i'm actually looking forward to the the zune 2.0, maybe it will realize it's potential a little more than the ipod touch
This is the Zune 2.0 - cant you see it was upgraded to BOSE earbuds and now comes in Dolphin Blue and Salmon Pink colors.
By the way - the iPod touch may not do everything an iPong dues but it does have a Safari browser and iTunes WiFi downloads, thats pretty damn impressive for an MP3 player. 'Zunes wifi can only squirt songs that are limited to 3 plays before DRM kicks in.'

i think engadget has all the right to pick on the zune, i hated the first few gens of ipods cause of the bulk. For the last 3 or so years apple is getting it right with the nanos and the ever slimming classic ipod. Then the zune comes along and is bigger, taller, and heavier, not what i think most people want in a PMP.
A blue one? Great I've been holding off for just this!

Now would it make you feel even better if I told you that I never use my iPod or my Zune? I prefer my Sansa plugged into my mp3 port, coupled with my Sirius S50.
So Sansa in the car (gets used the most cuz I like Rhapsody)... The iPod stays docked at home (second most usage). Zune sits on the desk byt the computer and goes on trips with me (cuz I have this gut feeling its more durable than the iPod... bought it cuz i like gadgets and I was looking to change it up)
I just think the hatred for anything other than iPod on engadget is absolutely ridiculous.

I think in this case, some healthy criticism is necessary. Microsoft keeps trickling (squirting?) out different colored Zunes in a lame attempt to try to maintain some kind of attention for a product that isn't receiving much. Sure, iPods come in different colors too but they are usually introduced all at once and with other product updates.
Also, I want to point out that all the Micrososft fanboys kept saying at the Zune launch that Microsoft was going to add a ton of features to current Zunes and none of that has happened to my knowledge. The only wifi hack I've found requires you to rename files with a .jpg extension.
Come on buddy lets get some perspective here. They aren't making fun of the Zune because it's not an iPod, they'll making fun of it because it sucks.

If the Zune owners are critical with the way MS handled the Zune, why wouldn't Engadget? for instance having wifi way before Apple and doing nothing with it, only to "squirt" other Zune owners. That would make any loyal Zune owner unhappy. They promised updates but no 'major' updates came. Basics like resume, gapless, podcast are all still missing. What the F#@% does that have to do with iPods?

It almost just looks like a bad re-touching job that makes the regular black Zune look blue. But then again, I've been wrong before. Many times.

And I doubt it. I think those are the horribly overpriced Tri Ports.
They're not just Monitors, if you're going to call them anything like that then they're in-ear monitors, because earbuds themselves are monitors.
But I should hope that companies don't start making deals with Bose, you'd be better off with another company's offerings for a quarter the price.
In the ad, it states they are sold sepeatley for 99 zune bucks.

I love my Zune. I hated my iPod so much I returned it in under a month. Does that make the Zune the best player out there? No. Does that make the iPod the worst? No. It just means that I have my own taste, and I don't buy something based on what others think.
People just need to stop being idiots. I could go to every iPod related post and say "The iPod is junk". It doesn't make me look smart, it makes me look like an idiot.
There are a couple of ironies here. First, the BIG news from Apple before the iPhone last year was the iPod in so many new colors!!! So, I guess that the iPod was the first with a lame attempt to keep their device in the news and relavent until they finished a new product.
Second, none of the news that Zune haters are condemning Microsoft for comes from Microsoft. Engadget posts a non-news story slamming Microsoft, and the fan boys rush in to hate Microsoft too. Why don't you wait until Microsoft comes out with a statment before you slam them
And finally, the Halo version of the Zune sold out quickly. Whether you bought one or not, it was a very successful markting tie in. Your predictions of failure would probably be why you are so wealthy from your investments.

Go to any audiophile site and see what the people in the know say. Some will say Bose is crap (OK most) but the truth is that Bose is medium quality equipment sold as high end equipment. A pair of $60 Grado, Sennheiser, or Crossroads will blow away the Bose.

I bought a Zune last year because I wanted an MP3 player that was a good deal. At that time you got the most for you money. Bigger screen same storage space, more features for $50 - $70 less the iPod.
So why not buy a Zune? All you apple fan boyz would pay $1500 more (I build computers that can run circles around any Mac Pro for 1/2 the price) for a computer just because it says Apple on it why not pay $50 - $70 more for an MP3 player that says Apple right?
Look if you Apple fans wanna waste money on a name brand be my guest. Ill stick to saving money and getting products that are just as good or better (Have'nt had 1 single issue with my Zune all year).

Some people don't give a rat's ass about $50-$70 bucks. Some people make enough money for that to be a non-issue. Especially if you consider the wealth of support for iPods vs. Zune. Things like speaker docks, home stereo integration, full car integration.
Same thing goes for building computers. If you do it for fun, great. But if your doing it because you need the money savings, here's a thought: make more money. Some people make enough (as in over $100/hour for their time) and are so time constrained that building a computer is not a worthwhile endeavor (as in money saving). I used to build computers for myself. Then I realized that after factoring my time, I wasn't saving anything. And good luck building a low-weight high performance laptop...
But hey, let's go with your argument.

How come Archos never gets any props when their PMPs have had the same specs your precious iPod touch has had for a long time now? Theyve had wifi, touchscreen, video codecs out the yin yang, and large capacities. If the Zune had larger capacities a lot of people, including myself would probably have one. My Samsung Upstage has better audio quality than my 60GB ipod did. Even over A2DP headphones. For some reason I couldnt get my bluetooth headphones to work with my ipod...

The zune sucked from the beginning, so if MS comes out with another color, but the exact same POS player, it NEEDS to get slammed. Why the hell MS thinks this is still an "ipod killer" is beyond me.
Umm when did MS say it was an iPod killer? They are simply adding their 2 cents to the game. Its just like asking yourself, "Why does Chevy keep coming out with cars? Toyotas are soooo much better!" Theyre all the same. It just depends on what YOU want out of YOUR PMP. I had an ipod but it drove me crazy that I would have to buy another set of headphones because Apple's suck. Then I hated the wire stretched out across my keyboard as I worked. So I consolidated my phone and mp3 player and got an Upstage and will not look back until MAYBE Apple adds A2DP/AVRCP Bluetooth to their players. The bottom line is if a Zune works for you then buy a Zune and vice versa all the way down the entire suite of PMPs out there today. It just bothers me that this blog is so one-sided when there are plenty of worthy competitors to the iPod.

Everyone I hear says Microsoft is better because the own the market share of computers, so Apple computers suck! So then the Zune sucks, And all the others, right? Or maybe Apple computers aren't that bad, maybe the Zune has some things that people like better. But I will most likely stay with an iPod for two reasons (most people will agree) easy to use, and tones of Accs. The others maybe good, they may offer more features, or even more eyecandy but my iPod has never stopped working and I never had a software bug. I sold my Zune after 6 months!

Geoff, I'm sorry. The Zune sucks. It's a fact. If it works for you, fine. But it's a one-pound brick that won't even play PlaysforSure music and handcuffs the music you buy from the Zune store with DRM restrictions.
MS wants to compete with Apple and other companies in this market space, great. You have to innovate and release products a lot more quickly than MS is doing. You have to keep improving them with each release. A new color doesn't cut it.
Bill Gates should know this. He used to sneer at the original iMac as so much colored plastic. Look what his company is doing now...

Engadget I agree with you, who cares what colours it comes in, the product is what needs updating. I can't believe that Apple beat Microsoft to having a Wifi music store given that MS has had a wireless player on the market for almost a year more than Apple.
I'm not a Microsoft or Apple hater, far from it but the Zune is a horrible "me three" product.
I own a Zune but I have to agree with this post - I mean its been a year and still the only thing you can do with the WiFi on the Zune is transfer music for 3 days. This is disappointing.
Don't get me wrong - the Zune has served me quite well for a year now and I'm still very happy with it - just wish MS would have put a little more effort into maximizing the capabilities of what the Zune could do.

Anyone who thinks the current Zunes match up to the (less than perfect) ipods must need medication. The Zune has been nothing but a disaster of design, or rather a cheap re-badging of old Toshiba technology.
If I bought a Zune, it would be the brown one. Explain the part about how a color selection would make someone an 'idiot' again....? Oh, and examples of the disaster of design please, I'm curious. I wonder, because my wife has a Zune that goes through hell and hasn't had a single issue of any kind, and after a year and a half looks and functions like new.

How is the article insulting? All they said was that a blue Zune was not an upgrade or update. And that's true all it is is a different color it doesn't "add" or "improve" anything. And the "real update" they are referring to has been delayed so that's not insulting it's the truth.

Knocking the Zune is totally legitimate. Not because I hate Microsoft, It's just that they could of done a lot better than this product with all the money they have and force Apple to think that they could match them with innovation. I just get the impression they were lazy.

MS set out gave their first MP3 player sound and video. They also threw in a few extras like a radio and a primitive wireless share. Now everybody's doing the wireless when MS got slammed for supposedly a useless feature. Not bad for a first gen. And like a first gen car, the kinks are worked out in each successive year. Ford cars had a big push when it went automated for years with great success. Would you still buy a Ford? Apple made the push for the digital audio player and is still ahead... but for how long?
I will have to agree on this, look at vista. Now i am not an apple fanboy, i hate apple's yuppie products. I own a zune (i love it but i only use it for a big mp3 player) so i do not need all the extra stuff like wireless. I just wanted a lower priced mp3 player nothing fancy. Microsoft did go lazy on this one....

Who cares about MS Zunes or even Apple Ipods? They both offer inferior quality to fine companies that Americans don't know about. Take a look at Korean Mp3 players! They are so much better, yet no one knows about them. The new Samsung Mp3 player YP-P2 is just like the Ipod Touch except it has better resolution and bluetooth!
I have been using my Iriver U10 for 3 years now, and I never had any problems!

I have a few Apple products. I can't see why Microsoft thought the Zune would be a remotely intriguing product. However, pointing out the "Yawn" factor of a new color Zune when there have been an abundant amount of unexciting features added (or dropped) to many of Apple's products that get special headlines here at Engadget seems a little.. gee, I don't know.. biased. Not that I'm pointing to any kind of revelation here, but at least just let the loser lose and move on.
In case you guys were to busy beating the MS vs. Apple horse to death, this isn't a blue Zune. It's the black one which has a double shot casing of blue, and for whatever reason, be it the lighting for the picture or maybe even Target's marketing department decided it looked better blue, everyone decided to jump the gun.
iPod, Zune, I don't care. If it had a built-in FM transmitter so I could play my music through my car's system, I'd buy it!

You antiZune freaks live in some sort of iUniverse, where Apple is good and Microsoft is evil. You are nothing more than iPod evangelists spewing bull$hit. You should really relax a bit.
That is not a blue zune, it is a black Zune. If you have ever held a black Zune in your hands, you would see that it has a blue tint on the edges, and this is done on purpose, just as the Brown Zune has a green tint on the edges, and the watermelon Zune also has the green tint. The white zune doesn't have any tint on the edges though. The orange zune was sighted when the Zune's originally released, and some lucky people got them packaged in what they thought was a brown or black zune box, and they sold for a good bit on eBay, and such.
Also, if you look at the pictures of what is suspected to be the Zune 2.0 images, you can see that the d-pad on the new Zune's have more of a box with rounded edges shape, than a circle. I believe this is because it is easy to accidentally hit the select button while trying to scroll with the circular d-pad. That is definately not a blue zune, and it looks like an old orange one with it. Maybe M$ is officially releasing the orange zune soon.
Why is a new colour such a big deal? Whether it's a Playstation or Gameboy or a mobile phone or Fruit loops... It's not a very exciting innovation.

With Apple its always the same: a newer deeper color or an aluminum casing; no improvement in sound quality, and a larger hard drive, sometimes we even get a supposed update that is no better than the device it attempts to replace (iPOD nano is now the iPod Fat).

i got a Zune ipod and iphone and actually they all suck in their own ways. i got my zune for $150 off of woot because i wanted to move files between multiple computers and i had too much for a flash drive. yeah i know i could have got an external hardrive but i cant look at viewable files on that without connecting to the computer. all products have high and low points
Right, I mean who really cares about ANOTHER new color... they should bring out all these colors with the originals at the same time... I mean, would YOU really fork over more cash to get the same exact product just for the different color.
