8GB iriver clix 2 now available in US

Yeah, we know our overseas brethren have been toying with their 8GB clix 2 DAPs for awhile now, but as these things usually go, we Americans are celebrating late. Nevertheless, the US iriver store is now offering up the 8GB clix 2 for purchase, and it still touts that lovable 2.2-inch AMOLED display, an FM tuner, integrated voice recorder, up to 24-hours of battery life, and USB 2.0 connectivity. All yours for $239.99.

the price makes me sad. it may or may not be a better player (i would lean for may) but the price...ipod competitors need to have a cheaper price to fight all the marketing from apple, otherwise, it's just not going happen.

I have the 4gb clix and I wouldn't trade it for 2 iPod nanos with 8gb! The interface interaction using the "clix" sensors is wonderful, you can copy MP3s on it without any "jukebox" software and, most importantly, you get to use a gadget that nobody else has which looks just as good as the iPod.

But then again, I avoid apple products in general ...

I just ordered one. the 8GIG iriver for $240

ipod is $200 for 8gig 2.0 inch screen
sandisk is $150 for the 8gig 2.4inch screen

why did i just pay an extra $90?
because i got a better player that is worth the extra $90 from a company that i trust and believe in.

This is my fourth iRiver mp3 player in the last 8 years. I will NEVER buy another brand of portable player also long as they are still selling them. they are by far the best brand of players on the market.. no forget that.. they are in a market on their own. They are one of the few sellers that don't cripple their players and also you to use them as a hard drive to copy to and from the player like you can any other removable media.

ipod and sandisk don't release new firmware very often and never had new features after a product launch
ipod and sandisk are not AMOLED screen
ipod and sandisk don't have digital FM tuner (that you can record from)
ipod and sandisk don't let you delete files from the player away from the computer
ipod and sandisk don't have variable speed playback
ipod and sandisk don't have variable speed ffwd and rewind
ipod and sandisk don't have microphones (maybe new ipod?)
ipod and sandisk don't have let you control the quality of your recordings or auto pause when there is no sound
ipod and sandisk don't let you control the duration of the alarm clock sound
ipod and sandisk don't have a built in book reader with features like font control and auto scroll and auto scroll speed.


i could do on and on but i'll stop there.

Its the same reason why i don't shop at the dollar store for my garden tools. if i wanted crap it would buy crap and expect to pay less for it. the ipod and sandisk are NOT UMS players.. anything that isn't UMS is crap.
It's worth the extra money for the extra quality

check out cowon... in their history, they used to have slightly better sound quality than iriver... both are the top 2 players in korea.. cowon seems a bit more friendly with flac if that's your cup of tea..

i'm still using my oldschool iriver ifp-799.. it's smaller than the cord windup thing for my sennheiser hd202 headphones but i love the sound despite the appearance.. my gf's cowon iaudio5, the sound quality is a notch better..

if you can check out the mp3 players most people have in korea, not many have ipods or want them :) the knock off (china) brands and various korean brands (iriver, cowon, mpio, lg, samsung... and more that dont get exported i think) have it all.. either for less or a larger heap of features.. and if you think 24hrs of battery life is good (as the article says), there are players here with over 100hrs ;)

some of the mp3 players (not ipod) also support usb otg.. and i've played with the cowon iaudio x5 which also has a dual pane file browser for copying files.. so much out there fanboys dont know about.. of course not all care.. but there are some who do

one other note, i'm not aware of sandisks supporting asian languages (or anything else).. at least the ones sold in america.. other brands (ipod included) support them all out of the box..

Cowon D2 FTW!!! The only thing it's lacking is 8GB (only goes up to 4GB). I love mine. And now it has flash lite support and actually plays most games made for the Clix...

Um, maybe your Sandisk from 1998 doesn't do those things but my Sansa certainly has a built in mic, digital FM tuner and FM recorder...

The rest of the stuff... you're right it doesn't have, but most of that is fairly trivial gripes.

you can't remove part of a statement to change from true to false.
scandisk DOES NOT have a good book reader with all the functions that iriver has (or anything close to irivers feature list).. yes is does have a book reader, but that doesn't change my true statement to false..

Actually, I use the FM radio on my mp3 player almost as much as my mp3s. It helps when you're on the train to work/school and want to hear the news or the current hits. Also, sometimes I'm sick of my music (all 20 gigs of it) and want something different. So the radio is quite useful. Also, if you can record from the radio (my iRiver H320 does) then even better cause when you like a song thats playing, you can just save it to mp3.

However, I agree with you on the voice recorder. I've never used it. I see people recording lectures with them sometimes though.

My 3yr old Zen Micro is basically dying on me now.. and I'm in the market for a new mp3 player. I've thought of buying an iRiver Clix before, but I'm waiting for the Creative Zen 16gb which is coming out in October and that Samsung YP-P2 which I don't know when it will be released. But if I really can't wait I may as well get the Clix2 :|

Last time I checked Sandisk players are UMS. So are ipods, just the ipods cant read files put on it through drag and drop.

A quick search shows me that the price is 279 EUR here in Germany ... that's 385 USD (Disclaimer: Only one shop seems to sell it).
I'm used to the obligatory 1:1 USD:EUR conversion rate that most manufacturers seem to employ but this is ridiculous.
