one million iPhone sales barrier, 74 days after the iPhone hit the scene on June 29th and right on target for Apple's own projections. "One million iPhones in 74 days -- it took almost two years to achieve this milestone with iPod," said Steve Jobs. But of course, it's never enough: "We can't wait to get this revolutionary product into the hands of even more customers this holiday season." Only time will tell if those aggressive price cuts and international sales can help the iPhone hit the 10 million mark in 2008.

Zune phone!
Zune phone. Heh. Yeah, I want a brown cell phone. Preferably something with that innovative Microsoft touch. Like maybe a dial.
Welcome to the social :P
Is that legal or illegal International sales. I wonder how many of these original 1M iPhones are owned outside of the US and have been unlocked to be used on international GSM networks ?
Tired of waiting for Canada's iPhone !
How would using it internationally be illegal? You can buy a product in the US and take it to whatever country you damn well choose to. Nothing illegal about that at all.
Scott, thats not entirely true. Some USA made products are banned from exportation so that blanket statement is untrue.
Taking an iphone to another country is probably not illegal but it may be to use it there as I am sure it must go through approvals just like it does here.
That's definitely nice.
Engadget, are you guys planning on giving away the cracked iPhone?
I'd take it. Make sure you clear the memory before you hand it over to me.
Don't want to be blamed for any prank calls.
Congratulations Apple. You've shown the US carriers that high-end phones aren't all about enterprise.
I doubt you'll be able to repeat the success in more mature mobile nations though.
how long before the moto razr affect takes place? or the nokia 8800?
great achievement though .. 1 million in 74 days is no small feat.
it isn't a small feat indeed
and for those nay sayers "ohhhh jobs HAHA you arrogant bitch you need to cut $200 cuz you're not getting 1mil sold!", how does it feel to be publically humiliated by yourself?

:D
Wow. Why are/were people expecting so much? A $600 device in one country where it's entirely useless in one or 2 states due to ATT. That only runs on ATT or you pay $200 to your current carrier.
That's an average of 13,513.514 iPhones per day for a Rev A product for a straight 74 days!
Though I do see Apple's stock is UP $5.21 as of now.
Wow, aapl up on good news???
I've followed Apple stock since I purchased in 2000, (around $12 per share, considering the split), and pretty much without fail aapl always drops on ACTUAL good news and rockets on RUMORED good news.
Nice to see a change of pace.
After coming down $10 since the 'Beat Goes On' announcement

Thanks! :D
woowww, that is $100 million to credit back to the customer
25,000,000 in actual dollars.... That is if everyone actually proceeds to get their rebates. Plus, Apple sells even more products.... Say maybe 25,000 more ipods... Not a bad idea Steve. Not a bad idea at all
Paul, you are such a douche! Who gives a f##ck what "some" analyst said, none of them can agree on anything. The important point, which you conveniently fail to mention to support your stinking anti-Apple biais, is that the one million mark was reach 20 DAYS EARLIER than Jobs prediction!
In the meantime, you might want to remind the Microshit crowd, especially its investors, that thier "CEO" level of in-acumen keeps staggering the mind, and promises hell for the company's future:
There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance. - Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, April 30, 2007
1 Million is a nibble of marketshare. Microsoft Steve will continue to be right until Apple Steve makes an announcement of 10 Million iPhone's sold.
That'll happen pretty quick once the iPhone is released in Europe - it'll happen as fast as production capacity allows.
I thought the iPhone has only been out for 2 weeks? At least that's what all the cry babies were saying when the price drop was announced....
You mean 1 Million people got screwed out of $200..
Haven't been following the news lately, eh? $100 Apple credit to all early adopters? Ring any bells yet?
And Apple, DEFINITELY forced them to buy an iphone at $600. Give me a break.
Agreed but reducing cost after 60 days is way to early. Also what do you think is going to happen with $100. People will most probebly buy stuff more that $100 and Apple gains again.
But of course if Apple screws us we should just shut up and enjoy it cause soon they will solve the problem of global warming and find a cure for cancer.
I would own one if it works for T-Mobile.
Why did Apple have to be stupid and partner with those idiots at AT&T?
I hate AT&T and Cingular, both networks blow.
Then don't get one and quit yer whinin'. They went with AT&T because it is the largest in terms of subscribers. so it's the largest pool of potential iPhone buyers.
Bring on the 16GB 3G version! You call that crying? Wait and you see!
Here's somethin' funny. I hate Apple, iTunes, and iPods.. but I bought an iPhone. :P Love it, and for $299.. seemed like a really good deal. iTunes FTL though. :(
Personally I still think that $399 is too much for a phone that you can only get if your provider is AT&T. Ill stick with my free LG from Verizon.

Note that this is 1M iPhones shipped, not sold or activated. There are quite a few of these phones sitting on the shelves of AT&T stores, but because of the....unique way that Apple recognizes sales they get to pat themselves on the back for sending phones that go unsold. Same goes for the iPods, btw.
it says 'SOLD' 1M iPhones. not shipped.
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/09/10iphone.html
but i'm with you. its only a matter of time before ballmer releases the Zune Phone and we'll be able to laugh at all of the iPhone users. haha.
Yes, it "says" SOLD, but if you look at Apple financial documents and SEC filings you'll find that they define SOLD as shipped to retail distribution partners, because those partners sell it on their behalf (incl. AT&T). Now they get to recognize inventory as sold as soon as it leaves the warehouse. This does NOT mean there are 1M active iPhones in the hands of users. I'd bet it's a bit less.
And there already is a Zune phone. My HTC/WM5 phone, in addition to having removable/expandable storage and battery, streams any one of tens of thousands of internet radio streams, in full stereo 192kbps MP3 or 92kaccPlus or WMV or any other number of formats (over my $20/mo unlimited 1.5Mbps connection). I can surf the "REAL" internet, complete with Flash, and it's all touchscreen until I want to type, then I can use a real keyboard if I want, or stick with touchscreen. Last, I can sync with Windows Media Player (really sync, not just wipe / copy ala iTunes), and even write my own apps. I can run real GPS navigation and Live! Search and Google Maps and a million other programs because MS doesn't try to control the product after I buy it. I can even set ANY MP3, WAV, or WMA file to a ringtone or any other system sound for that matter.
They don't need to release a Zune Phone. They already make a great mobile platform. One that way more than a million people use.
What would interest me more is the number of activations. Sales numbers are usually from the manufacturer to the retailer, and I'm curious how many people have actually bought them.
I would totally own one but i have Verizon and dont want AT&T.
But even with the price cut i dunno if iphone will reach the 1%.
Also we don't forget that the marketing started years ago, they just opened the "dam" and the water started flowning quickly the first days but next months. The price cut can help to increase the sales or may not.
So, you cannot extrapolate (74 days = 1 millions -> 148 days = 2 millions).
Funny thing is, I've only seen two outside of the Apple Store...
