iPhone SIM unlock giveaway: round 1
So if you haven't already heard, today is iPhoneSIMfree launch day, and the crew that software unlocked the iPhone has hooked us up with five iPhone unlocks to give away to you, our faithful, iPhone obsessed readers. We'll be giving one away each day of the week this week, starting now! Here's how it works.Details about the unlock
- Bring your own iPhone. We're not supplying the device, just the unlock.
- You must send us your iPhone's IMEI; you can't resell the unlock. If we don't receive your IMEI in a timely manner, we may award the unlock to someone else.
- We will not be offering tech support on the unlock. Once you've got it, it's out of our hands, ok?
- We do not make any guarantees about the unlock. We're not guaranteeing that it will work when your phone gets the next Apple update later this month, that it will work with your SIM or your carrier, or even that it will work on your phone. We're not even going to guarantee you won't end up with a bricked phone. We're just handing it off to the winner, the end.
- Leave a comment below. That's it! Who loves you, baby.
- You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you'll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.) In other words, be careful when commenting and if you submit more than once, only activate one comment, ok?
- If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory.
- Contest is open to anyone worldwide! Duh.
- Winner will be chosen randomly.
- Entries can be submitted for the next 24 hours. After that we'll move on to the next iPhone unlock. Good luck!

i was going to say this will be interesting to see how many readers have iPhones from the posts etc.... but after seeing the first few here i realize that engadget has too many readers who dont know how to actually read... shame.

The best one so far...
John B @ Sep 10th 2007 4:53PM
Um .... you do realize that whoever gets this would be most likely to PURCHASE an iPhone afterwards if they don't already have one? You don't need an iPhone to win the contest. You need an iPhone in order to *implement* what you win in the contest.
Of course, if people can't read that's not Engadget's fault. ;) Hell, I'll definitely use this as an excuse to buy an iPhone if I win. (Like that will happen.) I refuse to go to AT&T, but if I can get an iPhone and stay with my current provider? Pfft! Why the hell wouldn't I at least try?
Alexander Pink @ Sep 10th 2007 5:01PM

I'm really wondering if other cellphone makers are even trying to play catch-up. It seems to me that even though the iPhone name has a lot of awareness, few people realize the full ability of the device. Time after time, people are astonished that it is also an iPod when I show them. Then their continued astonishment to find a full safari web browser albeit without flash, a video player, email, a camera, google maps, calendar, weather, and youtube.
Most seem to know about the maps thought probably due to the commercials, but the rest is a mystery. Thus, as my opening question asks, is it even plausible that other companies are scampering to include more features into their phones? The RAZR2, Motorola's latest phone, for instance pales in comparison to the iPhone. So it is true that there are all cellphones and then the iPhone in its own catagory, but people at large seem to not take notice.
One reason seems to be AT&T lockdown, although this too comes as a surprise to some. I believe the biggest reason is there is no perceived need for a device to perform all of the functions the iPhone offers. This changes the moment you use an iPhone, but gadget freaks, early adopters, and mac fans aside there doesn't seem to be a great desire among the general populace to want to go demo an iPhone. The commercials can only provide so much information. A hands-on experience is what sells people now. All of the people that watched all of the Steve Jobs speeches, check Digg.com on an hourly basis, and the rest of the mac die-hard fans that were going to buy the phone the day it was released without having such a hands on enlightening experience already have done just that. They are proud iPhone owners. Thats all done with. Apple's focus needs to be on targeting the market that doesn't understand how revolutionary this device is. Until the majority of consumers adopt this understanding no other cellphone manufacturers will go out of their way to try to release a phone with actual comparable features. A mediocre offering from other companies doesn't matter as long as there is an offering of a new model. Consumers won't compare nor will they laugh at featureless renditions of old models. Consumers simply believe all devices are only as good as their release date. Likewise they tend to assume that devices whose release dates are relatively the same to be of equal value and feature-set. Things need to change.
