Hitachi unveils 103-inch 1080p plasma display of its own
While Panasonic's 103-inch plasma has had the spotlight for quite some time, Hitachi is hoping to steal some of that oh-so-lucrative high-end market share with one of its own. Matching the Panny inch-for-inch is the CMP1030FWJ, which sports a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, VGA / component / S-Video / composite inputs, a 5,000:1 contrast ratio, and audio out as well. Additionally, this behemoth weighs in at a whopping 485 pounds, and while we'd love to know the (presumably sky-high) price, those details have yet to be divulged. Notably, users not equipped with a den large enough to hold a 103-inch PDP can opt for Hitachi's also-new (and also unpriced) CMP650FWJ, which touts 65 expansive inches of Full HD goodness and features a 10,000:1 contrast ratio.

I'm trying to think of any reason one would buy one of these hideous behemoths over a high-quality front projector with full HD resolution and drawing a complete blank.
For the fortune one saves one could buy an entire freaking HD-disc library to go with the projector, for that matter.

Brightness.
Don't get me wrong, I still prefer a projector as well, but you're not going to get the contrast or brightness you will from this. Not even close.

mmmm... 103 inches with only 5000:1 ratio. the best question is can they produce them for just anyone, like a consumer with a wad of money in hand, like Panasonic can. You can order the Pana 103" off their site... let's see Hitachi hit that.

not to mention the fact that this thing will probably cost thousands of dollars a year in energy bills.
Javi0084 @ Sep 12th 2007 11:32AM
People that can afford this probably aren't concerned with their electric bill.

On an italian site they sell the 103" Panasonic at 89.000€...quite something if you think the medium year-salary is about 20.000 :(
PS3guy @ Sep 12th 2007 10:54AM

HineyWipe @ Sep 12th 2007 11:34AM

Big deal, my Sony 71" is perfect. Although, in a few more years I may need to go this big, buwa hahahaha!!! And yes, I have a living room that can handle this size.
Rizzon @ Sep 13th 2007 5:30AM
Imagine four of these put together for, a game of Gears Of War.
You could have a split screen with 3 friends and still get 25 inches! :D
Chears,
Rizzon.

Nothing new or original really. Hitachi is buying this monster and the 65-inch from Panasonic. They being doing doing it with a few small size LCDs in Japan since 2005. They didn't even design a case/bezel and stand on their own, just a slap-A-badge where the Panasonic badge goes and presto here's our own 103-inch. Innovative ideas and technologies in Hitachi's PDP world died along with their FHP joint venture.
