iPod touch gets its first review
Here it is, ladies and gentlemen, the first review (or at least the first we've seen) of the iPod touch, Apple's new iPhone-aping, widescreen media player / WiFi device. If you can't wait until the end of September (the touch is shipping by the 28th, if you believe the Apple Store), you can sink your teeth into one lucky critic's view of the new device. According to PC Magazine, the iPod touch is a, "Thing of beauty," which shouldn't surprise anyone, considering the praise for its design-doppelganger, the iPhone. The review notes that all of the media player and internet controls are the same as the aforementioned device (Cover Flow, lists, zooming, etc.), though the touch allows you to "double-click" the button on the front of the device to bring up a music control-panel, no matter what application you're in. It's not all sweet-loving however -- PC Mag isn't too psyched on the Starbucks feature, which apparently can't be turned off, and says that the earbuds are absolutely awful (no real surprise there), though the complaints are minor compared with the praise lavished on the player. Don't take our word for it, though, hit the link and read the whole thing for yourself.

You obviously did not understand what I was trying to say. What I meant was that if there is going to be a certain amount of memory in the iPhone then the ipod Touch, as one of the higher-end models of the ipod, should have a higher capacity of memory in all of it's iterations in comparison to the iPhone, in an effort to send a clearer message as to the overall purpose of each device. In the iPhone's case, as a revolutionary smart phone, and in the ipod's case, as a revolutionary ipod and not a half ass iPhone as it currently appears. And I'm not gravitating to a specific amount of space, either 16 or 32, but in all of Apple's wisdom they did decide to put 8GB in their iPhone and because of that, many people, whether you feel this way or not, DID expect them to offer atleast two models of the Touch that incremented the amount of memory available in either of the two iPhone offering in some way, shape, or form. Furthermore those amounts, both 16 and 32 were given as figurative examples inline with previous and current ipod configuration schemes of both past and present, and if you indeed did possess a working knowledge of ipod/Apple related releases then you would have guessed this, instead of jumping to irrational conclusions about my statements as you did.
So please, next time, seek to understand instead of to defame, and realize that the only "NoOb" involved here is indeed you.
With only 16GB, wireless streaming from my home computer would be nice, but I guess they don't make products with that many features.
It's not even available yet, but that doesn't mean it's too early for one of your "How would you improve the "iPod Touch" articles.
I was really hoping for an iPhone with the phone bit turned off and a 160Gb hard disk added. And because there was no FCC or AT&T to keep happy, a full development SDK and toolchain along with an easy to use installer for 3rd party Apps. Shortly after that I was hoping to be able to install Skype4iTouch.
But I guess that's all just too revolutionary for this decade's version of Apple.
Doncha just hate engineering design by the marketing department?
i think ill go for the iphone instead coz carrying a phone and a pod together is a bit too gagetty...

switching between Engadget's and ArsTechnica's life blog of the event,
i might have to brake down and join the ipod crowd
MOAR MEMORY!
I mean, who in their right mine would be satisfied with a PMP that doesn't have divx/xvid support?
I'll keep holding my breathe for apple to use another codecs then their own.
wow they make it sound like the whole feature its fills of adds or something, its just a little icon that you dont have to tap if you dont feel like,@ who even said itunes sucks! Wake up itunes has to be the best there is outhere if your a windows user or a mac dont matter, am able to steam music from 3 pc and 2 mac in my apartment building at anytime, ats long as the people in my building have good music,"

"life blog"?
"Brake down"?
"MOAR memory"?
"Right Mine"?
"holding my breathe"?
"whatever the hell that last quote said"?
dear lord.
The only excusable one of those is MOAR MEMORY - MOAR is a 4chan meme. As in "Needs moar jigawatts" or "post moar pr0ns."
How can the starbucks feature even factor into the review when none of the starbucks are even equipped with the ability to integrate yet? Did PC mag get a fake Starbucks transmitter or something like the one they used to simulate a starbucks on stage at Moscone West?
While the starbucks feature is really cool feature to brag about and show off, practicality is pretty slim... I can't imagine there is a substantial number of people who are chillin in starbucks eager to wirelessly download a song, but who knows? it's never been done like this before... maybe making it this easy to buy the track you're listening to instead of asking an employee who it is, and then seeing if they have the CD and then buying the whole CD will generate some sales. The other thing is the target audience... I find the Starbucks playlist is targeted towards the 30-50 year old (excuse the generalization but less tech savvy) easier listening crowd, but the iPod touch is probably targeted towards a slightly younger and more tech involved crowd... Remember this feature is ONLY available on the touch, which means Joe user who is happy with just their iPod "classic" won't be doing this, and I highly doubt that any substantial number of the 30-50 year old demographic will spring for the "cool new iPod touch".
It would've been cooler and probably better for business overall if Apple released it's own In Store Media center that any retailer could buy to work with the iPod touch and the iPhone... then, ANY store you walk into that has one of their media players would allow you to shop for and download whatever you're listening to, regardless of which store it is.
Anyone know if THIS headphone jack is recessed as well? that'd be a real kick in the pants! And I said that it was only available on the touch, but I could be wrong... will starbucks be available on the iPhone?
And btw... if this feature will be available in starbucks, why wouldn't they incorporate it into Apple stores as well? Walk into an Apple store and be able to download whatever's playing on the in store system? why the hell not!
Testing the Starbucks feature didn't factor into the review, and didn't affect the rating. Because as you say, we couldn't test the Starbucks feature. But we had to mention it, because it exists.
And yes, you can turn off Wi-Fi. What you can't do is have Wi-Fi on and Starbucks off, according to Joswiak. That's what Tim was criticizing: he wanted a yes Wi-Fi, no Starbucks option.
Headphone jack is not recessed.
I'm getting me a cute little ipod nano to hold me over until apple decides to release 30+ GB ipod touches... 16GB WAS a big heartbreaker when announced sept. 5th... but those damn nanos, they are slick!
We will have 32GB touch for $399 when we have 16GB nano for $199...So yeah Next year when the market allows that.
I still think it should be called itouch, oh wait, parents don't want their kids doing that.
I'm going to stick to a used iPhone. I've been playing around with one that has been disconnected from at&t. Since it was once activated, all the other features work. So for about (or less than) the price of a new ipod touch, buy a used iPhone. Use it on WiFi and get email and all the other iPhone features. A much better choice at this point than buying an ipod touch.
Already have mine ordered :D
i think there was a typo in the article's title...
iPhone** gets its millionth* review.
It's doppelgänger, comes from the german word "Doppelgänger", also "Doppelgaenger would be correct. (the ä is e.g. on Macs: alt-u then a)
I don't know if anyone said this already but I went to the apple store today and got mine, they got them in this morning.
So when's the iCamera coming out?
I want
Tomorrow
I bought two on pre-order!
I don't understand why Apple cannot/refuses to include a decent set of head phones with these things. The Ipod's price is so heavily marked up you would think it would be the least they could do.
I JUST GOT MINE!!! I can't wait to get home and try it out!!!!!
I agree with jman and dave 8 gigs let alon 16 is waaaaaay enough for me at least I only put on the music im deffinately going to listen to which is currently only about 1.5 gigs so 8 would be fine with me
